About Nunkuwarrin Yunti Harm Minimisation Team – Adelaide

Nunkuwarrin Yunti’s Harm Minimisation Team works out of the organisation’s Adelaide primary health care clinic on Wakefield Street, offering free alcohol and other drug support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 18 and over and their families. No referral is needed to make contact.

An Aboriginal community-controlled health service, Nunkuwarrin Yunti brings the harm minimisation work together with the rest of the clinic: assessment, referral, counselling, outreach, and family and peer support sit alongside GP and health worker clinics, dental care, a needle and syringe programme and visiting specialists, including a psychiatrist who attends monthly. Clients can therefore have substance use and general health looked after in the same place, at no cost, during weekday business hours.

Nunkuwarrin Yunti Harm Minimisation Team Counselling Services

The Harm Minimisation Team at Nunkuwarrin Yunti in Adelaide provides alcohol and other drug assessment, counselling, outreach and referral – a non-residential service rather than a rehabilitation programme. Individual counselling and peer support are the named approaches, and families can be involved in the support offered.

An intake assessment opens the work, and outreach lets the team meet clients away from Wakefield Street where that is easier. Harm reduction runs through the wider clinic by way of a needle and syringe programme. Doctors are on site and a psychiatrist visits monthly as part of the clinic’s visiting specialist roster, and referral on to other services is part of what the team does. No prescribed medications are named for the harm minimisation stream itself.

Where Is Nunkuwarrin Yunti Harm Minimisation Team?

Nunkuwarrin Yunti’s Adelaide clinic, home to the Harm Minimisation Team, stands at 182-190 Wakefield Street, Adelaide, South Australia, postcode 5000, on the southern edge of the city grid. The harm minimisation workers are based inside the same building as the primary health care clinic.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. One number, 08 8406 1600, covers the team, and no referral is required, so a client or a family member can ring directly; health professionals can use the same contact channels. Because workers spend time on outreach and specialist clinics run on set days, it is worth confirming availability before coming in.

How Much Does Treatment at Nunkuwarrin Yunti Harm Minimisation Team Cost?

Support from the Harm Minimisation Team at Nunkuwarrin Yunti costs nothing. As an Aboriginal community-controlled health service running on government funding, the Adelaide clinic provides alcohol and other drug assessment, counselling, outreach, referral and family and peer support free of charge to clients and their families.

The needle and syringe programme carries no charge either. Nothing in the research sets out a private fee, an insurance route or a client contribution for the harm minimisation stream, and the GP, health worker, dental and visiting specialist clinics are part of the same community-controlled service. Travel to Wakefield Street is the only expense to plan, and reception can set out what is covered before a first appointment.

Nunkuwarrin Yunti Harm Minimisation Team Reviews

Reviews of the Harm Minimisation Team from around the web are limited, which is typical of a specific stream inside a much larger Aboriginal community-controlled health service. RehabSeekers hosts reviews for Nunkuwarrin Yunti, and anyone who has worked with the Adelaide team is welcome to describe the experience.

Comment that does circulate online generally covers the Wakefield Street clinic as a whole – the GP service, dental care or reception – rather than the alcohol and other drug workers. An account of the first conversation with a harm minimisation worker, how counselling and peer support felt culturally safe, and whether outreach made attending easier would tell a prospective client far more.

I have concerns about my experience with Dr Jonathan. At times, I have felt that the boundaries between being a doctor and being a friend are unclear, and I would prefer a more professional approach. I have also felt… that important information about my medication, including when and how to take newly prescribed medication, has not been adequately explained. I believe patients should be given clear instructions and have the opportunity to ask questions so they can feel confident about their treatment. I have also found that he sometimes laughs when I am discussing things with him, which can leave me feeling unsure whether my concerns are being taken seriously. I would appreciate a more professional approach, clearer communication about medication, and reassurance that my concerns are being heard and addressed appropriately.

This service have constantly let my son and myself down for nearly two years now. This is our real lives they are messing and making it harder, not easier. The service and workers I have had have not even met standards… the should be providing clients. We are seeking advice to put in further complaints and will be utilising new services immediately. Thank goodness for CAMHS 🙌🏽😁 And I second all reviews about phone service and receptionists.

Their phone skills are atrocious. They never call you back therefore their answering machine service is atrocious. You can’t even get through to a different department in the same business without getting hung up on and… no call back. I’ve been trying to get to them for literal weeks with no luck Shocking atrocious service for a so called doctors surgery

I had a terrible experience with the staff and they are very poor doing their job.. I had a dental appointment & the staff didn't notify me. the staff has retired with out notifing the client about the cancellation.. if… It was their family member they made sure to support their family. Ive worked in this sector years ago & this staff are Wrong for the position organisation.

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. Maureen is very rude and judgmental on the phone, often over steps her role and questions people’s credentials just to make herself feel on top. I will not be coming here… again. She has a short fuse. I heard her talking to other people on the phone in a very disgusting manner.
