No soap or towels supplied in the restrooms for veterans. Dryers are not working either, except in the bathrooms that visitors might use. Lots of mushy food with unidentifiable things. Styrofoam cups (or any, for that… matter) were not supplied many days in the kitchen, along with other very basic necessities for living. Sleeping in the park would have been a step up. Place is filled with not vets, but people with ankle monitors. People screaming for no reason at 5am and throughout the day. Not recommended.
Extremely rude and unprofessional. Also downright disrespectful. I’ve heard staff say horrible things about and to the people who stay there.
I had to stay here for a night and it was probably one of the worst shelters I had to stay at, and I've stayed at Porchlight in Madison WI for Christ's sake. The woman at front desk who helped me register is… exceptionally rude and has no business working in this kind of position. She even snapped at me for crossing out a writing typo on a piece of paper. To this day, I still have PTSD from how this woman treat me. I don't know if it's exclusive to their overnight youth shelter, but it's by far the most patronizing, degrading shelter experience I've ever had the sheer misfortune to deal with. Clients aren't even allowed to speak to each other, we are all cramped in a small room, you have to walk through a gated area and be manually approved to use the bathroom, and you've got that woman supervising us on top of that. The food is pretty bad, but hey, that's standard shelter fare. The only positive I have with this place is how clean it is. And despite the culture shock of having to change into a set of pajamas provided by the shelter, I can't help but remind myself that some clients likely don't shower enough, so it's probably all for the best. Shame that everything else had to suck.
Honestly not bad. Will change my review if i change my mind But so far all my needs are met and the environment isnt an insane nightmare
I got turned away because they “ suspect” I am on drugs. No drug test or nothing. I was overwhelmed my son is 5 and has autism & adhd. and it’s a yt man that portrays to be a woman called Theresa & talks bad about black… women. It’s 80 degrees a black women walk in with a half shirt he gone say come in next time with a shirt 😒 then on top of that I was honest about my drinking problem. & it was held against me even after being told honesty get you far & they call it a drug problem I haven’t did drugs in years. But god has something better in store. This place has roaches. They don’t clean up after the last guest.
I don't know anything about this yet but my husband just got out of prison this morning and they sent him here atill an address here clears.I just hope he don't get in to trouble cause he don't know anything about… chicago and I am kinda scared. Just by looking at those feedback about the place is making me more worried and some saying good things but we dome to see what he say about it
Had to share a room with 2 other people... substandard food... laundry facilities.... building had cook country ankle monitoring parolees.... unsafe!! Oh...and had to carry toilet paper with me 24/7!!!
Nice shelter and Great IOP and OP programs
The black lady here is really rude and talks down on the youth like they are nothing. There’s bed bugs and youth are talked too as if they are just a number paying the bills. Upon your first time arriving the black lady… who checks you in the youth space is constantly making snotty remarks. She’s not helpful with helping you set up the weird fold up beds (half of them don’t even work) I pray for any youth that comes in here.
THE MENS UNITS BATHROOMS AND LAUNDRY ROOMS ARE OUT OF SERVICE. THE SHOWERS ARE DIRTY. THE SHEETS AND COVERS THEY PROVIDE YOU IS REALLY NASTY AND YELLOW. THE PILLOWS AS WELL. THE WATER FOUNTAINS ARE NONE WORKING. THE… BEDDING PADS ARE WORN OUT AND USED. AND DIRTY.
So, I take it the same woman who answers the phone for the, now shutdown men's residential location, has been working there for about 5 years? Has no one ever told her she needs a customer service class? She's very… rude. I'm aware of HIPAA laws..... and customer service. I get it isn't a customer service position, per say, but you still need proper manners when answering phones and de-escalation skills. This woman will just read off I cannot confirm or deny that individual blah blah blah..as loud as she can and over the callers voice and words etc. I am also listed in a resident's file as having a full release. Other people have been civil and nice at times, but this woman has no people skills whatsoever.
I been calling for rental assistance since last month, they transfer me but they never answer.
VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!! I've been calling for the past week trying to get assistance & information & no one has reached out to me about my case!! I've sent emails & left messages!! This company needs to be shut down… because clearly they are lazy and don't want to do their job!!! VERY UNPROFESSIONAL & unacceptable!!
