Sober Living Homes in Alabama

Sober living homes in Alabama offer shared, alcohol- and drug-free housing for people who want a steady place to live while they build recovery. Many residents move in after detox, residential care or an accountability court program. Each home sets its own rules on rent, curfews, testing and length of stay, so two houses in the same town can feel very different.

Listings on RehabSeekers.com draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and details supplied by the providers themselves. Use them as a starting point, then talk with each house manager before you commit to a move.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Alabama cities have sober living homes?

Sober living listings in Alabama gather first in Attalla, then in Anniston, Irondale, Holly Pond and Alexander City. Gadsden, Anniston and Birmingham are larger cities nearby, which matters for residents who need jobs and regular outpatient appointments.

Anniston appears both as a listing cluster and as a nearby larger city. When comparing homes, ask about house rules, curfew, transport to work and the outpatient programs residents attend.

Can I use Alabama Medicaid for sober living?

Alabama Medicaid is accepted by some of the sober living homes in Alabama. Payment runs fee-for-service, with no managed behavioral health plans, and providers certified by the Alabama Department of Mental Health submit claims to Medicaid themselves. Admissions staff can say whether house fees or only linked services qualify.

Rehab Centers in Alabama That Accept Alabama Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/alabama/alabama-medicaid/
Is there free or low-cost sober living in Alabama?

State-funded options are recorded by most of the sober living homes in Alabama, and about half of the sober living homes in Alabama record low-cost routes as well.

Some of the sober living homes in Alabama record sliding scale fees, and a few of the sober living homes in Alabama record free beds. The Alabama Department of Mental Health 24/7 Helpline, 844-307-1760, can be called any time about funded options.

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home is a shared residence where everyone agrees to stay alcohol- and drug-free. It is housing, not treatment.

Residential treatment is a clinical service, with licensed staff, assessments and a care plan. In Alabama that care falls under the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) certification rules for substance use providers. A correctional halfway house is different again. Halfway houses are run by or for the corrections system and house people under supervision as a condition of release.

Some Alabama homes sit close to outpatient programs or intensive outpatient programs that residents attend during the day.

Are sober living homes in Alabama certified or regulated?

Alabama has no state law requiring sober living homes to be licensed or certified, so certification is voluntary. The Alabama Alliance for Recovery Residences (AARR) became the state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) in July 2021. AARR certifies homes to national standards in partnership with ADMH.

An Alabama home that says it meets NARR standards should hold its certification through AARR, not directly from NARR. To find out whether a house is certified, ask the operator for its current certificate. Then contact AARR to ask whether the home appears among its certified residences.

What the NARR levels mean

NARR standards describe four levels of support. They do not rank homes from worse to better.

LevelTypical setup
I, peer-runResidents share decisions and there is no paid staff on site
II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident holds house meetings and enforces rules
III, supervisedPaid staff run a structured schedule with life-skills support
IV, service providerHousing is paired with clinical services, often inside a treatment organization

How much does sober living cost in Alabama, and who pays?

Residents usually pay the rent at an Alabama sober living home themselves, often weekly or monthly. Ask what the fee includes, such as utilities, food, drug testing, transportation and any program charges.

The Legislature appropriates opioid settlement money to ADMH, which awards prevention, treatment and recovery grants. Health coverage, including Medicaid, pays for covered treatment services. Don’t assume it covers rent; ask both the plan and the home before you count on it.

If an accountability court or probation officer referred you, ask whether the court program has housing arrangements. Our court-ordered rehab listings show related programs. Lower-cost care appears under state-funded rehab in Alabama.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Ask for the house rules in writing, then go through them with the house manager. Questions worth asking:

  • How often is drug and alcohol testing done, and who pays for it?
  • Is there a minimum or maximum length of stay?
  • How are deposits and refunds handled?
  • What leads to discharge?
  • What happens after a return to use?

A home that discharges people after a return to use should still have a safety plan. Ask whether staff help arrange a safe place to go or a referral to detox or treatment, so no one leaves at night with nowhere to stay.

Federal fair housing law can protect people in recovery from housing discrimination. That protection does not extend to current illegal drug use. A local fair housing organization or legal aid office in Alabama can explain how to file a complaint.

Medication for opioid use disorder and naloxone

Ask directly whether residents taking methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone are welcome, and how medication is stored. If you get care through Suboxone clinics, ask the clinic which homes its patients use.

Tolerance drops after time without opioids, so a return to use carries a higher overdose risk. Ask whether the home keeps naloxone on hand and whether residents know where it is. A State Health Officer standing order lets Alabama pharmacies dispense naloxone. The Jefferson County Department of Health mails free kits after a short online training.

Alabama’s Good Samaritan law, Code of Alabama 20-2-281, protects a person who seeks help for someone else’s overdose from prosecution for misdemeanor drug offenses. To be covered, the caller must be the first to call, give their own name and stay until help arrives.

Where are sober homes in Alabama, and how do you search these listings?

Fifty-six percent of Alabama’s sober living listings are in town settings and 44 percent are rural. Homes are listed around Attalla, Anniston, Irondale, Holly Pond, Alexander City and Florence.

Seventy-eight percent of homes are within 25 miles of a named summit such as the Ohatchee Mountains. The same share are within 25 miles of a waterfall, a median of 8.8 miles away, most often Noccalula Falls. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International is the nearest major airport for two in three listings. The median distance to the nearest airport is 48.4 miles.

Filters let you narrow the search by gender, through men’s and women’s listings. You can also filter by medication-friendly policies, populations served, location and languages. For other care types, start at the Alabama treatment page. Broader background is on our sober living homes guide.

The ADMH 24/7 Helpline, 844-307-1760, is staffed by peer specialists from the Recovery Organization of Support Specialists.
