RWJ Barnabas Hlth Behav Health Center – Toms River Detox and Rehab Services

The register shows RWJ Barnabas Hlth Behav Health Center – Toms River providing residential treatment and intensive outpatient. The structured element runs during the day and people go home afterwards. A proper assessment sets the level rather than leaving it to guesswork, and it is worth asking for one explicitly.

Mental health and substance use are handled together rather than in sequence. Ask what a typical week involves before committing, since the schedule determines whether the program is workable alongside work or family.

RJ Barnabas totally sucks. I do not recommend it. I've called four days ago still have not gotten a response. Nobody answered the phones. The system sucks when I was there at an appointment. No one was on the phone, so… why aren't they calling back look elsewhere

I was just there 8/2 - 8/7. All staff, nurses, mha's etc were awesome in helping me with my condition, the only negative things were more communication needs to be done for your loved ones at home that are not sure how… you actually are and what your treatment plans are. Also some of the security officers at the front desk are rude and abrasive to family members trying to bring needed supplies as they're not sure what to do or where to go. Lastly when things are brought in to security it shouldn't take a full day to get it to you. I know they have to go through and inspect but procedures could be sped up

I have never been hospitalized before for mental health treatment and I hope never to be again, but the kindness and compassion the staff shared with me was so inspiring and humbling. The staff who cared for me in Short… Term Care were all phenomenal, but Kelly and Jakob(sp?) stood out in particular. I came in to the facility with a horrible attitude after spending a terrible night at Community, and they turned me around. And the food was good! It sounds nutty to say I’m grateful for my time there, but I truly am.

Thank you to the staff, especially Kelly. They made my son feel heard and have hope. Kelly is so helpful and kind. Thank you for all you do, to help the patients that look to you for hope.

I am Chang, and I stayed in the STC for like a week. I personally like this inpatient stay - the staff there were very kind and caring, and the people there were extremely good. I miss my friends a lot: KB, Eric,… Michael, Brandi, Rhiz, Ben, Desire, and so many more!

Gloria, a nurse and security desk associate and Darrell, also their security guard, were so kind and personal. They were very engaging when I sat in waiting room after visiting a patient. Nice people!!

Unfortunately none of the nurses reached "baddie" status, which would land this score into a 0/5. Luckily Eric at the front desk single handedly carries this score into a 5/5. Real good guy.

I was misdiagnosed under two minutes by a doctor over a computer screen, and then when I was discharged they gave me a prescription that I never took, not even while staying there, at 100 mg, which would probably be not… safe for me. Also it’s very dangerous, as they group people together with others and let them run freely, and it’s not safe at all. There is zero security and no one is going to help you from another patient. Zero stars and needs to be investigated.

WORST! 0 ⭐️ if possible. The neglect and lack of empathy or compassion. From behind the scenes, they threaten, make and play by their rules, mistreat their patients such as nurses like Brenden and Nadine. The Doctors… (Dr.B) there threaten every patient with a needle to comply. They drug you up and release you. You’ll have unidentified bruises with lack of knowledge. Not clean either. I can’t wait for this place to be shut down! Definitely will be taking legal matters into my own hands.

This is truly an institution of healing. I can't speak highly enough of the doctors, nursing staff and support staff. They work very hard and as busy as it can be they provide exceptional care and are very quick to help… with any needs a patient may have during their stay. The adjunct therapists and nursing groups(such as art and music therapy) are run by very caring and dedicated individuals. They even have pet therapy (a beautiful German Shepherd and her owner came in and the dog was specially trained to be calm and obedient). It's not just a job to the workers from housekeeping to management and everyone in between care and provide amazing support. This is a short term stay facility so expect an average stay of 5 to 7 days. The food was delicious in my opinion and the portions are large. You can request double portions and if you don't jive with what is served the staff will bring you something else from the cafeteria. After a couple days they permit you to go to the cafeteria and if the weather cooperates staff will take you out into the courtyard for fresh air and vitamin d sunshine. I had a song stuck in my head so I asked a staff member if they could print the lyrics for me and they did without hesitation. I could go on further but I'll end by saying they work hard to give the right medication weather it be for mental or physical health. They want you to be comfortable during your stay as much as possible. Everyone is very accessible to make sure your needs are met. There are some negative reviews left on Google, but in my experience this is one of the top mental health facilities in the state. Nothing in this world is perfect, they're only human afterall. But they will do everything in their power to get you well. Thanks Barnabas behavioral health. Don't mess around with your mental health. If you need help this is the place to be.

I find the Stepping Stones program to be very effective for mental health struggles. Personally, the inpatient stays were necessary & helped. You get out of things what you put into things. Thanks

This place needs to close. Putting a family member in here on someone elses false accusations and disregarding her kidney stone issues. Making her wait 2 hours to be transported to the hospital while in severe agony ,… throwing up and in excruciating pain. Not all people belong in this kind of facility. STAY AWAY!

I had a second voluntary patient stay from March 20th until April 1st, 2025 and it was the best stay I ever had, I learned so many ways to make things better for myself and my future independence, the food in the… cafeteria was great especially the cheeseburgers and French fries, I loved all the group sessions especially the music groups with Brianna, I just wish I could have seen and spoke to her one more time before I was discharged to tell her how special she is and was to me, thank you for helping me and I will never forget your love and kindness, I wish Brianna could have recorded herself singing for me because I love her voice and I miss you all so much and may God bless.

If I could give zero I would, the staff doesn’t know what the director does, I’m not sure the director knows what the staff does, nobody there seems to read through the charts and I know this because they are always… surprised to hear what the patient is in for when they finally call 6 days later to discharge! This has happened 3 times now and 2 of the times pess had to immediately come out and to go to another facility. Prematurely discharged with little to no correspondence with family

Horrific! Psychiatrist is mean and cruel to old people. My Mother was there 79 years old with some mental health issues. She expressed how horrible the food was and wanted a shower but was told she couldn’t because they… were short staff. She expressed the Psychiatrist would yell at her and tell her if she didn’t get up she was going to a nursing home. The last 2 days of her stay she was vomiting and had a fever. They put her in isolation and gave her 3 Covid tests that were all negative. Guess where she is today after being home for less than 24 hours? She is at Hackensack Meridian Hospital in Manahawkin with a serious Urinary Tract Infection and very lethargic. You and your staff should be ashamed of yourselves Barnabas. The only ones worth anything at this place were Patricia the Nurse, Nick the armed guard at the door, and the kind ladies at the front desk. I wouldn’t send my dog to you for mental health. Your idea of mentally helping people is twisted.
