Medicaid Sober Living

Medicaid rarely pays rent in a recovery residence, but it often pays for the treatment attached to one. Homes on this page connect to Medicaid funded outpatient care, so counseling, medication management and case work continue while a resident lives in structured housing.

Funding rules differ by state and by managed care plan, and some homes charge program fees on top of rent. Ask what Medicaid covers, what the resident pays, and whether the house holds state or NARR certification. Compare the listings below before committing to a place.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Medicaid cover sober living?

Not the housing itself. SAMHSA states that Medicaid may reimburse providers for specific services offered in recovery house settings, such as medication management or case management, but does not directly pay for recovery housing. The rent and house fees come from the resident or another funding source.

A handful of states use 1115 waivers to fund housing-related supports, and treatment attached to a house is often paid for even when the bed is not.

Medicaid Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicaid/
Does Medicaid pay for sober living rent?

No, as a rule. NASHP states that Medicaid cannot pay for housing development or rent, with the exception of security deposits in some states, though it can pay for services that help enrollees find and keep housing. Room and board sits outside the benefit.

Colorado says CMS asked it to end Medicaid payment for housing interventions with room and board, and its short-term rental assistance reimbursement ends after December 31, 2026.

Sober Living Homeshttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/sober-living-homes/
What does Medicaid pay for if I live in a sober living home?

Your treatment rather than your bed: outpatient counseling, medication management, case management and, for opioid use disorder, medication. State plans must cover all FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder, so a resident keeps that coverage while paying rent separately.

More than four-fifths of states responding to KFF's 2022 survey cover peer support under Medicaid, which is a common part of recovery housing life.

Medicaid sober living describes the split between two bills. One is the room and board charge for a sober living home, the shared, alcohol- and drug-free house where a resident pays a weekly or monthly fee and follows house rules. The other is the treatment, medication and recovery support a resident uses while living there. Medicaid is built to pay the second bill and not the first.

That single distinction decides how this page differs from every other Medicaid level-of-care page. Residential treatment, withdrawal management and intensive outpatient care are clinical services a state Medicaid plan can cover outright. Recovery housing is not a treatment level at all, and the long-standing exclusion of room and board from Medicaid payment in residential settings is what keeps rent off the claim form. Government reporting states that recovery housing is not covered by most public or commercial health plans.

This guide covers what Medicaid does pay for while someone lives in recovery housing, which housing supports a handful of states added through demonstration waivers and what changed in March 2025, the four recovery residence levels, what a house fee runs, who funds the rent when Medicaid will not, how eligibility works for an adult in recovery, and how to find a house that works alongside Medicaid-paid care.
