About BMC – Martinsburg
BMC operates from 2500 Hospital Drive in Martinsburg. The site sits in Berkeley County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Berkeley Springs, Charles Town and Hedgesville. West Virginia draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Hospital inpatient care is delivered here. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves. Care offered spans more than one level, which means someone can move between them without changing provider.

Treatment Services at BMC
Hospital inpatient care runs to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Ask what happens at the end of the program as well as the beginning, since that is where plans usually thin out. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Old. Outdated. Employees are always rude . Always act like they are mad that you are even there . The absolute worst bed side manner. Nurses rude. Technicians are rude.
I want to thank the entire staff at Berkeley Medical Center for the excellent care I received after having a Hemorrhagic stroke. I am a teacher and actually suffered the stroke while in front of my students. It was one… of the scariest moments of my life. Fortunately, the school nurse and AP drove me to BMC. After a stint in the ER, I was moved to the ICU. My nurse, Joe, gave me hope and stayed nearby for most of the night. He even stayed beyond his 12-hour shift to make sure the transition went smoothly and moved me within the ICU so I was close to the main desk. I was in the right place, at the right time, and will forever be thankful to Joe, Chloe, Tyler and the many others who got me through. Joe - I am looking forward to the day we meet again in Walmart Buddy!
I have only met 2 medical professionals here that haven't given me medical trauma, and listened to me. Most I've met here disregard medical empathy, ignore anxiety disorders, or phobias in medical files. God forbid you… ask for versed or topical numbing agents to make their job easier, and yourself less stressed. I ended up in a state of opisthotonus and they kept barking orders at me to stop. How on earth am I supposed to stop an involuntary state of pure terror? I shouldn't be trying not to cry and hardcore dissociating every time I remember my surgical experience here. The memories keep looping and everything seems to be pointing to medical trauma. Shout out to that one ER nurse and the gyno who listened to me tho. Those women are absolute angels.
Bunch of ass esp billings.
I needed blood work done and a female in a higab took my blood. Treated me as an annoyance and ignored my request for a different blood draw point. She rooted around my elbow looking for a vein causing pain and a… hematoma then just walked away without treatment or explanation.
Was there 4 hubby he had large swollen foot..the very nice lady did ultrasound..they found.out skin infection cellutitis ..and prescribbed antibiotic..the doc , and all the people were great..got in quick..and the… coffee there was great..while waiting 4 hubbys tests..chocolate peppermint ..so good also and a hollor out at the kind people shuttleling, all the people to places they need..one lady was so kind ..she had a shuttle buddy wooden on her dash had made from chat 3..so neat ..and had a badge also..for the employees etc..gonna be great when all done with a ymca..finally bout time..its a great hospital..at least we think the employees and the hospital are gold tiered..we have nothing but wonderful experiences there..And are so thankful for all they do..
Went in for a swollen throat/tonsils after i had an allergic reaction to something i ate. Only professional people in this entire building are the front staff in the ER. I sat in a room for about 4 hours where i was… told nothing about what was going on. About an hour into my stay i had to use the bathroom which i had to use the “call button” for. It took about 40 minutes for a nurse to show up to unhook me so i can go to the bathroom. The woman on call was rude, and seemed a bit impatient. At the end of my stay i was getting irritated with nothing being done so i said “if they aren’t going to do anything or tell me anything then im leaving” in which case a nurse rudely told me to leave. My bill for SITTING THERE for 4 hours was almost $700. My insurance took off 25. You expect me to pay off a $600+ medical bill when you didn’t do anything to help? Absolute joke of a hospital.
I've been a patient in some the best hospitals in America: John's Hopkins, Sinai, Mercy. I elected to have serious cervical surgery performed at Berkeley County Medical Center because area renowned neurosurgeon Dr. John… Caruso is a neurosurgeon on staff. I'm totally satisfied with the surgeon, surgery, nurses, staff and everything else. Berkeley County Medical Center provided better care for me than any of the big city hospitals ever did. I bet the new renovations will make the hospital even better. In my opinion WVU health system should be very proud of Berkeley County Medical Center.