Rudest people i ever met. Definitely not what they advertised! Safe Haven? Lol!
The majority of the day to day staff is beyond terrible and rude. Not sure how the hiring process is but the people are untrained and unprofessional even with the simplest of tasks. The bathrooms for residents are… unkept and dont even have hand soap for regular use. I understand its a shelter but with whatever funding they do receive from the government, city, state or whichever, one would think they would at least be able to hire the appropriate staff to handle managing the front desk for example, without mistreating and being rude to tenants and guests of the building. These are suppose to be the faces of the building upon entry and its a poor representation of what this building and organization is and should be.
This place needs to be shut down or re- staffed , very unprofessional, and they put residence lives in danger. I wish I knew who was running this place.. I also wish I knew who was answering the phone. Whoever she is… she really needs to be fired. She don’t want to be there at all, and I would like to help her with that. Someone please tell me who runs that place.
The gentleman I spoke to while unable to break HIPAA laws was very professional and helpful
Called this place shortly after 8:30am on 11/18/2025 to make a food donation and was hung up on 3 times by some woman answering the phones. When I called back, this person claimed she “didn’t really know” and suggested… I call back later. This place claims to help veterans and the homeless in the area, but based on this interaction and another review where a bunch of used clothes were turned away, it’s places like these that make it harder, not easier for people in need to receive what they need. If you have items that this place won’t take, consider the fridge and donation cabinet a few steps to the East of the Christy Webber Garden Center at 2833 W Chicago where items are always accepted 24/7.
I am truly grateful for A safehaven , and no I'm not being paid , coerced nor under duress. I APPRECIATE the quality of life that I am exposed to now as opposed to my life before safehaven , I would like to thank you… guys for all the assistance provided. Kevin Reid 4th flr
It looks like one of the best shelters ever it does. But everything that glitters AINT GOLD. There is only one case manager at the moment and her name is tameisha and she does not help everyone even when its an… emergency and i get it because its just her on weekdays helping people but sometimes i catch her and find her in the lunchroom just socializing when i told her many times the people next door lock our side of the bathroom she never unlocks it for us…another issue is that my toddler wasnt eating any of the food they make so i tried to bring food she eats nothing frozen of course just baby foods or baby snacks they wouldnt allow so she would starve most if the time. And they dont expect you to make mistakes and be human like of course someone is going to find you attractive…even the staffs flirt with eachother, the staffs flirt with the residents. But what i hated the most is that the police is there everyday making a scene and the case manager tameisha went against my religion when she was doen talking me like i was worthless she told me i had a weak mind and i told her god is going to get me through this she told me no god is not and mentioned mental health classes to me…and didnt expect me to be pissed off by that. I been harrassed by many of the female staffs!
For the rental assistance program , my landlord gave up on working with them . They kept saying our pictures sent were clear enough or kept asking for the same documents again and again. Just dragged on
What a horrible place.I just tried to donate a bunch of really nice women's clothing and children's clothing that was all lightly worn and my kids basically barely wore and I never wore and this place refused to take… "used" clothes or items even TOYS for kids???

I took GED classes in this building and volunteered a few times I resided in the Rogers park facility in 2012-2013 around the time Skip passed away . The staff was amazing , great organization .
I'm currently staying in the Roosevelt facility awaiting my housing to come through very soon. In my dealing with enteractions with both staff and residents it's a mixed bag On the veterans floor it's for the most part… ok but more support is needed most of the staff are ok. There have been a few incidents that staff could have handled much better. This morning it was 6 degrees outside and a person was trying to get in to warm up but staff and security just watched on and denied access safe haven has been designated as a warming center in even if the individual has had some bad pass with safe Haven it is not only immoral but illegal to allow that man to stand outside not dressed for the weather to suffer in 6° degree weather that is totally unacceptable in my opinion the two guards and staff members should be removed if not criminally charged with reckless endangerment
I was attacked by one of the fellow residents. They were supposed to help me find housing and no attempts were made while I was there whatsoever, while they were building a new facility right down the road for veterans… that I knew deep down they would never give me a chance to move into. They only help who they want to help ! In other words they discriminate.
I haven't been here but definitely life has been having twist and turns fore I would like to come in and seek some helpful resources.
