Rehabs That Take UMWA

UMWA refers to the United Mine Workers of America Health and Retirement Funds, which provide health benefits to eligible retired coal miners and their dependents. Benefits can include drug and alcohol treatment, varying by plan, network and level of care.Kentucky centers listed here name UMWA on their own websites. UMWA Funds coverage often works alongside Medicare, so the order in which each pays can affect what you owe. Before admission, contact the Funds and the facility to ask whether the center participates, whether prior authorization or a referral is needed for detox, residential or outpatient care, and what cost may apply.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is UMWA insurance?

UMWA health coverage comes from the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds, a group of union and federally created benefit trusts formed in 1946 that pay health and pension benefits for retired coal miners, their dependents and widows. It serves over 70,000 beneficiaries and is not a commercial insurer.

Its health plans include the Combined Benefit Fund, the 1992 and 1993 Benefit Plans and the Prefunded Benefit Plan. Member questions go to the Call Center at 800-291-1425.

Is the UMWA Funds the same as the United Mine Workers union?

No, the Funds is a separate administrative entity from the United Mine Workers of America, even though the union appoints trustees alongside the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association. Health and pension questions go to the Funds at 800-291-1425, not to the union office in Triangle, Virginia.

Day-to-day operations are carried out by the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds under contract with the UMWA 1974 Pension Trust, with administration based in Washington, DC.

Does UMWA cover drug and alcohol rehab?

Yes, with limits. The UMWA plans pay for emergency hospital detoxification and for alcoholism or drug rehabilitative programs on the outpatient side. Rehabilitation is covered only after an advance determination that the beneficiary is a good candidate, and the program must be state certified or licensed, accredited or otherwise authorized by law.

The 1993 Plan states parity between substance use and medical benefits, with no annual or lifetime dollar limits on that care.

UMWA on a health card means the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds, a group of self-administered union and federally created benefit trusts that pay health benefits for retired coal miners, their dependents and widows. It is not a commercial insurer, and that changes how addiction treatment is authorized, where it can be delivered and what the household pays.

The Funds was created in 1946 through a contract between the United Mine Workers of America and the federal government, and it now serves over 70,000 beneficiaries across its health and pension plans. Four health trusts sit under the same roof: the Combined Benefit Fund, the 1992 Benefit Plan, the 1993 Benefit Plan with its several programs, and the Prefunded Benefit Plan. Which one a household holds decides the copay, the detox limit and the network rules.

This guide sets out what the health plans pay for at each level of care, where an advance determination or precertification is required, what each 2026 program charges for inpatient and outpatient behavioral health, how medication is handled through the pharmacy benefit, and how to find a program that takes Funds payment.