Had to take my wife there today to emergency room for internal pain . Had to wait 5 hours for test results to come back and talk to the doctor about them. We got contradictory information from the medical staff about… her condition that makes no sense. We are going to complain to the hospital administrator about all this Monday Though we live close to Martinsburg we will be going to Winchester or meritus hospitals from now on. I would n't take one of my cats to Berkeley medical center , I m serious!
On July 31, 2026 - my daughter gave birth to my grandson, 7lb 4oz. I want to praise student from WVJC, Natalie Grant, for her charisma, positive attitude, gentleness and care throughout a stressful process. You're the… type of nurse we need when a mother is in labor to not only support her but her family. I want to say thank you and I appreciate you sincerely. Keep up the good work.
Saturday we went in to emergency room from my boyfriend falling. He was in a lot of pain they took X-rays and completely missed a broken bone on his leg. Sent him home with nothing for pain. Until we could see a… orthopedic doctor who we couldn’t see until Tuesday to tell he will need surgery. I had to watch my boyfriend be in excruciating pain and not be able to do anything for him. Ive seen the X-rays and I truly don’t understand how they could have missed that or they just didn’t care and pass it on to the next doctor. Either way there are many other things I can say from my own persononal expiriances I have had but it wouldn’t change anthyning and that it unfortunately .
This is the worst hospital in the entire nation. Nurses don't care doctor's don't care. The place is filthy dirty. They don't care about you getting well or your loved ones. They also are dishonest and will lose your… personal belongings and refuse to replace them. Also the slowest emergency room department you will be there all day and night sitting and waiting to be seen.
I gave birth to my baby here. I’ll list all the things without writing a novel. He’s 1.5 now and healthy and I’m grateful but others may not be as fortunate with the lack of care and attention this hospital provider.… They called me in to induce me. Once induced they left me for 20+ hours to dilate. Horrible and painful. I beg them to help me. Nothing. My blood type was listed wrong in my chart. The one doctor on staff was entitled and rude until the older doctor clocked into work. He was kind but busy. They told me hospital was full and to go home after being induced and sitting there for so long. I refused because I was in too much pain. I called my insurance and my midwife looking for someone to advocate for me. I was crying to the staff that this was horrible and all wrong but they basically told me to suck it up cuz I’m not the center of the universe. Eventually they had no choice and baby was coming. Nurses using their phones during delivery. Discussing weekend plans while I’m giving birth. Food was inedible. I hated it. They stole a special precious memory that I will never get back or have the chance to redo. I will not the anesthesiologist was the highlight of my visit. Heed my warning and do not go here for anything serious or life threatening.
I was treated in the ED for a stroke. Ive not had much experience as far as hospital stays go but my time at Berkley and the carei received made me want to follow up with the specialists there vs my home town 4.5 hrs… away. The staff was caring and professional in the ICU.
Not a welcoming Emergency Room. They make you wait in waiting room no matter the emergency then have no space so put you in hallway to be treated. Poor quality if you ask me.
Came here for extreme nausea and stomach pain, ended up sitting in the waiting room with only 1 other person for an hour, then sat in a room with no relief for another hour. When a doctor finally came to see me, he… treated me very poorly and dismissively before leaving me still in pain for another hour. The nurse drew blood and had me give them a urine sample, but never tested the urine sample. As for the blood, my WBC was elevated, even remarked by the doctor, but apparently that wasn't cause for concern either as I waited 4 hours in that room before any medicine was given for my pain. The entire time I was sobbing and clutching my stomach, very visibly suffering, and yet I waited 4 hours for any relief, and my problem wasn't even resolved. I was sent home, still in lots of pain, with useless steroids that upset my stomach even more. 4 days later, I woke up with the same symptoms, but much worse. I also began to vomit uncontrollably and was taken to a different hospital. At this hospital, They took blood, a urine sample (that they actually tested), started me off with a GI cocktail (so did Berkeley) then sent me off for a CT scan. When the results came back, they discovered I had Cholecystitis and that I needed to have my gallbladder removed. Thankfully I had a wonderful team, and they made my stay an absolute dream, and did everything they could to keep me comfortable while I was under their care. Had Berkeley been just a fraction as attentive, they would have caught the same infection 4 days earlier and done something about it. Instead, they showed that they have no care for their patients, or their wellbeing so long as they get a check.
