Sober Living Homes in Kansas

Sober living homes in Kansas are shared houses where residents agree to stay free of alcohol and drugs while they rebuild routines, work and recovery supports. Listings here appear in Newton, Lawrence, Topeka, Shawnee, Dodge City and Junction City, and most sit in towns rather than large cities.

Kansas has no state certification for recovery residences that our research found, so the questions you ask carry more weight here. This guide covers how sober homes differ from treatment, support levels, costs, medication policies, tenant rights, overdose safety and how to use the listings.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Kansas cities have sober living homes?

Newton tops the list of Kansas places where sober living homes cluster, followed by Lawrence, Topeka, Shawnee and Dodge City. Newton, Olathe and Topeka are the larger cities near these listings. Anyone searching from the Olathe or Shawnee area can compare homes across these places and ask about house rules, curfews and waiting lists.

Does KanCare cover sober living in Kansas?

Healthy Blue, Sunflower Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan carry KanCare members, and coverage follows whichever plan a person is enrolled in, with behavioral health built into all three.

Nearly all of the sober living homes in Kansas record accepting KanCare, the state's Medicaid program. Asking the house manager which plan the home works with clarifies costs before moving in, along with any amount a resident would still owe.

Which sober living homes in Kansas are close to a river?

Within 25 miles of most of the sober living homes in Kansas lies a river. The May Branch Whitewater River, the Wakarusa River and the North Branch Wakarusa River are the leading river names near these homes.

From each listed facility, the median distance to the nearest river is about 11 miles. Residents who value time outdoors can ask a house manager which parks or trails are within reach.

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home is alcohol- and drug-free shared housing, not treatment, which is the main way it differs from rehab in Kansas. Residents pay rent, follow house rules and arrange their own meetings, counseling or outpatient care.

Residential treatment, by contrast, provides clinical care around the clock, and the Behavioral Health Licensing unit of the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services licenses those programs as substance use disorder treatment facilities. A correctional halfway house is different again: placement there is part of a sentence or supervised release, not a housing choice.

Many residents pair a sober home with an intensive outpatient program in Kansas or other outpatient rehab across the state. Anyone who needs withdrawal care or 24-hour support usually starts with residential rehab in Kansas and moves into housing later.

Kansas has no state certification or registry for recovery residences that this research turned up, so standards depend on each operator. Before moving in, ask for the full price in writing, the house rules, the drug testing policy, whether residents on buprenorphine or methadone are accepted, and what happens after a return to use.

Are sober living homes in Kansas certified or regulated?

Kansas has no state certification or registry of recovery residences that our research found, and the National Alliance for Recovery Residences lists no Kansas affiliate. In states with an affiliate, that group certifies homes and publishes a list residents can check. Kansas has no such list. A home that offers housing alone is not a licensed treatment facility. If a Kansas home claims a certification, ask who issued it and ask to see the document.

What do the support levels mean?

Some homes describe themselves using four national support levels. The levels describe staffing, not quality.

LevelWhat it usually looks like
Level I, peer-runResidents share chores and decisions; no paid staff
Level II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident enforces rules
Level III, supervisedPaid staff, set schedules and life-skills support
Level IV, service providerHousing within a licensed treatment setting with clinical staff

How much does sober living cost in Kansas, and who pays?

Residents usually pay the rent at a Kansas sober home, weekly or monthly. We found no published Kansas cost range, so ask each home for the full price in writing. That should include deposits, testing fees and refunds if you leave early. No state source we found says whether KanCare or private plans pay any part of a stay, so ask the home and your plan. Treatment you attend while living there is a separate matter, covered on our Medicaid coverage page.

Help with rent may come from other routes. The Kansas Fights Addiction Grant Review Board, part of the Attorney General’s office, awards opioid settlement money to state agencies, local governments and nonprofits for prevention, treatment and recovery. Local recovery groups may know of housing help funded this way. If a district court specialty program is part of your case, ask your case manager. See court-ordered rehab in Kansas and state-funded rehab in Kansas.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Ask every home the same questions, in writing if possible:

What are the house rules and curfew? How often is drug testing, and who pays? Is there a minimum or maximum stay? What is the refund policy, and how much notice do you get before discharge? After a return to use, does the home help you reach treatment or a safe place to stay, or must you leave that day?

Sudden discharge is a high-risk moment, so a clear answer to that last question matters.

Can you live in a sober home while taking medication for opioid use disorder?

Kansas homes differ on buprenorphine and methadone. Ask whether residents on medication are accepted and how doses are stored. The state’s list of opioid treatment programs places all of them in the Kansas City area, Lawrence, Topeka and Wichita, so daily methadone dosing is hard to reach from western Kansas. See Suboxone clinics in Kansas and methadone clinics in Kansas.

What protections and safety steps apply?

Federal fair housing law generally protects people in recovery who are not currently using illegal drugs from housing discrimination. Complaints can go to federal housing authorities, and legal aid offices can help you file.

Every sober home should keep naloxone on hand. Tolerance drops after time without opioids, so a return to use carries real overdose risk, especially after discharge. The Kansas Naloxone Program, run by DCCCA, offers free naloxone and training to any Kansas resident or organization. Pharmacists can also furnish naloxone under a Kansas Board of Pharmacy protocol. A 2024 Good Samaritan law protects people who seek help for an overdose and cooperate with responders: they are immune from prosecution for drug and paraphernalia possession.

Where are sober living listings in Kansas, and how do you search them?

Sober living listings in Kansas lean toward towns: 57 percent sit in towns, 29 percent in rural areas and 14 percent in cities. Of the mapped homes, 86 percent are within 25 miles of a river, at a median of 11 miles away. The May Branch Whitewater River is the one named most often. Kansas City International is the most common nearest major airport, and the median airport distance is 28.6 miles.

Filter the listings by gender, medication-friendly policy, populations served, location and language, then call with the questions above. The KDADS Statewide Substance Use Treatment Referral Line, 866-645-8216, option 2, handles treatment referrals. Listings draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves. RehabSeekers.com does not rank or vouch for any home.
