Treatment Centers in Kansas That Accept KanCare

KanCare, the program through which Kansas runs Medicaid and CHIP, pays for drug and alcohol rehab through three health plans: Healthy Blue, Sunflower Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Substance use treatment is part of every KanCare plan, from outpatient counseling and withdrawal management to residential stays and medications for addiction treatment.

Every program listed below carries its own phone number, a rundown of its care levels and, if it has one, a Joint Commission or CARF credential. The entries rest on government treatment registers and on licensing files from the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. Pick a town or a level of care, then call to learn which KanCare plans the program bills.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Does KanCare Cover Rehab in Kansas?

Yes. KanCare covers drug and alcohol rehab in all 105 Kansas counties, and the state’s own benefits page says substance use services are included in every KanCare plan. Programs that bill the Medicaid program in Kansas appear among the rehab centers across Kansas listed here, sorted by town and level of care.

KanCare launched in January 2013 and runs under a Section 1115 demonstration whose current approval runs from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2028. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is the single state Medicaid agency and oversees the plan contracts, while the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services runs the substance use and mental health side.

Which KanCare plan handles rehab in Kansas?

KanCare plans handle rehab themselves, because Kansas carves behavioral health in: Healthy Blue, Sunflower Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan each cover physical, mental health and substance use care under three-year state contracts covering calendar years 2025 through 2027. That same New Year’s Day, Aetna Better Health of Kansas stopped being a KanCare plan.

Does KanCare Cover Inpatient Rehab in Kansas?

Yes. The KanCare demonstration covers inpatient addiction treatment and residential rehab programs, and its substance use authority lets Kansas claim federal funds for stays in larger facilities that count as institutions for mental disease. Under the demonstration, a Kansas residential program has to provide addiction medications itself or set up access to them elsewhere.

How long will KanCare pay for residential rehab?

KanCare publishes no fixed day count for a residential stay; Kansas instead aims to keep the statewide average residential stay at 30 days or under. Placement follows the Kansas Client Placement Criteria, built on the ASAM criteria, and the demonstration requires residential placements to be assessed independently, so 30-day rehabs taking Medicaid and longer stays both run on clinical need.

Does KanCare need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes. Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services policy BHS 701, effective April 15, 2019, requires prior authorization for intensive outpatient and every higher level of care, including inpatient and residential treatment. Assessments, individual and group therapy, case management, peer support and methadone dosing need none. The member’s own KanCare plan makes the authorization decision.

Does KanCare Cover Detox in Kansas?

Yes. The KanCare demonstration counts medically supervised withdrawal management within its substance use continuum, and the state agency lists both acute detoxification and social detoxification among the treatment service types licensed in Kansas. Medically supervised detox programs and detox units taking Medicaid are listed by town on this page.

Does KanCare Cover Outpatient Rehab in Kansas?

Yes. KanCare covers outpatient counseling and intensive outpatient treatment, and both the UnitedHealthcare and Sunflower member handbooks say no primary care referral is needed for behavioral health services. Outpatient treatment programs start without prior authorization, while intensive outpatient programs taking Medicaid need the plan’s authorization before the first group session.

Kansas certifies substance use peer mentors as Kansas Certified Peer Mentors through the state behavioral health agency, and KanCare bills peer support without prior authorization. The plans add their own extras: UnitedHealthcare lists peer coaching, Healthy Blue offers its CommonGround Recovery Library, and Sunflower has offered a Teladoc Mental Health digital program for aftercare and continuing support.

Does KanCare Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Medication assisted treatment with counseling is part of the KanCare substance use continuum, and all three plans use one state Preferred Drug List that the Kansas Medical Assistance Program keeps and updates monthly. Because the Kansas Department of Health and Environment publishes that list, medications for addiction treatment sit on the same terms in every KanCare plan.

Does KanCare cover Suboxone?

Yes. KanCare covers buprenorphine treatment, and state criteria revised April 19, 2023 require prior authorization only for buprenorphine without naloxone, the single-ingredient form. That form needs pregnancy or a documented naloxone allergy, a dose under 24 mg a day and no benzodiazepines. Suboxone programs taking Medicaid can look up the combination product on the current drug list.

Does KanCare cover methadone?

Yes. Kansas licenses opioid maintenance outpatient treatment through its state behavioral health agency, and the 2019 state policy lists methadone dosing among the services that need no prior authorization. Methadone clinics in the listings bill the member’s KanCare plan, and UnitedHealthcare’s KanCare page describes medications and substance use treatment as covered with no copay.

