Sober Living Homes in Iowa

Sober living homes in Iowa offer shared, alcohol- and drug-free housing for people who want a steady place to live while they build recovery, often during or after treatment. Iowa listings sit mostly in towns rather than big urban cores: 79% are in town settings and 21% in rural areas, with Des Moines and Sioux City appearing most often.

The sections below explain what recovery housing is, how Iowa’s certification works, what residents usually pay, and which questions to ask before signing a house agreement. Listing details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and information supplied by the providers themselves.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Iowa cities have sober living homes?

Des Moines leads the places where sober living listings in Iowa cluster, followed by Sioux City, Fulton, Albany and Fairfax. Larger cities within reach include Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Sioux City, so people searching from smaller towns may widen their search toward those metro areas when comparing house rules, cost and openings.

Rehab Centers in Des Moineshttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/iowa/des-moines/
Can I use Iowa Medicaid for sober living?

IA Health Link managed care, which integrates behavioral health, is the route for Iowa Medicaid, and nearly all of the sober living homes in Iowa record accepting it. Plans include Iowa Total Care, Molina Healthcare of Iowa and Wellpoint Iowa, so ask the admissions team which services a plan covers.

Rehab Centers in Iowa That Accept Iowa Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/iowa/iowa-medicaid/
Which sober living homes in Iowa are close to a river?

A median of about 5.4 miles separates sober living homes in Iowa from the nearest river, with distances measured from each facility. Most of the sober living homes in Iowa have a river within 25 miles.

The most-named rivers near these homes are the Raccoon River, Rock River and South River. Anyone weighing a house can ask the house manager how far it sits from river access.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home is shared, alcohol- and drug-free housing, and unlike rehab it provides no treatment on site. In Iowa, residents pay rent, share chores, follow house rules and arrange their own meetings, counseling or medication appointments outside the house.

Residential treatment in Iowa is a different kind of care. A residential program delivers clinical care where people live, and the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services licenses and monitors substance use disorder treatment programs. A correctional halfway house is different again, because placement there forms part of a sentence or release supervision.

Many Iowans pair a sober home with outpatient care or an intensive outpatient program, so treatment and housing run side by side. A recovery residence can also hold a state certification that Iowa created in 2022 using National Alliance for Recovery Residences standards, and a certified home should be able to show a current certificate.
