Back in 2016 to 2019, I utilized both the summer day program and crisis respite placement when my mental health took a significant decline. I've also had therapy in a Sagamore office in my alternative school for… counseling. My experiences at the center itself have been mostly positive. There were plenty of activities set for myself and the other adolescents in the day program, and the staff themselves were very personable and kind. I loved doing yoga, having relaxation sessions, singing, and learning other practical and coping skills. I also really enjoyed my time at the respite home. It was quiet during my time there, and we'd occasionally watch movies and do activities outside the home. On the other hand, the office at the school was a mixed bag to say the least. The therapist I was primarily paired with was "forced to retire" after I've had multiple sessions spanning years, along with other patients, where we all felt dismissed, ignored, and she'd just tell our parents everything she told us without our knowledge. Even things that weren't emergencies or about immediate harm. The therapist(s) I had that weren't her were all great, though. The psychiatrist at that office, while reasonable with medication management, was also just really cold and disinterested every time I met him. Not sure if he's still there. I have my mixed feelings with Sagamore, but my experience shows there are definitely well-meaning people in this particular center. The people there have helped to kick-start a difficult yet great change for myself. I have no knowledge on the in-patient side, but I hope the same amount of care is given to their patients.
Great school! Went for a tour and it was a fun experience and all the staff and teachers were really nice including the school psychologist! After reading all these bad reviews about the place I don’t think they’re… right! Sagamore is a great school and I might be going to that school! Thank you Sagamore!!
Nice to see some things don't change. I was in sagamore in 1973. I thought they shut this place down. Beaten, drugged and sexually abused. Incorrectly diagnosed as emotionally disturbed. So far off the mark, i was 8 and… angry with adhd but i never got any help just abuse. This wasnt the only place. There was plainview divisonal center for youth 1n 1972. Little flower wading river 1977. BOCES Huntington 1979. Finally one last place melville house. The only place that helped.
This place should be a last resort, I was here twice as a kid ages 8-9 and 11-12. Both times I ended up far worse than when I got there. Mental abuse physical abuse, I recall when I was on the intake unit and I was… having a hard time adjusting and didn’t want to sit in the tv room with everyone else and the staff instead of talking to a 9 yr old child purposely gave me medication I was allergic too, they’re reason was if I wanted something to counter act it I’d shut up and sit in the tv room. My first day honestly I wasn’t even there half of the day yet and they were straping kids to beds putting things over their mouths so they couldn’t speak. I remember when I had been moved to H unit. I’m grateful For a few of the staff that really helped me Mr. Jimmy Mrs joy “one of the teachers” on the elementary side. Ms Allison one of the rec staff. And the nurse that was on h unit during my time, other then that all other staff were horrible and had no business working with children. witnessed staff beat up a special needs kid named Joesph because he didn’t want to shower, they dragged him on the floors kicking and hitting him slamming him up against the brick walls, holding him down in the shower etc.. one of those staff members involved was already being sued by a family for sexual misconduct on the girls unit and wasn’t allowed near the girls, let alone letting the kids have sex on the coed units.. the list goes on, i remember getting in trouble in the school section and being in what they considered “detention” And letting kids jump other kids the staff didn’t like to the point where I watched a kid get his head split open by another kid because the staff asked him to shut the kid up. Getting out of this place was harder then actually being helped and attended to, the doctors would lie to parents saying the child did this or that to mess up discharge release, it happened to me aswell as many others that have left reviews. How this place is still Open beyond me but I really hope this place has changed for the youth that really need help. If you have the resources send your children elsewhere.
I was abused badly here, mentally and physically. I've found that clinics with more connection to this hospital as aftercare programs are similarly low in quality control.
I experienced and witnessed severe malpractice here.
I was in Sagamore for 13 months, 25 years ago, I still remember it vividly, the smells, the walls, the art room, the barbed wire on the fences, the feeling of having thorazine forcefully injected into me. Understand… that if your child spends extensive time here, they will be affected by it, they will be resentful toward you in the future for not fighting harder for a different solution. If you love your child, do not allow them to be placed in sagamore.
I remember being on F unit in 1996 and it was nice thanksgiving and Christmas parties and a case worker came and took some of the patients out for dinner. We had pay call on Thursdays 😂 mellaril was the medicine of… choice back then 💊 glad to see this place still open .
I have to say my daughter speaks nothing but great things about this place and she’s been in and out of different places for a couple years now, but this experience for her has so far helped as far as structure… activities and even just feeling like a normal kid. I myself don’t think I have anything bad to say based on What I’ve seen and what I’ve been told.