Terrible, slow, negligent. By the way they have a D rating on safety for hospitals on the internet this year.... Came here several times for issues related to pregnancy such as abdominal pain and alarming symptoms and… they would leave me to sit each time for hours without even triaging. Had to leave each time to go to Winchester or NOVA. Absolutely negligent and crazy. This hospital should be shut down. Also want to add an issue recently of when I came in for kidney stones (that i didnt knoe about yet but was having horrific abdominal and pelvic pain) in my third trimester. They wheeled me up to labor and delivery but then just left me outside of the ward in a wheelchair in some tiny waiting room that was stuffed with literally 5 adults and 7 children. They were running around screaming like animals and I was literally crying in agony in this room that was the size of a closet. I ended up just getting up and standing outside of the l and d door literally sobbing against the wall while nurses would come in and out and just look at me and leave like I was trash. After an hour they finally got me and brought me back to the room and did tests and only gave me iv tylenol..... once they knew it was my stones and kidneys were literally swelling from it they just had the doctor come in some guy who was so so rude and impersonal, he wouldn't even look me in the eyes. He basically said there's nothing they can do, no pain relief they can offer in pregnancy etc and just to get through it and walked out while I was trying to ask questions. They sent me home even though I was in agony and I immediately went right to Winchester medical center which actually treated me like a human. They immediately admitted me and set me up with opiods and full immediate pain relief and handled me with care. I am beyond in disbelief at this hospitals constant neglect in treatment. Also back in 2022 this hospital sent me home to die with severe sepsis 2 times in a row (the 2nd time literally not even re doing tests but just taking me back into a room screaming at me that it was just rhinovirus) until the 3rd day I went by ambulance c e with a 105 fever and the only reason they finally admitted me then was because of how horrific my bloodwork had gotten and my blood culture's came back positive. They left me overnight crying in the er room while the doctor treated me with disgust when I was showing anxiousness asking if I was going to die and just walking out looking at me like idk. They admitted me into the pediatric ward as an adult..... stuffed on a child size bed and ignored me the whole time I was in there. It was beyond traumatic and luckily I didnt die...... never come here. And the one childbirth I had here I ended up with a severe uterine infection from the dreadful care, a postpartum hemorrhage, and postpartum preeclampsia that they missed several times and sent me home to die with
Can someone tell me when it became standard practice when someone comes in with a 465 sugar reading why 1. They don’t run an a1c 2. Why they did not rerun his sugar after three hours and 4. Why out of precaution they… would not keep him overnight for observation. They wonder why their reviews are awful.
