Sober Living Homes in Arkansas

Sober living homes in Arkansas are shared houses where residents agree to stay free of alcohol and drugs while they work, attend outpatient care or rebuild daily routines after treatment. Rent, house rules and staffing vary from one home to the next, and we could not find a state certification list that residents can use to look a home up.

The listings here draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and the information homes and programs provide about themselves. Use them to compare locations, rules and who each house serves, then call before you commit to a lease or deposit.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Arkansas cities have sober living homes?

Little Rock leads the places where sober living listings in Arkansas cluster, followed by Fort Smith, Shannon Hills, Warren and Kensett. Homes in and around these places give residents a structured, substance-free setting during the period between formal treatment and fully independent living.

Hot Springs is another larger city in the wider area worth considering. Visiting a home before moving in shows how house rules, chores and curfews work day to day.

Rehab Centers in Little Rockhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/arkansas/little-rock/
Can I use Arkansas Medicaid for sober living?

Ask the house manager directly whether Arkansas Medicaid covers any part of the stay. Only some of the sober living homes in Arkansas record accepting it, partly because rent is often paid privately. PASSE plans such as Arkansas Total Care, CareSource PASSE, Empower Healthcare Solutions and Summit Community Care serve members with complex needs.

Rehab Centers in Arkansas That Accept Arkansas Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/arkansas/arkansas-medicaid/
Which sober living homes in Arkansas are close to a river?

Rivers sit a median of about 10.7 miles from listed sober living homes in Arkansas, and nearly all of the sober living homes in Arkansas are within 25 miles of one. The most-named are the Little Maumelle River, the Poteau River and the North Fork Ouachita River.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home, also called a recovery residence, is shared housing free of alcohol and drugs, and in Arkansas as elsewhere it is not treatment. Residents pay rent, follow house rules and usually work, study or attend care elsewhere, while rehab delivers counseling and medical care on site through a licensed program.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services licenses alcohol and drug treatment programs under its own standards, but the state does not appear to certify recovery residences. A correctional halfway house is different again, because placement there is part of a sentence or supervision.

Many Arkansas residents move into a sober home after residential rehab or while attending an intensive outpatient program. Housing and treatment stay as separate arrangements, so a health plan that pays for counseling should not be assumed to cover rent at the house.

House rules, fees and medication policies differ from one home to the next. Before paying anything, ask for the rules in writing, the full cost including deposits and drug test fees, and whether residents taking buprenorphine or methadone are accepted, along with what happens after a return to use.

Are sober living homes in Arkansas certified or regulated?

Arkansas does not appear to have a state certification program for recovery residences, and the national recovery residence association lists no Arkansas affiliate. We found no official list of certified homes that residents can search. We also found no rule on whether state-funded referrals must go to particular homes. The Arkansas Department of Human Services handles state substance use grants through its Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health. That office is the place to ask whether any list of recognized homes exists.

National standards sort houses by level of support, for homes that say they follow them. The levels describe staffing, not quality, so ask which level applies to the home you are considering.

LevelWhat it usually looks like
I, peer-runResidents run the house together, with house meetings and no paid staff on site
II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident oversees the rules; drug testing is common
III, supervisedPaid staff, set schedules and life-skills work; clinical care happens elsewhere
IV, service providerHousing linked to a licensed program that delivers the clinical services

What rights do residents have?

The federal Fair Housing Act protects people in recovery from a substance use disorder as people with a disability, as long as they are not currently using illegal drugs. That protection limits how landlords and local rules can single out recovery homes. Residents who face unfair treatment can file a fair housing complaint with federal housing authorities, and a local legal aid office can help with the process.

How much does sober living cost in Arkansas, and who pays?

Residents usually pay the rent themselves. We found no state source that lists typical Arkansas prices, so ask each home for the full cost in writing, including deposits, drug test fees and utilities. Arkansas DHS receives federal State Opioid Response funding, now in its fourth round. Ask the department or your treatment provider whether any of that money supports housing where you live. People in an Arkansas specialty court, such as an adult drug court, can ask the court coordinator about housing help.

Do not assume that Arkansas Medicaid or a private health plan will pay rent at a sober home; call the plan before signing anything. Coverage for treatment you attend while living there is a separate question, covered on our Medicaid page and in the state-funded rehab listings.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Get the house rules in writing and read them before paying anything. Then ask:

  • How often does drug testing happen, and who pays for it?
  • Is there a minimum or maximum stay?
  • What is the refund policy if you leave or are asked to leave?
  • What follows a return to use: a warning, a referral to care, or discharge?
  • If the answer is discharge, will staff help you reach a safe place that same day?

Medication for opioid use disorder

Some homes accept residents who take buprenorphine or methadone and some do not, so ask directly and get the answer in writing. You can filter the listings for medication-friendly homes. Nearby Suboxone clinics and methadone clinics can help keep your dosing within reach.

Naloxone and overdose risk

Tolerance drops after time away from opioids, so a return to use carries a higher overdose risk than before. Ask whether the home keeps naloxone and where it is stored. Arkansas has a statewide standing order under Act 284 of 2017 that lets pharmacists dispense naloxone. The DHS behavioral health office also runs a naloxone request page. The Joshua Ashley-Pauley Act, the state’s Good Samaritan law, gives protections to people who call 911 during an overdose.

How do you search these Arkansas sober living listings?

Every sober home listed in Arkansas sits within 25 miles of a river, most often the Little Maumelle River, at a median distance of 10.7 miles. Most, 87 percent, are in town settings. The nearest airport is most often Bill & Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, followed by Fort Smith Regional. The median distance to the closest airport is 9.3 miles.

Filters cover gender, medication policy, populations served, location and languages. The women’s rehab and court-ordered rehab listings can help when housing is part of a wider plan. Arkansas’s Mental Health & Addiction Support Line, 1-844-763-0198, appears on a 2024 state flyer, so ask whether it is still active when you call. More care types are on the Arkansas page and the national sober living homes page.
