Rehabs That Take POMCO

POMCO is a third-party administrator based in Syracuse, New York, that manages self-funded employer health plans. Those plans can include coverage for drug and alcohol treatment, such as detox, residential stays and outpatient programs, with benefits varying by plan, network and level of care.

Treatment centers in Massachusetts listed here name POMCO on their own websites. Your employer’s plan sets the benefits, so contact the facility and POMCO before admission. Ask about network status, prior authorization or referral needs, and what you may pay. Your HR or benefits team can also explain which network your employer’s plan uses.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is POMCO insurance?

POMCO is not an insurer. POMCO Group, founded in 1978 in Syracuse, New York, was a third-party administrator that processed claims for employers' self-funded health, dental and disability plans. The employer pays the claims, so treatment benefits come from the employer's own plan document.

UnitedHealth Group bought the business in 2017, and it now runs under the UMR brand, so cards from former POMCO employers usually say UMR today.

Is POMCO the same as UMR?

Yes, it is the same business under a newer name. Since UnitedHealth Group's purchase closed on March 31, 2017, POMCO's third-party administration work has operated under the UMR brand. UMR, formerly United Medical Resources, is UnitedHealthcare's administrator and is based in Wausau, Wisconsin.

If an older card still says POMCO, benefit questions now go to UMR at 800-826-9781, or to the toll-free number printed on the card.

Who owns POMCO?

UnitedHealth Group Incorporated, the publicly traded parent of UnitedHealthcare, listed on the NYSE as UNH. It announced the agreement with POMCO on March 6, 2017 and closed the deal on March 31, 2017, folding the Syracuse administrator into UMR, its third-party administration business.

Robert Pomfrey, POMCO's president and chief executive, left day-to-day operations after the deal while remaining available to clients for consulting.

POMCO is not an insurance company. POMCO Group, founded in 1978 at 2425 James St. in Syracuse, New York, was a third-party administrator: it processed claims and ran medical management for employers that fund their own health plans. That means the benefit for detox, residential treatment or counseling is written into an employer’s plan document, and the employer pays the claims out of its own money.

UnitedHealth Group announced on March 6, 2017 that it would integrate POMCO’s third-party administration business with its own, and the deal closed on March 31, 2017. The work has carried the UMR name since then, the third-party administration line of UnitedHealthcare, formerly United Medical Resources and based in Wausau, Wisconsin. An admissions team asking whether a program “takes POMCO” is really asking about a UMR-administered employer plan running on a UnitedHealthcare network.

This guide covers what a UMR-administered plan pays for at each level of care, where prior authorization applies, what the cost sharing looks like in two named plan documents, how addiction medication is handled, and how to work out which treatment program sits inside the network printed on the card.
