About Inside Out Wellness and Advocacy – Perry
Inside Out Wellness and Advocacy operates from 410 12th Street in Perry. The site sits in Dallas County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Ames, Bayard and Boone. Iowa draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Residential treatment, intensive outpatient and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Treatment Services at Inside Out Wellness and Advocacy
Residential treatment, intensive outpatient and outpatient care run to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Trauma-specific services run alongside, which matters where the two are tangled together. Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen.

Inside Out Wellness and Advocacy Address, Location and Contact Information
The address is 410 12th Street, Perry, IA 50220, in Dallas County. The catchment reaches Ames, Bayard and Boone. Confirm what a program covers before traveling in, since the level of care listed is not always the level with capacity.
Telehealth appointments cover some contact where travel is difficult, which removes part of the journey for people further out. Ask what a first appointment involves and how long the current wait runs before making the trip. Waiting times vary with capacity, so call ahead rather than arriving unannounced.

This place never answers phone call at either location and when you call crisis line ther people there you can never understand or hear them it’s like they have hand me down headset or phones to talk to people. They… want to claim they want to help kids but can’t ever answer or return phone calls
Unfortunately the crisis hotline is terrible, 80% of the people who work on the hotline do not have the experience necessary to help someone having an actual mental health crisis at all. When I reached out to Melinda… Dennis the CEO to make a formal complaint she refused to call me or let me know who I could speak with in order to get something done about it. Several of the staff here have not even triaged mental health calls at all, simply said I'll call you back an hour later with no idea as to what's wrong with the caller. They've ignored voicemails to call back while people were in crisis. They've become hostile and angry when you don't take their suggested coping skills and literally said "well I don't know what else to tell you." None of them understand that talking to someone when you are dysregulated IS a coping skill in itself. Sadly this is the only service in Dallas County which leaves people with no help at all. Something needs to be done before their continued failures lead to serious and real harm to a caller. As its already lead to harm to callers via self harm after being treated so poorly that the person harmed themselves out of desperation.
They seem to act like they want to help at first it was great but after awhile it seemed like they started totally down to me and the other clients then when I stood up for myself I was the bad guy and got thrown out.… One staff even told me that no matter what since I wasn't staff ill always be wrong. If youre thinking about going here for transitional living ho somewhere else.
Saved my life...
Always make me stable again and help me through my chaos. Couldn't ask for a better crew!
Was very helpful at the lowest time in my life
The first big step I made toward recovery was by coming here. Everyone's needs are different, and sure, it's possible this place isn't for high-level care, as an actual hospital would be. This is likely where the low… ratings are coming from. I came here as a way to escape my tolerance/withdrawal from benzos, just by breaking the cycle of daily repetition. I couldn't do it at home by myself; it was going nowhere. I was paralyzed in fear. Here, I had to get up, cook for myself, socialize, attend daily therapy, and even get some fresh air in the yard. I could do none of that at home by myself. There's always someone to chat with, as well as get immediate help if the need arises. That sense of safety and 24/7 support is what allowed me to finally get a bit of a hold of myself, and find relief. Plenty of books to read, games to play, TV, etc. and always food to eat (nothing fancy, especially if you're familiar with delicious mental hospital food, but it got the job done). You can bring your own food too. Now, some improvements can absolutely be made... some employees are just flat-out exhausted. They have hearts of gold, and balls of steel. They definitely need more people during shifts, as one staff member can't run the whole place, especially if there are particularly unstable clients. Second, planned activities and group therapy should be a must. Otherwise, it's 5 days of totally free time (therapy optional). Regardless, thank you Inside Out. As hard as the trip was 1.5 hours to you from rural Iowa, it made a huge difference. A great place overall.
