About Casa de Alba
Casa de Alba is a residential democratic therapeutic community for adults with severe mental illness, run by the Fundação Romão de Sousa on a rural estate near Estremoz, Évora district. Up to 16 residents live in single and double rooms with 24-hour support, and an outpatient programme runs in Estremoz and Lisbon. Alcohol and drug rehabilitation is not offered.
The foundation, an IPSS instituted in July 2009, runs the house on a property of about seven hectares with two single and eight double rooms, each with a private bathroom, and residents share in the shopping, cooking and running of the home. Most arrive with psychosis, schizophrenia or personality disorder diagnoses. Treatment is pluralist and need-adapted, drawing on psychoanalytic, humanistic and systemic influences, with the house describing itself as a pioneer in Portugal of Mentalization Based Treatment and Open Dialogue. An outpatient programme and consultations run in Estremoz and at a clinic on Rua Andrade Corvo in Lisbon. The monthly fee is set according to declared income, and ADSE reimburses under its Regime Livre.

Casa de Alba Mental Health Services
Casa de Alba provides mental health care, not alcohol or drug rehabilitation: a residential democratic therapeutic community programme for adults with severe mental disorders, an outpatient programme in Estremoz and Lisbon, and outpatient consultations in psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy, social work, art therapy and nursing. Conditions seen include psychosis, schizophrenia, personality disorders, depression, anxiety, panic and emotional dysregulation.
Therapies combine pharmacotherapy with individual, group and multifamily psychotherapy, Mentalization Based Treatment and Open Dialogue, expressive therapies in art, dance, drama and music, psychomotor therapy, sport, gymnastics and yoga, and farm life with horse riding, agriculture, animal contact and walks. Each resident’s diagnosis is co-formulated with the community and family through multidisciplinary assessment, and an Individual Plan is reviewed regularly. Work placements at the Pousada de Estremoz and partner sites support the move back towards independence, and the multidisciplinary team spans psychiatry, clinical psychology, psychotherapists, social work, nursing, psychomotricity and music therapy, with support available around the clock.

How Much Does Treatment at Casa de Alba Cost?
Casa de Alba charges a monthly fee set according to the declared IRS income of the resident or their household, so the amount differs from one family to the next. A democratic therapeutic community asks a lot of the individuals who live in it, so first-hand accounts of sharing the cooking and the decisions, of the multifamily sessions and of what Open Dialogue felt like in practice would tell you or a loved one more than any rating. Families who weighed the income-based fee against the experience would also help the next reader.
A remarkable project. The professionals are fantastic. Educated and HUMANE. It's such a good project that we even think it might be "too good to be true." But it's really real. This initiative is commendable.
Enriching and productive experience. Technical team dedicated to people and committed to working towards empowerment with support. Attentive approach. Spectacular location and contact with nature and animals that allows… for a greater connection with oneself.
Excellent and tireless professionals working in harmony in a beautiful and peaceful location. The facilities are very good.
The approach is too permissive. So much so that it borders on negligence. It's not suitable for all patients. Which was the case with my daughter, who didn't even last a month in the hospital. Some issues raised… afterwards also seemed a bit amateurish to me. In conclusion, I don't recommend it.
