About Johnson County Mental Health Center – Olathe
Johnson County Mental Health Center operates in Olathe. The site sits in Johnson County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Gardner, Lenexa and Overland Park. Kansas draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Residential treatment is delivered here, alongside medication-assisted treatment and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Treatment Services at Johnson County Mental Health Center
Residential treatment runs to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Residential here is short-term, which makes what follows discharge the more important question. Buprenorphine and naltrexone are available and paired with counseling rather than prescribed alone. Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers.

The service is based in Olathe, KS 66061, in Johnson County. The catchment reaches Gardner, Lenexa and Overland Park. Confirm what a program covers before traveling in, since the level of care listed is not always the level with capacity.
Ask what a first appointment involves and how long the current wait runs before making the trip. Opening hours shift with staffing, and an evening slot one month may not exist the next. Waiting times vary with capacity, so call ahead rather than arriving unannounced.

I've been going here for almost 2 decades. I will say it took some years to lock down the right treatment for me, but that can be said about navigating mental health help as a whole, not just JCMH.They've helped me when… I had no insurance and no money, they've even paid to uber me to appointments multiple times. Some of the meds providers can seem callous or like they're just pushing meds. But in my experience, the front desk staff, case managers, therapists, and nurses have always been top notch. Overall, more pros than cons.
Imagine getting paired with case management that tells you to do things on your own and they act like services are a time limit base. That's this place.
A former administrator introduces our "lovely", "fun", and "interesting" case to her staff in an email. I wonder if they talk about all their clients this way in private, or it was only us. She met neither with me or my… son in person, and yet, she diagnoses me with autism (I am not autistic), she misrepresents every aspect of our case to her staff, who mock us and refer to us with contempt in their subsequent internal communications.
I am writing this to warn other parents who are looking for a safe, supportive environment for their child’s recovery. My experience with this facility was nothing short of a nightmare. The primary issue was the gross… lack of professional judgment by a counselor named Dani. On my son’s actual discharge day, a time when he should have been reinforced with boundaries and a solid aftercare plan—Dani essentially gave him "permission" to use again. As a parent, you expect these professionals to be the last line of defense against addiction. Instead, the mixed signals provided by the staff completely derailed his progress. Because of the "green light" he felt he received from his counselor, he was back to using within just one week of being out of the program. The Bottom Line: Advice given by staff was contrary to recovery goals. Poor Discharge Planning No real protection or mental preparation for the "real world." Wasted Effort Months of hard work were undone in a single exit interview. If you are looking for a place that takes sobriety and long-term mental health seriously, look elsewhere. This facility failed my son and our family.
Do not go her at all all i got was how do we help you and all I got was I can't help you be cause your not a customer Clint Update the after hours crisis line has helped me for 3 years they are really good about that… but the building itself that I went to don't go oh they also have a commercial that you matter no they just hang up update: after hours hotline they don't know what to do anymore either and neither do I again do not go here Don't even call him either C-
Jo Co men health has changed so much over many years. Idk what the people who work there are thinking. But it's not good for their clients. This place is designed to help people, not try and destroy their life's. I've… read comments. Sending law to people's homes just becz wkers only hear say & think sending law to their homes is the solution...its not...unless have solid proof to do so. Your only creating people to not trust in going there. This place needs to change how they function, becz way their doing it isn't helping people. I kno these workers have to do what there told to do, unfortunately it's not working doesn't look nor sound like. Hope they come up with a better way of helping people.
Had a couple appointments last summer, but didn't get much help. I am deaf and I requested a therapist that specializes in deaf therapy and never saw the deaf therapist. The two.appiontments were basically repeated… questions and they kept asking for my phone number and asked if I was having suicidal thoughts and i answered yes and they asked if I was at risk of being homeless and I answered yes. They just gave me a list of food pantries and other phone numbers to call for rent assistance and temp housing, I went through the list and none of the rent assistance and housing places can help me. A few food pantries gave me food for less than a weeks worth of food and said come back next month. I do not recommend joco mental health. Also, I wondered why they needed my weight and height and had to take my picture.
Essentially told them my son was suicidal and they told him that they couldn’t help him.
If you have a crisis, just pray that a police officer doesn't come for you. J. King is a boldface liar. He forced me to go to the hospital claiming that all I had to do was talk to a professional for a few minutes, play… nice, then I could go home. Hours later after being poked and prodded, held down by 6 officers while given an injection (I have no idea what poison they injected) To this day I have nightmares about the experience. This all came about from a concerned person from across the country. Someone I didn't even know. Thanks, Mr J King. I no longer trust mental health or poli e officers
Best experience I have ever had at a mental care facility. From what I'm reading of other reviews, intake can be kind of hit or miss, but if you have a chance to give it a shot i would definitely recommend. Staff are… friendly and recognize me every time I come in, they're very flexible with transport limitations (before I got on the jc disability transit service they footed the cost for ubers to get there and back!), the case worker I've been working with (Neil Shu) advocates for me and has gotten me so much closer to getting my life on track. Incredible service if you can get past the intake requirements!
