Rehabs That Take Utah CHIP

Utah CHIP is the state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program, covering children and teens in families whose income is too high for Medicaid but who lack other insurance. Benefits can include mental health and substance use services, varying by plan and level of care.

Utah treatment centers on this page list CHIP on their own websites. CHIP members in Utah receive care through contracted health plans, so network rules apply. Before admission, contact the facility and your child’s CHIP plan to ask whether the program is in network, whether prior authorization is needed, and what copays may apply.

Utah CHIP is the state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program: health coverage for a child under 19 whose family earns too much to qualify for Utah Medicaid but who would otherwise go uninsured. It is paid for jointly by the federal government and the state, written and administered by the Utah Department of Health Medicaid, and delivered to a family through a contracted health plan rather than by the agency itself.

The detail that shapes everything else for a parent is that Utah runs CHIP in two parts at once. Federal records class Utah as a combination state, operating both a Medicaid expansion for some children and a separately designed CHIP for others, and the two halves carry slightly different benefit rules. Which half a child sits in, and which of the three contracted plans holds the contract, together decide who authorizes a teenager’s addiction treatment and who answers the phone about it.

This guide covers what Utah CHIP is and who runs it, the three health plans a family can be enrolled with, who qualifies and how to apply, what the program has to cover for a young person’s substance use treatment, how authorization and medication rules work, what a family pays against Utah market prices, and how Utah CHIP differs from Utah Medicaid and from the Healthy U brand.