As with all places in Iowa, short staffed, high turnover, new manager, tired and burnt out employees. Kurt and Maria on stabilization side are angels, but others seem to spend more time chatting with each other and not… focusing as much on those here in "CRISIS". The counselor is a man working out of his home so you talk to him on a computer screen. Did not feel he was able to help me at all! And paused our session to go use the the bathroom at his house! Very unprofessional. Five day stay LOTS of intake paperwork!! Then they are trying to figure out discharge options. You are on your own as far as how to spend your days. As with most places in Central Iowa if you have a drug or addiction problem insurance and that state pays for long term care and treatment. I was assaulted not safe and ZERO options for a place! 5 days here and I will be on the street at almost 70 years of age!! NO RESOURSES for the huge amount needing help. A clean nice facility but much improvement can be made. AND a counselor told me to find this place in Perry IA.. It is in Woodward IA. Sad the lack of communication within all agencies and ALOT of wrong info on the interest 😕. DO better AND pay people what they deserve! CEO'S of all should take a pay CUT. And give their staff enough $$ to retain employees.
This place is not what I thought it would be. My daughter went there and stayed one night Monday. They overdosed her on propranolol which is a beta blocker. Very unsafe. They mixed up her propranolol and Hydroxyzine.… She complained of feeling weak. We didn’t realize the mistake until we picked her up and saw she was short on her propranolol and had extra of Hydroxyzine . She was only supposed to get 1/2 pill and was given two full pills. How unsafe! I called the night prior and was told they don’t have a nurse on duty. Please educate your staff of medication administration . Giving 4 times the dose of a beta blocker can hospitalize someone. I’m glad she’s okay.
What's a good crisis center for people that are out of options
This facility is absolutely horrible. The female and MALE staff were texting my daughters phone after she left (she was 16) my daughter was going to meet up with them. They were more than evil towards me when I was… there to see my daughter. I was upset and they threatened to ban me and telling my daughter what a horrible person I was when in fact it was the absolute other way around. SUPER WEIRD STAFF. I could go on and on but I'm going to go vomit now.
This place can safe your life if in a crisis. The staff are amazing, caring, and will jump over the moon to help you. When you get upset and make excuses, they give you the tough love to see the bigger picture. They… don't give up they make sure you are ok. They will sit and listen to you, play a game with you and support you in many ways. I gave them some hard times but they still made calls, did research, and made a game plan. These caring and compassion staff will do what it takes. If you're in fear of your life, have a hard time, or have a crisis, they are always there. Thank you to Dani, Tia and all other staff. They are in your corner even when you don't think so they are always in the back putting in the work. Thank you all amazing people.
The treatment that my wife experienced was not acceptable we are working with our attorney who is contacting the state Attorney General office he is making a formal request to have full investigation be done into this… facility. The practices that are performed at this facility are not ethical and it will be found out. Zero responsibility was taken and no action taken to resolve this situation. Dani was who I speak to this morning about this said situation and she was less then helpful in this situation and seemed to careless.
This was honestly one of the best places I have been to for my mental health. Day Staff were very supportive and they truly cared. Wish I could say the same for other places.
Great place! Great people
Inside out did a lot for me and was it frustrating at times, yes but worth it. The program is built well I recommend it
This place has been extremely helpful for me!
Absolutely a horrible place!!! At night they have mail staff only and on top of that the cameras in the hall to patients rooms are out of order. They schedule staff without a training to give meds out so people can’t… get their needed meds. Staff do nothing address feelings or concerns. If you are upset or struggling I was even told my Crisis is not as important as another. I was also told I can not return when I the one who was miss treated. They also failed the first night I got there to address my feelings. Each time I have had overwhelming feelings nobody was willing to help me navigate those and just let me discharge. No strings allowed now. Cant have a top the brush, hair brush or any thing for personal hygiene. Thats probably why one of the patients there smelt so bad it cleared the room. I was here when it was safe Harbor. It was an absolute incredible experience. The fact the staff are willing to discuss in front of patients their workplace drama and tell the patient how nothing is getting done or people are getting fired is really disruptive people already struggle. It’s like they WANT people to discharge without getting the help they need. They could care less if we unalive ourselves or not. As long as it fits their agenda. They treat their fav patients way better and provide them with more support than those who are showing signs of needing it. Patients here are suffering because of work place drama and gossip and the lack of training and understaffing are prohibiting proper standards of care. This place should be shut down (at least temporarily so staffing can be completed properly, resources can be made available , and at least one person can give meds at all times) I will be calling the state medical board, and filing a complaint with department of human services
