Sober Living Homes in California

Sober living homes in California are shared houses where residents agree to keep the home free of alcohol and drugs while they work, attend outpatient care or rebuild daily routines after treatment. A sober home provides housing and peer support. It does not provide clinical treatment, and California does not appear to run its own certification program for these homes.

The California listings on RehabSeekers.com come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and information that providers send in themselves. Before you call a house manager, you can narrow the search with filters for gender, medication policy, populations served and languages.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which California cities have sober living homes?

Pasadena, Escondido, Carlsbad, Paradise Valley and San Francisco are where sober living listings in California cluster, in that order. Each home sets its own house rules, fees and expected length of stay, so comparing listings in one of these places before moving in is worthwhile.

Large cities nearby include Los Angeles, Oceanside and Long Beach, so people living in or around those cities can weigh homes in the surrounding communities as well as listings within the city limits.

Rehab Centers in Escondidohttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/california/southern-california/escondido/
Does Medi-Cal cover sober living in California?

Some of the sober living homes in California record accepting Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal substance use disorder coverage runs through county-contracted Drug Medi-Cal providers and the county opt-in Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System rather than one list of plans. Asking the county program about recovery housing is a sensible first step.

Rehab Centers in California That Accept Medi-Calhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/california/medi-cal/
Which sober living homes in California are close to a river?

The Los Angeles River is the most-named river near California sober living homes, followed by the San Luis Rey River and the North Fork San Gabriel River. Nearly all of the sober living homes in California sit within 25 miles of a river, a median of about 10.4 miles from the nearest.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home, also called a recovery residence, is shared housing kept free of alcohol and drugs, while rehab is clinical treatment from licensed staff. In California, many residents combine a sober home with outpatient treatment or an intensive outpatient program, so the house provides the living space and treatment takes place elsewhere.

The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) licenses residential programs that provide alcohol or drug recovery or treatment services. Under Health and Safety Code 11834.015, those programs also need a DHCS Level of Care Designation or a certification based on criteria from the American Society of Addiction Medicine. People needing daily clinical care usually start with residential rehab in California.

Correctional halfway houses are different again. A corrections agency or a court decides who is placed there, while most sober home residents choose to move in. Residents of a sober home usually cover the rent themselves, so ask each house for its rate, what that covers, and its deposit and refund terms.

California does not appear to run a state certification for sober homes. Some houses hold certification through the state’s affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences, so ask which standard a home follows, how drug testing works, and whether residents taking buprenorphine or methadone are accepted.

Are sober living homes in California certified or regulated?

California does not appear to have a state certification or registration program for sober living homes, based on the state sources available for this page. The California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals, known as CCAPP, is the state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences. Certification for California homes runs through CCAPP, not through the national alliance directly. If a home says it meets national standards, ask which certification it holds, then contact CCAPP to check whether the home appears on its current list.

Counties in California arrange publicly funded alcohol and drug services, so ask your county program whether its housing referrals go only to certified homes. Certification is not a state license, and it does not mean a home is free of problems.

Levels of support you may see

National standards describe four levels of support. A home’s level tells you roughly how much staffing to expect.

LevelWhat to expect
I, peer-runResidents run the house together through house meetings, with no paid staff on site
II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident enforces written rules, and drug testing is common
III, supervisedPaid staff, a set schedule and life skills work
IV, service providerClinical services on site, usually through a licensed program, so the setting overlaps with treatment

How much does sober living cost in California, and who pays?

Residents usually pay the rent at a California sober home themselves, and no state source publishes typical prices. Ask each home for its weekly or monthly rate, what that rate includes, and its deposit and refund terms.

Health coverage is built around treatment, not rent. Before you assume Medi-Cal or a private plan will help with housing, ask the plan or your county program directly. If you are in a court program, ask the court team whether housing support is part of your plan. The court-ordered treatment listings show programs that work with courts. DHCS also runs an automated statewide non-emergency referral line at (800) 879-2772, which connects callers to their county alcohol and other drug program, and the department lists each county’s own access line.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Ask each California home these questions:

  • What are the written house rules, curfews and chore expectations?
  • How often is drug testing done, and who pays for it?
  • How long can residents stay?
  • What happens to rent already paid if you leave early?
  • What leads to discharge?
  • What does the home do after a return to use? Does it offer a referral, a safety plan, or only a move-out date?

Medication for opioid use disorder

Some sober homes in California accept residents who take buprenorphine or methadone, and some do not, so ask about medication policy before you sign anything. The listings include a medication-friendly filter. If you need a prescriber nearby, see Suboxone clinics and methadone clinics in California.

Safety and resident rights

Naloxone in the house matters because tolerance drops after a period without opioids, which makes a return to use more dangerous. The DHCS Naloxone Distribution Project gives free naloxone to eligible organizations, including sober living and recovery facilities. Ask whether the home keeps naloxone on hand.

The federal Fair Housing Act generally protects people in recovery who are not currently using illegal drugs, which limits how landlords and local rules can treat them. If you believe you faced housing discrimination, a local fair housing organization can explain how to file a complaint.

Where are California’s sober living listings, and how do you search them?

Most California sober living listings are in cities or towns. Of the mapped homes, 54 percent are in urban areas, 37 percent in towns and 8 percent in rural areas, at a median elevation of 215 feet. Ninety-five percent sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the Los Angeles River. Hollywood Burbank is the most common nearest airport, at a median distance of 10.7 miles. Pasadena is among the most frequent listing locations, and the far north, the Sierra and parts of the Central Valley have far fewer options.

To narrow your options, filter by gender, for example women’s programs, or by medication policy, populations served or language, including Spanish-speaking options. You can also browse all California treatment listings or read the national guide to sober living homes.
