UF Health Shands – Gainesville Detox and Rehab Services
UF Health Shands – Gainesville carries a listing for detox, intensive outpatient and outpatient care. The withdrawal stage is clinically observed, which is what makes it safer than stopping alone. The structured element runs during the day and people go home afterwards. A proper assessment sets the level rather than leaving it to guesswork, and it is worth asking for one explicitly.
Only one side is on record here, so ask directly if both are needed. Approved medication is paired with counseling and regular review. The weekly time commitment varies considerably between providers, so establish it early rather than after admission.

UF Health Shands – Gainesville Reviews and Ratings
Patient reviews of UF Health Shands cover ground that official records leave out, from the admissions call to aftercare planning. Read them in this section alongside reviews gathered from around the web.
I’ll be updating this shortly with detailed information about how bad this facility and its practices are soon. Until then be very careful of agreeing to be treated here and definitely avoid it’s sister facility vista… which is a funneling system to create business. Most of all if you are a voluntary admit to FRC do NOT go there if you are in a field of work that has a monitory program ie any medical profession including veterinarians. They will report you to your board or monitoring program without your consent. I don’t have time at the moment to add details about other poor and shady practices but wanted to get this one point in quickly to help others avoid a huge mistake. More to come…..
Beyond grateful for my two visits here at FRC. I am now coming up just shy of two years sober. I did my two stints at the old facility. The staff is extremely welcoming, the programming is great, and both times met… great friends I am still in contact with today. Making the call to get a ride back to FRC after a month long binge, withdrawing in a fetal position on my floor, was the best choice I have made. From spiraling out of control and loosing it all, to building up a new prestigious career, brand new life, and most importantly, my peace of mind. I needed a break. A vacation from the lifestyle I was living. A trip back to reality. I couldn’t bear to live one more hour. FRC gave me it all. Get the hardest part over with. Make the call, you wont regret it.
I can't recommend FRC enough. This organization has truly been a life-changer and life-saver for me. My journey with FRC began in 2007 when I was a patient receiving care. I was at the lowest point in my life after… years of substance use and a near fatal suicide attempt. Under the care of Dr. Teitelbaum, The support I found there was instrumental in introducing me to recovery, and I am incredibly grateful for the nearly 18 years of sobriety I have today because of that start. To come full circle and later spend over 12 years working on the incredible FRC Team has given me a unique perspective. I will forever be grateful for having the opportunity to witness firsthand the profound, life-changing work that happens there every single day. My appreciation for FRC, its mission, and its dedicated staff is immense. Unfortunately, I am starting a new job in another city to be closer to my family, but I will always carry FRC with me. If you or a loved one is seeking help, you are in the best possible hands.
"It works, if you work it, so work it, you're worth it!" I came to the Florida Recovery Center a broken man, suicidal, no self-confidence, and a great lack of a sense of purpose and worth. Through intensive individual… therapy, group therapy, recreation therapy, in-depth 12 Step assignments and application, CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy), a multitude of informative and illuminating lectures (medical, recreational, spiritual, relational), and a greatly supportive community of people all working on the same goal of sobriety and sanity, I have been able to begin my life anew. I am now 90 days sober for the first time in 30 years thanks to FRC (Florida Recovery Center)!!!! I would not be alive to write this review had they not believed in me and, likewise, I had not believed and trusted the process. YOU must surrender to the process, be vulnerable, and be willing to choose LIFE for yourself - a good life without dragging around the heavy burdens of guilt, shame, and regret.....BUT YOU have to be honest with yourself and them or it probably won't work. IT WORKS IF YOU WORK IT SO WORK IT YOU'RE WORTH IT!!!!
FRC literally saved my life! Amazing staff and will have an amazing new facility soon!
Grateful for FRC, the men’s community, and the talented Doctors (Dr Titlebaum, Dr Smollen), and the therapist. I came in as a broken individual, and left with hope and working a recovery program. If you have a problem,… and want to get sober, this is the place to be at.
Sure! Here’s the revised review: ⸻ I cannot say enough about the life-changing care I received at UF Health Florida Recovery Center. After completing an 86-day PHP-level inpatient treatment, I can confidently say this… program is second to none in providing comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based addiction treatment. From day one, I felt truly supported by a team of dedicated professionals who understood the complexities of addiction, especially as it affects healthcare providers. The multidisciplinary approach—including expert medical care, therapy, group work, and therapeutic assignments—helped me rebuild my life from the ground up. The structured programming, combined with individualized treatment planning, made all the difference in my recovery journey. The emphasis on long-term sobriety, emotional wellness, and spiritual growth set this program apart. I left not only with the tools to maintain recovery but also with a renewed sense of purpose, confidence, and hope for the future. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, I wholeheartedly recommend UF Health Florida Recovery Center. This place saved my life, and I will forever be grateful.