Does KanCare cover naltrexone and other medications?

Yes. Under federal Medicaid law, medications for opioid use disorder, naltrexone included, have been a required benefit in every state since CMS guidance in December 2020. In Kansas they sit on the single KDHE Preferred Drug List that all three plans follow, so naltrexone programs taking Medicaid and buprenorphine prescribers bill the member’s KanCare plan.

KanCare Rehab Centers Near Kansas Lakes, Rivers and the Cimarron National Grassland

KanCare has no regional carve-up of plans, so a member in a lake town, a river city or the far southwest of Kansas picks from the same three health plans. The setting changes the drive, not the benefit, and residential stays need the plan’s authorization wherever the program sits.

KanCare rehab near Kansas lakes and reservoirs

KanCare members around Milford Lake near Junction City, Tuttle Creek Lake north of Manhattan and Clinton Lake outside Lawrence can browse reservoir-country rehabs and treatment options in Junction City. A residential stay by any of these reservoirs needs the same prior authorization from the member’s plan as one in Wichita or Topeka.

KanCare rehab along the Arkansas and Kansas rivers

KanCare members in the Arkansas River valley live along a line from Garden City and Dodge City through Great Bend and Hutchinson to Wichita, while the Kansas River links Manhattan, Topeka and Lawrence. Rehab programs near rivers and Hutchinson treatment programs follow the same KanCare rules found in every county.

KanCare rehab near the Cimarron National Grassland

KanCare members in Morton County live beside the Cimarron National Grassland, which the U.S. Forest Service manages near Elkhart in the state’s southwest corner. The nearest listings include Forest Service land rehabs and Dodge City rehab options, and Sunflower and UnitedHealthcare both cover all 105 Kansas counties.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts KanCare in Kansas?

Browse the listings on this page. Programs appear with a direct number, their KanCare-relevant services and any accreditation, sortable by town, service and how they are paid. Programs listed under Medicaid rehab listings include those billing KanCare; ask admissions which of the three plans the program has a contract with.

KanCare admission to intensive outpatient, residential or inpatient care runs through the member’s plan, which authorizes those levels. The program sends that request along with its assessment, or the member phones their plan and gives the program’s name. The plan lines below are the authorization and benefits step, not a way to find a program.

KanCare rehab in Wichita and Sedgwick County

KanCare members in Wichita choose among Healthy Blue, Sunflower Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, the same line-up as the rest of Kansas. Members who were with Aetna Better Health until the end of 2024 were moved to Healthy Blue unless they picked another plan, which matters when calling treatment centers in Wichita about which plan a member now holds.

KanCare rehab in Kansas City, Overland Park and Johnson County

KanCare members in Johnson and Wyandotte counties live in Blue KC’s territory; Blue KC is one of Healthy Blue’s three owners, with an Elevance Health subsidiary and the Topeka-based Kansas Blue plan. All three KanCare plans also serve rehab centers in Overland Park and Kansas City, Kansas treatment programs.

KanCare rehab in Topeka and Lawrence

KanCare is run from Topeka, where the state’s Behavioral Health Services office sits at 503 S Kansas Ave. and answers on 785-296-3471 about licensing and state programs. Members in Shawnee and Douglas counties still go through their health plan for authorization at Topeka addiction treatment programs or rehab programs in Lawrence.

KanCare rehab in Salina, Garden City and western Kansas

KanCare reaches western Kansas through the same three statewide plans, and each plan coordinates transportation as part of the KanCare benefit, which matters where programs are far apart. Members in Saline, Finney and Ford counties can compare Salina addiction treatment with Garden City treatment options before asking their plan.

Can I use KanCare for rehab in a different state?

Only with your KanCare plan’s prior authorization, unless it is an emergency. Handbooks from UnitedHealthcare and Sunflower require advance plan approval for out-of-network care that is not an emergency, and emergencies are covered anywhere. A member near Kansas City who wants a Missouri program asks the plan before admission, not after.

How much does rehab cost with KanCare?

Nothing in copays: the 2026 KanCare enrollment booklet says KanCare does not have copays. Members with an unmet spenddown should ask about their status before services start. Kansas has not expanded Medicaid, so adults without children who are not disabled or elderly cannot qualify, and parents qualify only up to 33 percent of the federal poverty level.

KanCare is not the only payer for Kansas treatment. Kansans without Medicaid can get a state-funded assessment through Carelon Behavioral Health of Kansas on 1-866-645-8216, option 2, and listings also show state-funded rehab programs and sliding scale treatment programs by level of care.