Run for your live. In the last year of my care i was so overly medicated that i became physically sicker and sicker. There were 7 incidents where i could not get my medications on time in one year. They did nothing to… warn me about withdrawal or how bad it gets. The doctor ignored my complaints. So in the end i almost died and believe me if i could bring a lawsuit for malpractise against them i would. They need to be closed down including their inept psychiatrists.
I went here about a year ago when my school counselor was trying to get my mom to take me to see a mental health professional. From my experience everyone was very kind but I could not be open. My mother was brought… into the room when they questioned me and I wasn’t comfortable asking her to leave or answering the questions honestly with her there. I was told I don’t meet the criteria for their services which was mostly my fault for lying during the questioning. I know it was my fault but I just wish they didn’t invite my mother into the appointment.
Not bad. just the drug counselor we got is in school an not what you would call street smart .she has given my child incorrect facts about drugs and is not very knowledgeable!!
I'm honestly puzzled by this place. A few weeks back, I showed up bright and early on a Friday, only to wait for an hour and find out that only 2 out of 6 folks were available for intakes. They assured me, 'This never… happens.' But guess what? It did. They asked me to come back another Friday. So, today, I lined up as the third person, waiting for them to open. When I finally got in, I had to wait another half-hour, only to be told I should have come at a sooner time, because the next available slot was 2:00. I WAS THE 3RD PERSON IN THE DOOR. I made it clear last time that I couldn't stay past 1:30 because I needed to pick up my daughter from school in Topeka. And I shared my frustrations about past experiences with mental health 'pros' who seemed to care but really didn't. Johnson County Mental Health, you've pretty much sealed the deal for me. I've lost faith in mental health care altogether. I don't think there's a single place out there that genuinely cares. So, if you're looking for a place with sincerity and care for you, don't bother with Johnson County Mental Health.
The staff there was so unprofessional and rude and I called the police to ask them to take me somewhere else .I won't ever go there
Attending therapy here has been a tremendous healing experience for me. Lots of insight and encouragement. Wish I'd been coming here sooner.
I've worked with jcmh for years and I feel like it's kind of touch and go but they are mostly reliable. Just thought I would let you know, the phone number that it goes to when you click call, it a JCCC phone number.… Not jcmh
HAVE INSURANCE BUT WAS DENIED TALK THRAPY DUE TO LACK OF GOALS EVEN THO A LOT AREARS OF MY LIFE DEPEND ON IT AND I DO HAVE GOALS BUT THEY COST MONEY, SOMETHING THAT I DON'T HAVE, SO BASICALLY IM DEPRIVED THERAPY DUE TO… LACK OF MONEY & THATS SO JOHNSON COUNTY FOR YA!!
Don’t waste your time here. Sit and wait hours for multiple days just to get told to come try again just for an intake assessment.
They have just done a very good job for us in every aspect. very nice we appreciate that.
The BEST services I have seen in 6 different counties, and 2 different states over 20 + years. Always friendly, helpful, and professional.
Dr. Nickell rushed me my insurance paid for 15 minutes I got only 9 minutes she did not care about my compulsion she spent 10 minutes talking to the receptionist about eating cake and how she wanted to go home. She was… 5 minutes late and was typing like a maniac she kept rushing. I contact the medicaid inspector on her and nami.
Terrible service or lack thereof. Apparently if you’re not ready to hurt yourself or somebody else or have an addiction issue you are not sick enough for them to see you. The list of resources they give are a joke
I personally went here and would not recommend it at all. Jenny was my case worker and she was absolutely horrible she became friends with my stepmother and would talk to her more than the actual patient(me). I have… moved out of the state and have not been in contact with jenny and she is still on a friendly level with my awful stepmom, which is not allowed as I have been told.
I brought someone here for an appt today and sat in the waiting room while they had their appt. I want to say during the hour + i waited the lady Deb who was checking everyone in was extremely kind and patient with the… people who were coming in and out. I know this can be challenging population to work with and she was kind kept a smile on her face. So thank you Deb for being kind and patient. They are very lucky to have you.
I’m an inpatient therapist at a local psychiatric hospital working with individuals with suicidal ideation as well as severe and persistent mental illness. I work with Johnson County Mental Health frequently (so much so… that I can recite all addresses and phone numbers off the top of my head), both for new clients as well as their current clients. Front desk staff - Phenomenal. I am always able to speak with someone with minimal wait time (if any), and they are always kind and personable. Case managers - I will preface by saying they have some awesome case managers and they have others that are not very involved or responsive when trying to coordinate care. However, this is typical for any mental health center. I am also glad that the majority of case managers have been following up with their clients in the community as this was not happening during the last year. Therapists - Based on feedback from my patients, many of the therapists leave a lot to be desired. From my Experience, they are difficult to get ahold of, and don’t meet very consistently with patients. It also isn’t clear what goals are being addressed during therapy. Medication Management Providers - Easy to schedule medication follow ups, and seem competent overall. I also appreciate that they are very cautious about prescribing controlled substances. Crisis - I know they’re doing their best given the increasingly high demand for services, but it would be helpful if they could be more flexible with coordinating care for new patients or our involuntary patients who often lack basic needs or compliance issues that prevent them from coming in for walk in assessments.
