Treatment Centers in California That Accept Aetna

Aetna covers drug and alcohol rehab in California through employer plans and Medicare Advantage, written in the state by Aetna Health of California Inc. Inpatient, residential and partial hospitalization stays need precertification under Aetna’s behavioral health list, while outpatient counseling and medications for addiction treatment run through the plan’s network.

Every program shown is taken from government treatment registers and California’s state licensing records, and accreditation from The Joint Commission or CARF appears on the listings that hold it. Aetna’s Medi-Cal and Covered California plans have both ended here, so programs in Sacramento, Oakland, Walnut Creek and San Diego are shown for employer and Medicare members.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Does Aetna Cover Rehab in California?

Yes. Aetna covers drug and alcohol rehab in California for members of its employer plans and its Medicare Advantage plans, the two lines Aetna still sells in the state. Substance use sits on Aetna’s list of conditions handled by its mental health benefits, and California drug and alcohol rehabs that take Aetna are listed below by city.

Aetna Health of California Inc. is the legal entity named for Aetna’s business here, and two products are sold almost nowhere else: the Aetna Value Network HMO (California and Nevada) and the HMO Deductible Plan (California only). Aetna reviews behavioral health care itself, and rehabs that accept Aetna in other states appear separately.

Does Aetna Run a Medi-Cal Plan in California?

No, not since January 1, 2024, when Aetna Better Health of California stopped serving Medi-Cal members in Sacramento and San Diego counties. Medi-Cal, which the California Department of Health Care Services administers, delivers rehab through each county’s behavioral health department, so former Aetna Better Health members reach treatment through the county line and a new Medi-Cal health plan.

Does Aetna Cover Inpatient Rehab in California?

Yes, when the plan’s benefit booklet includes it. Aetna counts residential treatment center stays and admissions to substance use disorder facilities as inpatient confinements, so inpatient rehab programs and residential treatment centers in California are covered once Aetna grants precertification. An Aetna Value Network HMO member must use a facility inside that network.

How long will Aetna pay for residential rehab in California?

Aetna’s precertification review decides it. Each residential stay is measured against the ASAM Criteria, Third Edition, which Aetna names as its standard for addiction services, and the stay continues while that review supports the level of care. Under federal parity rules, any limit an employer plan puts on rehab must match what it applies to similar medical stays.

Does Aetna need prior authorization for inpatient rehab in California?

Yes. Aetna’s national behavioral health precertification list, effective August 1, 2024 and still the one it links in 2026, names inpatient confinements, residential treatment and partial hospitalization. If the facility is outside Aetna’s network, arranging precertification falls to the patient. The list does not apply to Traditional Choice, indemnity or federal employee plans, and state law can override it.

Does Aetna Cover Detox in California?

Yes. Aetna covers medical detox that takes insurance in two forms: ambulatory detox with medication, listed in one 2026 Choice POS II booklet for a New York employer, and inpatient detox, which counts as an inpatient confinement and needs precertification. An older version of Aetna’s list says outpatient detox has not needed precertification since January 1, 2019.

Does Aetna Cover Outpatient Rehab in California?

Yes. Aetna covers outpatient rehab programs, office therapy and intensive outpatient programs with insurance, and intensive outpatient no longer appears on its precertification list. California is one of the states where Aetna lists in-person mental health care at MinuteClinic inside CVS locations, alongside CVS Virtual Care and Teladoc Health for video sessions.

Aetna requires precertification for partial hospitalization programs, the one outpatient level on its behavioral health list. The same New York employer booklet lists peer counseling from supervised peer support specialists, and Aetna says virtual appointments with counselors and psychiatrists are usually available within three days or less.

Does Aetna Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Aetna covers medications for addiction treatment in California through a pharmacy benefit run by CVS Caremark, its sister company inside CVS Health, and each plan has its own drug list. Aetna’s online medication search, sorted by plan year and plan name, shows where a drug sits, including tiers for naltrexone treatment with insurance.

Does Aetna cover Suboxone in California?

The answer turns on each Aetna formulary. A 2017 news report covered Aetna’s decision to end the prior authorization step for buprenorphine, the drug in Suboxone, on commercial coverage, after Cigna and Anthem had done so, and Suboxone treatment through insurance follows each plan’s formulary, which sets the tier and any quantity limit.

Does Aetna cover methadone in California?

