About PsychMed Matrix – Adelaide

PsychMed Matrix in Adelaide is an abstinence-oriented intensive outpatient programme for adults aged 18 and over using methamphetamine, cocaine, or either alongside opioids. Psychologists run the groups with lived-experience co-facilitators, the treatment is listed at no cost, and no referral is required.

The structure is demanding in the early phase: seven group sessions spread over three days a week for the first 16 weeks, alongside individual and family sessions. A weekly support group then runs for a further 36 weeks, and PsychMed keeps in contact for a year beyond that. Clients already on drug replacement therapy can take part, and the Bagot House rooms on North Terrace sit in the middle of the city.

Facility Type

Outpatient Mental Health Clinic

PsychMed Matrix Alcohol and Drug Services

PsychMed Matrix delivers intensive outpatient treatment, aftercare, outpatient counselling, assessment and referral, and outreach from its North Terrace rooms. The core programme targets methamphetamine and cocaine use, including combined use with opioids, and runs on group therapy supported by individual counselling.

Family work is built in rather than bolted on: conjoint sessions bring relatives into treatment, and eight separate family support sessions are offered. Peer support runs through the programme via lived-experience co-facilitators and mutual support groups. The Matrix group itself meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 am. Mental health is noted alongside substance use, with no specific conditions named, and no medications are listed as dispensed here.

How Much Does Treatment at PsychMed Matrix Cost?

Treatment at PsychMed Matrix is free. The Matrix programme is government-funded, so the groups, the individual counselling and the family sessions carry no fee for clients or their relatives, and nothing is charged for the aftercare contact that continues after the group work ends.

No private pay rate, Medicare rebate, private health insurance billing, NDIS package or WorkCover arrangement is named for this programme. Because the first 16 weeks involve attending three days a week, travel into the city is the real cost to plan around. The intake team can set out what is covered before the first group.

PsychMed Matrix Reviews

Reviews of PsychMed Matrix from around the web are limited, which is typical of structured group programmes where clients value their privacy. RehabSeekers hosts reviews for this service, so anyone who has worked through the Matrix groups at Bagot House is welcome to describe what the programme was like.

The questions a newcomer usually has are specific: how the three-day-a-week schedule fitted around work, what the lived-experience co-facilitators added to the room, whether the weekly support group kept its momentum over the longer stretch. First-hand accounts answer those far better than general praise, and family members who attended the support sessions have their own perspective worth hearing.

I was very disappointed with their service. The female receptionist was not very professional, and her attitude was quite rude, which made the experience very unpleasant.

I’ve been trying for over a month to book a psychological assessment with Psych Med. Not a single clear answer. Emails ignored. No appointment. No timeline. Nothing. This isn’t just disorganised — it’s reckless. They… deal with vulnerable people in high-stakes family court matters where delays actually have consequences. In my case, their complete lack of response has directly impacted my Legal Aid situation. If you’re offering a service in this space, basic communication isn’t optional. Ignoring people who are relying on you isn’t just poor service — it’s unacceptable.

I saw Dr. Jacques Metzer some time ago, and my experience was absolutely shocking. From the outset, I found his manner to be dismissive and frankly rude. Rather than giving me the space to speak about my issues with… severe depression and anxiety, he dominated the session by talking almost the entire time. When I did try to explain what I was going through, he would react as if I said something stupid, and didn’t care at all. There was no sense of empathy or genuine interest in understanding my perspective. What was even more troubling was his tendency to make quick assumptions about me with very little information. Some of these assumptions were not only straight up wrong, but almost felt offensive - laving me feeling misunderstood and even more isolated. When I attempted to clarify or explain my point of view. The entire session felt like a waste of time and left me feeling extremely angry and upset than before I walked in. The experience was so negative that I don’t ever want to see a psychologist again in my life. It is baffling that he can talk to someone with mental health issues with such attitude. All I wanted to do during the session was storm out.

I would recommend this organisation to anyone going through any mental health issues as i had an extremely positive outcome after only a few one hour sessions and found every member of staff eager to help in any… possible way. My housemate urged me to thank my doctor saying my attitude and manners improved greatly after the weekly appointments.

They said that they'd taken time to match me with an appropriate psychologist but I soon realised that it was just whoever was free. I'm almost 30 and not autistic. They paired me with someone that specialises with… autistic children. The room stank as it was used for children. As an adult I didn't really want to be doing psychology appointments in a room full of children's toys, mess and bad smells. We changed rooms but this took 20 minutes that I would not get back and still had to pay for. She spent a lot of the session asking questions that I could've filled out in a form before coming to the appointment. She ignored me when I said I didn't want to talk about certain subjects even when she had just said previously that I can choose to not talk about anything that I don't want to. When I was visibly uncomfortable she made an unfunny joke about calling the police. I could also outwardly tell that she found me annoying. She told me that I need to get diagnosed for autism in the first session. I found this intense and confronting, especially when this is not what I went there for. I wanted to cry quite a bit for a few days after this. It cost me ~$90 out of pocket. I don't completely blame her, a friend said that the conditions at psych med are very horrible to work at. I would not recommend psych med.

Won't help you organise appointments except through calls which is hard for someone with my disability. I've never had an issue with getting help with making arrangements with any other place before but this place will… rather just abandon you completely instead of organising an appointment through an email address when I had already had an appointment there before so they know I'm a real person along with my concerns and difficulties.

Great staff and friendly environment. Everyone is welcoming and ready to help in any way you need. Great support and help for everything that is going on. 100% recommend people to check them out and just ask for help. I… know it's the hardest thing to do but just reach out and ask for help. They will help you find the best person for you.

Stunningly indifferent to needs.Called to rearrange an appointment I'd been waiting 6 months for. Receptionist obviously didn't care..Only offered to cancel appt. then maybe wait another 6 months. I'm already booked… with psych, they can't reappoint? Obviously only interested in profit. Do not use!

Nice personal friendly approach to clients and some useful courses are offerered in everyday coping in life/work online or in person. I learnt different approaches to issues I had struggled with but had no idea of a way… around previously. I moved on from being 'stuck' in a bad place mentally. I can thoroughly recommend Psychmed for managing modern day stress, anxiety and other psychological issues. John

My son is supposed to be seeing a psycholgist at the Giles Plains one but they keep cancelling on him. He has been going through a bad time lately. I rang them up to let them know he needs to talk, and he was booked in… that week. They cancelled again! The secretary said shed make a note on his file. Seems like they don't care.

Over the weekend I attended psych med graduation at Torrensville.. I listened to what they had to say Nat Cook and Quentin and I found it to be about themselves and not the people who graduated! IT seems like that they… are a very clicky group, not talking to the graduates but rather a get together for their own benefits.. It also seemed like that they have all the answers great speaches very poor in the practical.. All about their founding rather than people suffering from mental health issues.. 2 per cent on suicide prevention how poor is that.. could say more but it only falls on deaf ears..

I am surprised to find any negative feedback, i wonder if those bad experiences have more to do with the fax number being listed on google as a contact. I've been a client of Psychmed for around ten years now, actually… watched it grow from tiny three office building on Hutt st to the Nth Tce offices. I've had three therapists here, one moved into his own private business, one didnt work out and the other I've been seeing for 4 years now. They bulk bill, take mental health plans and medicare subsidies, offer group therapy, i've participated in a free group here!! Changed my life, gave my life back to me when trauma and abuse had tried to take my happiness and value in life away. I commend, thank and recommend PsychMed, especially to any pensioner or financially limited people.
