What Medi-Cal plans cover addiction treatment?

Medi-Cal is delivered through managed care organizations that administer the benefit locally, among them Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal, CalOptima in Orange County and Central California Alliance for Health. Contra Costa Health Plan carries its own page too, each gathering the facilities that record that plan by name.

How do you pay for rehab in California if Medi-Cal won't cover it?

State-funded places are the alternative recorded on the larger part of facilities accepting Medi-Cal, with self pay noted at a similar rate. Does Medi-Cal Cover Rehab in California?

Yes. Medi-Cal covers drug and alcohol rehab in all 58 California counties, and the county behavioral health department, not the health plan, delivers it. A member looking for drug and alcohol rehab in Los Angeles asks Los Angeles County for treatment even if their card says L.A. Care, Health Net or Kaiser Permanente. The plan covers physical health and mild-to-moderate mental health care.

Medi-Cal and “Medical” are the same program: the Medicaid program as California runs it, run by the California Department of Health Care Services. California runs two versions of its rehab benefit. Most counties have joined the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System, known as DMC-ODS, which the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved in 2015 and reauthorized in December 2021.

Which California counties have the full Medi-Cal rehab benefit?

Most of them. Every large county, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Clara, Alameda and Sacramento, is in DMC-ODS, which brings the full continuum from detox to residential treatment. Seven North Coast and far-north counties run it regionally through Partnership HealthPlan of California.