Yes for Aetna Medicare Advantage members, since Medicare covers methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone with counseling through enrolled Opioid Treatment Programs. For employer plans, methadone clinic treatment follows the plan document, and federal parity rules require the same treatment limits that apply to comparable medical care.

Aetna Rehab Centers at Lake Tahoe, on the San Diego Coast and in the Sierra Foothills

Aetna’s California footprint changed most in five places: the four Covered California regions where its individual plans ended for 2026, and San Diego County, which its Medi-Cal plan left in 2024. Those areas include Lake Tahoe’s California shore, the North County beaches and the foothills below the Sierra National Forest.

Aetna rehab near Lake Tahoe ski areas

Lake Tahoe’s California shore sits in El Dorado and Placer counties, part of Covered California Region 3 with Sacramento and Yolo, where Aetna’s individual plans ended for 2026. Aetna members near rehabs near ski resorts around South Lake Tahoe programs and Tahoe City now hold Aetna through employers.

Aetna rehab near San Diego County beaches

North County beach towns such as Oceanside, Carlsbad and Encinitas belong to San Diego County, which Aetna Better Health of California left on January 1, 2024. Near rehab centers near beaches and Oceanside treatment options, Aetna coverage now comes through employers, and Medi-Cal care is authorized through the county’s combined access line, (888) 724-7240.

Aetna rehab in the Sierra National Forest foothills

Fresno, Kings and Madera counties form Covered California Region 11, the fourth region Aetna’s individual plans left for 2026. East of Fresno the Sierra National Forest climbs toward Shaver Lake and Huntington Lake, and Aetna members near rehabs near national forests there and Clovis rehab programs are covered through employer plans.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Aetna in California?

Browse the listings on this page. Each facility listed accepts Aetna and shows its levels of care and phone number, and the filters narrow California programs by city and by inpatient, detox or outpatient care. Rehabs accepting private insurance of every kind are grouped on a separate page.

For an Aetna member, the first admission step is precertification of a residential, inpatient or partial hospitalization stay: an in-network program files the request, while out of network the member files it. Aetna rehab in Sacramento and the capital region

Sacramento County lost both Aetna’s Medi-Cal and Covered California lines within two years: Aetna Better Health of California left Medi-Cal there on January 1, 2024, and Aetna’s Covered California plans in Region 3 ended for 2026. Sacramento’s Medi-Cal plans are now Anthem Blue Cross, Health Net, Molina and Kaiser, and employer members still reach treatment centers in Sacramento in network.

Aetna rehab in San Diego and the South Bay

San Diego County Medi-Cal members who left Aetna Better Health in 2024 now use Molina, Kaiser, Community Health Group or Blue Shield Promise. Aetna employer members keep the network for San Diego treatment programs and Chula Vista rehab centers, while county Medi-Cal rehab has had the full organized delivery benefit since July 1, 2018.

Aetna rehab in Oakland and Alameda County

Alameda County is Covered California Region 6, one of the four regions where Aetna’s individual plans ended for 2026, so Aetna coverage in Oakland, Berkeley and Hayward now comes through employers. Alameda’s Medi-Cal plans are Alameda Alliance for Health and Kaiser Permanente, and Aetna members search rehab programs in Oakland and Hayward treatment centers here.

Aetna rehab in Walnut Creek and Contra Costa County

Contra Costa County, Covered California Region 5, saw Aetna’s individual plans end for 2026 alongside Alameda’s, leaving carriers such as Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California and Kaiser Permanente. Aetna coverage there now comes through employers, Walnut Creek recovery programs appear in the listings, and Contra Costa Health Plan serves the county’s Medi-Cal members.

Can I use Aetna for rehab in a different state?

Yes, if the plan pays outside its network, as Open Choice PPO and Choice POS II do, since Aetna sells employer plans nationally. An Aetna HMO or EPO pays for care outside the network only in emergencies, and the Aetna Value Network HMO, sold only in California and Nevada, pays for network care alone.

How much does rehab cost with Aetna in California?

The cost depends on the plan: Aetna’s commercial business is mostly self-funded employer plans, where the employer writes the benefit design. Aetna plans usually charge a copay for office visits and coinsurance for inpatient care, and out-of-network providers can bill above Aetna’s recognized amount, with those charges outside the out-of-pocket maximum.

Aetna members in California who lose employer coverage have two public options: Covered California, where Aetna no longer sells plans, and Medi-Cal, whose adult income limit is 138 percent of the federal poverty level. Listings also show sliding scale rehab across Southern California treatment programs and Northern California rehab centers.