The staff of the Florida Recovery Center changed my life. The treatment team is comprised of top level experts in the field of addiction treatment, the therapist are engaged and caring. My time at FRC laid a solid… foundation for sustained recovery and provided me with the necessary resources and tools to achieve this goal. I found the treatment to be challenging at times and encouraged my own growth. I can honestly state that at discharge I was a better, healthier version of myself and had achieved significant personal growth during my treatment. Like most of life you get out of any treatment or training what you put into it. I was resistive at first like many but learned to trust the process and engage the opportunity FRC presented me with. Today I can truly say that my time at FRC was some of the most profoundly impactful of my life and that the treatment team saved my life. They gave me the tools and keys to escape the hellation I had been living with.
If you are a person with even just a little integrity, this is not a place for you. The psychiatrists are not there to help you, but to show you that they have power over you and you can do nothing about it. You'll need… therapy to heal the trauma they cause for the rest of your life.
Sucks. Did nothing to help me, only made my life worse. 8 months sober now with new liver from my own work and choices.
Dr. Hollifield is mean and confrontational. I will never go back to see him.
The program is mostly put together great minus a few glitches. The therapists there are very good and the group sessions were great and I got a lot out of them. Thank you for all your help
The staff are highly trained, caring and professional, like all UF facilities. They work hard to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help people on their journeys through recovery. Staff are not afraid to share… their own experiences. The physicians and staff are adept at addressing a persons spiritual needs on whatever level that may be. They provide useful educational lectures about the science behind addiction, recovery, personality traits, and they integrate the family into a patient’s care. They allow safe level of personal freedoms.
I did the intensive outpatient program at FRC and would highly highly recommend it! I don’t think I would be sober today if I hadn’t. It gave me a lot of great coping mechanisms and skills, as well as gave me… connections and helped me feel less alone in my struggles. The therapist’s were great!
FRC is an excellent treatment center, the staff is very nice and caring. The therapist are well trained in addiction recovery, the program is design to improve in all areas, physical, emotional and psychological. I love… the meetings, the clases like DBT, CBT and medical lectures. The medication management is targeted to each individual and the introduction to the AA steps are great. I highly recommend this treatment center. It’s very expensive but if you have a good health insurance you should go there.
Don't do it the place is old and the turnover there is unbelievable very unprofessional and the apartments are substandard they have people sleeping in the living room and there is no TV they say because you won't have… enough time that is a lie it's one lie after the next things they don't tell you they charge you $2,200 a month no insurance will cover that trust me I did a month and a half there it was terrible.
Simply the BEST place to get clean and sober with amazing staff!
FRC will challenge you to be your best version. The counselors and psychologist strive to get to the root of your addictions. The process is usually 90 days for Healthcare professionals. It prepares you to return to… work and to ease into becoming a monitored health professional. The staff is very caring.
This place is the real deal. They utilize a collaborative interdisciplinary team that not only ensures soundness of body and mind, but harnesses the spirit of recovery. I will be forever grateful for the care I received… here.
Need treatment for chronic stress? Recover here. Need treatment for addiction? Need treatment for any mental health issues? Need a break from usual life? Don’t pass this place up. Take advantage. You’re seeing this… review for a reason. This recovery center can help you. You have to need it. You have to want it. Surrender to it. I did. What have you got to lose? You’re already spiraling out. Take back your life. 5 stars, and then some. Z
Hi I'm Tyson and I'm an alcoholic. Sober date, 3-28-24. FRC is the best thing that has ever happened to me. The program, the staff, the doctors, everything is the absolute best. This place saved my life.
FRC literally saved my life. I will forever be grateful to the staff and for my experience there. They have come to be like family to me and I know that they will be a continual source of support for the rest of my… journey.
The staff at FRC are caring and supportive. They understand what it feels like to be a patient and they were an instrumental part of my recovery. I am now 4+ years alcohol free and I owe much of that to FRC. Please… contact them if you need help.
I was a patient of FRC in 2017. They are caring, fully prepared, and professional. I would recommend to anyone in need of inpatient services without a doubt. Recovery is a difficult journey and FRC provides support to… their patients no matter their needs.
There is a reason FRC has an outstanding reputation. The staff here are top notch, the program is well conceived, the community as a whole is full of awesome human beings trying to better themselves, and I am thankful… for the experience here!
Can't say enough about how this place changed my life. They actually care and not a day does not go by where I don't think about the joy in my life thanks to my time there.
FRC changed me so many positive ways. Much of my life I had been trapped in unresolved trauma from childhood involving abuse, bullying and gay bashing, and undiagnosed sensory processing problems. I was in victim mode… and used alcohol and benzos to try to blot it all out. My successful professional career was beginning to falter as my addictions grew worse. FRC provided the intensive therapy I needed to start looking at my life in a different way. It helped me put that victim mode behind me. Most of all, it put me in the company of other men in recovery who accepted me as I was. They helped me see that the gay bashing of the past is no longer deserves to get free space in my head and control the way I react to today's world.