Hello my name is jayden I was a former patient on H unit A side. Sagamore is honestly like a big toxic household I’ve been manipulated by staff, nurses, therapists, doctors and even teachers. I’ve even been assaulted by… staff before. I’ve even been bullied by staff and when I was to defend myself verbally I would be targeted and reported to my therapist. The staff here yell a lot and curse they can also be very condescending. In sagamore I would be afraid sometimes to even wake up because of what staff would be on my unit that day. That’s not it but try not to send your children here. Only, ONLY if necessary.
If I could give this place zero stars I would. I was at Sagamore 4 years ago when I was 16 and they gave me PTSD. They restrained me so often for sometimes the littlest of reasons when all I needed was someone to talk… to and hear me out. After Sagamore I ended up at a great residential program where they helped me worked through my PTSD that Sagamore has caused. The residential program taught me that I am a person and not a patient. Also, I still get nightmares from my time at Sagamore. I sometimes wake up screaming in a cold sweat all because they use so much physical force on an unviolent 16 year old girl who was struggling with severe depression, anxiety, and undiagnosed autism at the time. I can say now that no thanks to Sagamore that I'm finally in a place where I accept myself for who I am but I wish that Sagamore didn't give me PTSD. Because of the PTSD Sagamore gave me I still have struggles that I'm working through today that nobody should have to work through in the first place.
It is the best place for help, all the staff , doctors and therapists are excellent, they care about the patient and give them the best care, Congratulations to everyone for their excellent work.
I was there in the 90s as a teen and the only good part about this place...the two music teachers, both male, both genuinely gave a shit about every single one of the kids. They helped me escape through music, helped with… my self confidence, motivation, self respect, believing in myself and knowing my worth. One of my favorite life memories is of a talent show I did there. I wasn't going to do it but they pushed me to face my fears and I will never forget their kindness and love. I can't remember their names due to TBI so if you 2 amazing gentlemen see this know you have and never will be forgotten. I thank you for helping me love and heal myself through music 🎶 🙌 💖
Its so much a blur, during covid too. I remember how I felt like a animal in a zoo, barely ever saw my parents, I felt the psychologists there didn't even believe or trust what i was saying and going through. I was just… a very depressed and traumatized 12 year old, no one should have to experience all that.
I was here from the age 11-13 they gave me injections and tied me to a hospital bed for little to nothing they have zero patience with the clients maybe because all the workers are flirting with each other all day.… Everytime something arose it was either restraints(tieng me and other parties to a bed) or placing us in the quiet room which is a white padded room. morebtimes than not it’s dirty stinky especially if the last patient was a cutter there’s dry blood on the walls or stained blood tht was never able to come out . It’s a horrrific experience for any child no child should have to go through this especially when all they need is help not torture !!!
I hated what they did to me back in 1977 to 1980. Now I am 62 yrs old and still have bad dreams about that place
IN 2018 THE UNITED NATIONS CONDEMNED ALL COERCIVE AND INVOLUNTARY PSYCHIATRIC PRACTICES AND HAS DEEMED THEM A FORM OF TORTURE.
Ms jojo was nice but Ms Emma was yelling at me a lot
I remember going there during summer school in 2016. The playground, and the pool. I admit this was very nostalgic. Miss my old friends, and ashley...
Jayda Jones is the best receptionist person in sagamore ever dude!!! i called to get my medical records and she is so chill and is so funny too!! i was stressing (cause i need it for college) and she really my day so… much better. yall gotta give Jayda a raise ong, she made my whole week. i wish her good luck on her career!!
Stay away from this place
This place is the worse place to take your child to get help staff is very rude try talking to the director she was rude and did not want not help at all
This place is the worst try to find another solution they won’t help you they don’t even try
Good, take care and good staff
In 2023, the hospital reopened for children in grades 3 and 4. I can't tell you how much my daughter's behavior has improved! There are 4 kids in a class. My daughter loved her time at Sagamore. The follow-up care was… also the best! This is not the old Sagamore. This is a new hospital with top-notch care.
Was a patient in 2019-ish for day treatment when I was about 9. Although the hospital is less abusive now, it still wasn’t a great experience. I was just a suicidal young kid who was self harming constantly and yet we… get told that we are crazy. Most of 2019 is a bit of a blur because of how it was a traumatic year for me in general but In the 2 months I spent there I’ve seen kids sedated, restrained, unfairly punished, and isolated. We had no freedom and felt less than human. I know it’s a lot better than in years past, but I just hope no other child has to go through what I or other people with bad experiences went through.
