Comunidade Terapêutica Aldeia de Eiras is the first-phase house of the Ares do Pinhal therapeutic community, an association founded in 1986 by a group of psychiatrists in Mação, Santarém district. Adults over 18 of both sexes with licit or illicit substance dependence spend two to four months here adapting and stabilising before the second and third houses.
The first phase cuts ties with the previous environment; residents then move to the second-phase house at Chão de Lopes, also in Mação, for five to seven months, and to the third-phase house in Rinchoa, Sintra, for a further five to seven months, before reintegration apartments. Admission is proposed by the therapist of a public treatment team or an accredited institution and requires a written application letter covering personal history and reasons for entry, prior therapeutic follow-up, a medical assessment with specified laboratory tests and a chest X-ray, and acceptance of the house rules. Individuals on opioid substitution treatment can be admitted, while serious psychiatric illness such as deep psychosis is an exclusion. The team includes psychiatrists, a general practitioner, nurses, psychologists and social workers.

Comunidade Terapêutica Aldeia de Eiras Alcohol and Drug Services
Comunidade Terapêutica Aldeia de Eiras provides the opening residential phase of a long-term therapeutic community programme for adults dependent on alcohol, opioids or other licit and illicit psychoactive substances. The emphasis is on relearning to live without substances, personal restructuring and progressive autonomy, in an attitude of help and encouragement rather than correction and control of behaviour.
Clients may arrive while still on an opioid substitution programme, and the community is designed to complement rather than replace outpatient treatment through the public treatment teams. After the two Mação houses, the Rinchoa house prepares the return to work and society, followed by reintegration apartments in Rinchoa and Caxias and transition apartments in Lisbon. Ares do Pinhal also runs a low-threshold methadone programme with mobile units in Lisbon, an integrated support service for individuals using drugs in public spaces, health support at the city’s emergency shelter and a vocational school, so a resident can be linked to those services where relevant.