So I don't go to the hospital. Maybe once every 10 years. Yesterday I was there for an issue that had nothing to do with pain medicine or anything. They were very nice and accommodating until some man came in with a… questionnaire that they said was voluntary. I agreed to take it and the whole thing consisted of him listing every illegal drug known to man and I had to say yes or no if I've ever used the drug. I said yes to a lot but what they didn't ask me is when. When I did the drugs it was in the mid '80s when I was in high school. Not anything since then. But they asked about ever. After I answered that questionnaire, honestly, the care changed dramatically. I could not get out of there fast enough. Like even when they had to come in to do my release paperwork it was so quick and rude and they took out the needle from my arm for the fluids so quickly that I Will have a bruise for the next 2 months. I went into my pharmacy on the way home and my whole sweatshirt from my elbow down was soaked with blood. I didn't notice that until I got there. That shouldn't happen. It wouldn't have happened if I had told them no to all the drug questions on this random after the fact questionnaire. Questionnaire didn't ask anything else except for the list of drugs and whether I've ever done them before. I guess I should have lied since it was 40 years ago and pretended I never did it but I answered honestly to my own demise. The care shifted dramatically after that questionnaire. It kind of reminded me of when my husband's appendix burst and they wouldn't believe it that he was an excruciating pain and made him wait outside because he couldn't sit in a chair. Then they left him on a metal table for 6 hours while they investigated his feet for track marks. We don't look like drug addicts and we're not but they wasted all those hours of excruciating pain and he almost died because of it. When they finally got him into surgery, they learned his appendix had burst 9 hours earlier. It was awful. Our son that was maybe 4 years old was crying because he'd never seen his dad in this kind of pain and he couldn't get help and he was in the hospital. It was probably the worst day of our lives. He remained in the hospital for 14 days because he was so close to death and it was hit or miss and it was all because they sat there investigating for track marks for literally 6 to 7 hours before they took him into surgery to see why he was still screaming in pain. That's what this visit reminded me of and I'm scared because this is the hospital that's closest to my home. Now that we're getting older, I'm going to need them potentially. But they've already decided that I suck and don't deserve kind care just like they did to my husband. I know that they have a drug problem but when someone is In dying and excruciating pain. You can't discount that because you have an idea in your head. Based on nothing at all. There was not a single medical record of any kind of abuse but they still pretended for that whole entire day that this wasn't really happening and he must be faking. I can't even tell you how traumatic it was to go through that. If we had sued them over that event, we would have probably become rich people and definitely won that case. I didn't do it because he lived by the skin of his teeth. He lived because they finally took some action. If they had continued that crap for another hour he would have died. And this guy is a healthy man that in no way looks like a drug person. But that's what they thought. Apparently. At the time I didn't realize what the problem was. I couldn't understand why they weren't helping him. We didn't figure it out until It was all over and we reflected over the care he got when he showed up with a burst appendix. Even the people with the front desk were incredibly rude. I was begging them to call an ambulance from Winchester so we could get him some help It was horrific.
We got a Ambulance parked illegally in a fire lane. That's quite the hypocritical stance ladies. Way to lead by example so my wheelchaired mother has to go around you all.
Worst ran er i have ever seen, patient rooms always full, did traige in the er lobby waiting room after waiting hours after check in, makes the sick and injured keep walking back and forth to a tiny traige room… bloodwork, to see a nurse and to see a doctor then sent back to the er lobby waiting area, nurse tried to discharge fiance without him even being seen by the doctor after tests was ran to even tell him what was wrong or how to take care of it at home, if you have a choice do not come to this er
My husband and I were traveling to PA when we experienced a medical emergency. The nurses and doctors provided appropriate care and course of treatment. We appreciate the expertise of the medical staff.
If I could give less than, I would. Berkeley Medical Center is the worst hospital I’ve ever been to. Clearly the entire hospital staff (except check-in) isn’t walking in their purpose. They lack bedside manner, empathy,… compassion, understanding, and respect. They’re very dismissive and failed to listen to your concerns/complaints…just overall rude and disgusting. I only went there because I was in excruciating back pain and didn’t feel like driving to Winchester Medical Center.
I recently visited a relative at BMC, 5th floor, The smell was horrible. I thought I had entered a long term nursing home facility. Hospitals should not smell like that. It literally smelled like a bathroom that had not… been cleaned in a LONG time. Do better, BMC!!!
Took my one year old to the hospital due to low oxygen levels she was turning purple .. they really made us sit in a room for two hours not one doctor came in just all sitting out there laughing . We walked out and went… elsewhere. Avoid this place
