Psychcare Medicaid is not a plan anyone could sign up for. It is the Florida Medicaid side of Psychcare, LLC, a Miami managed behavioral health organization founded in 1988 that ran mental health and substance use benefits on behalf of other companies’ health plans. The coverage behind the name always belonged to a Medicaid health plan that hired Psychcare to manage the behavioral side of its contract.

That distinction decides who a caller should actually ring. A behavioral health manager holds the network and reviews requests for treatment; the health plan writes the benefit, sets the copays and pays the claim. Psychcare was the manager and never the insurer, and it stopped trading under its own name after Beacon Health Strategies bought it on February 1, 2011. Its work now sits inside Carelon Behavioral Health.

This guide covers what Psychcare Medicaid was and who set the benefit, the single state it worked in and the plan lines it served, what can be said about coverage of addiction treatment under the Florida plans that use its successor, what a Medicaid member pays, how the Psychcare name relates to the companies that absorbed it, and where to look now. The Psychcare-era record is thin, and this article stops where it stops.
