About Hilo Medical Center – Hilo
Hilo Medical Center operates from 1190 Waianuenue Avenue in Hilo. The site sits in Hawaii County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Pahoa, Papaikou and Paukaa. Hawaii draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Hospital inpatient care is delivered here. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves. Care offered spans more than one level, which means someone can move between them without changing provider.

Treatment Services at Hilo Medical Center
Hospital inpatient care runs to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Ask what happens at the end of the program as well as the beginning, since that is where plans usually thin out. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Hilo Medical Center Reviews and Ratings
Personal accounts of Hilo Medical Center sit in this section. Patterns across several reviews, such as repeated comments about communication or waiting times, are a better guide than any single account.
My husband, daughter and I have received a variety of services through Hilo Benioff over the past two years. We've all been to ER several times and Urgent Care once. My husband was diagnosed with cancer in the ER and… referred to specialists immediately. He's had overall good care through the Cancer Clinic, other than having a rotation of temporary oncologists. My daughter went to ER with a broken ankle and they xrayed and treated it immediately and she had surgery the next morning. I've engaged with numerous nurses, doctors, PA's, clinicians, specialists and administrative staff in regard to everyone's treatments. Overall, the care at Hilo Benioff has been very good to excellent. We are always treated with care and respect. And level of diagnostics and medical treatment is very good as well. I would say that all of the nurses and PA's are highly skilled while the doctors while good overall, a couple have been less than great. I think that's mostly because the hospital has a hard time recruiting permanent doctors and specialists and so they have a lot of traveling or temporary doctors and that care can be inconsistent. But overall I'm very pleased with Hilo Benioff and staff and I'm so very grateful to have such good medical services with a variety of departments and specialists in our island community. Mahalo nui loa Hilo Benioff!
DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU’RE A TOURIST!!! I visited Hilo Benioff Medical Center in November because I got sick on my vacation. They asked me to pay $120 to examine me and prescribe antibiotics. I payed the amount in full.… But they keep harassing me with letters saying that I still have to pay another $17 (for unspecified “professional charges”). Whatever that means. I refuse to get into a debate about money that I already payed. I have the bank statement that proves that I’ve paid the amount in full. I’m looking into filing a complaint for unnecessary harassment and bad business practices. BEWARE IF YOU ARE ON BIG ISLAND!!!
Ok here we go! The great "Benioff" hospital formerly the old Hilo hospital has come a long way! From a surgery I had to a follow up, the attitude, the help, the reliability and the flow was beautiful! But the… compassion, empathy and the willingness to make me feel better and the positive vibe kind "blew me away", in a great way! Go check them out yourself! From the ambulance ride to discharge ti prescriptions if I could go 10 stars, it would be done! Mahalo much and people get sick and go see!! Just joking on the get sick, God bless all!
Yuri night shift nurse for labor & delivery is so kind professional and detail oriented she made me feel taken care of and reassured until I was discharged to go home
I have a lot of clients with complicated medical issues so I deal with HMC regularly. It is the most unprofessional and incompetent staff/facility I have ever had the displeasure of engaging with. I urge anyone with the… option to bring a well educated patient advocate with them to all their appointments. You will be disrespected here at best, and subject to medical neglect/malpractice at worst.
We are long time Kama'aina and live up north near Kamuela. We usually go to North Hawaii Community Hospital for that reason. We drove an hour to go to the ER at Hilo Benioff for a special admin to the hospital. We have… been neglected and driven around this whole island for help with internal bleeding. No one helped us. Dr. Guzman is our Dr. at Hilo Benioff and is doing everything he can to help my partner's life. FINALLY. He is passionate and informative. Kind and is getting the job done!! All of the nurses and aides are very very kind (at NHCH they are not very kind to patients with memory problems). If I could give 10 stars I would!! Thank you!!
My experience was great. Went in to eliminate worries about a calf muscle injury. Because of redness and swelling, I wanted to rule out a possible DVT. Everyone was professional and kind, and I received the best… treatment. They made me feel valued and answered my questions. I don't remember all of their names,. but I think one was Arden ( spelling?) She made me feel better and made my day better. Amazing. Thank you to everyone who cared for me when I was there. She actually listened to me and really helped me. I can't thank you enough!
Staff is nice.
I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to the incredible anesthesiology team, my ENT surgeon and his staff, as well as the amazing hospital employees who cared for me throughout my recent surgeries and… recovery at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. From start to finish, the level of professionalism, compassion, teamwork, and urgency I experienced was truly exceptional. Every single person I encountered — from the doctors and nurses to the support staff and hospital employees — treated me with kindness, dignity, reassurance, and genuine care during one of the most difficult and vulnerable times in my life. My anesthesiologist and her team did an outstanding job helping me feel safe and comfortable before surgery, easing so much fear and anxiety. My ENT surgeon and his team were absolutely phenomenal, not only successfully treating the original issue, but responding immediately and skillfully when I experienced severe uncontrollable bleeding several days later. Their quick actions, calm demeanor, and expertise truly made a terrifying situation manageable. What stood out most was how well everyone worked together. There was such a strong sense of teamwork and communication throughout my care. Because of that, not only was my stress greatly reduced, but it also brought tremendous comfort and reassurance to my family members during a very scary time. In today’s world, exceptional healthcare experiences deserve to be recognized, and this was absolutely one of them. The compassion, attentiveness, and dedication shown by the staff at Hilo Hospital did not go unnoticed and will never be forgotten. Thank you all for the phenomenal care you provided me and for helping lessen the fear and concern carried by the people who love me most. Hilo Hospital is truly blessed to have such an extraordinary team serving our community. Mahalo nui loa to each and every one of you. ❤️
Had hernia repair surgery last week. The entire crew, from the nurse that placed my IV and her student nurse, Dr. Bochkarev, the surgery crew and recovery staff, including the one nurse that was retiring but stayed to… help, were all top notch. My top praises to them all.
lots of parking some covered.
Husband actually stayed this time and let the doctors take take of him and because we have small children and work I can’t make it to the hospital for days so I was grateful to be able to know what’s going on with my… husband while he was in there for a week.. doing much much better now
Two visits. Both to ER and then admitted for serious conditions. Staff and doctors were all caring and professional I won't hesitate to use this hospital again. Food service was uneven but better than most I've been in.
Going to Hilo medical is like signing your death letter they don’t do shit for you
Was admitted with possible stroke blood pressure 240/120. The nursing & Ambulance staff moved quickly and steadily to get my BP regulated. They get 5 stars. Attending Hospitalists 1 Star. 1 Star for Doctors because. 1.… Poor to minimal communication. I spent 5 mins with admitting Doctor who stated bluntly I had a brain aneurysm with NO explanation where, how it could affect me, or anything. 2nd Doctor spent only 5 mins to explain discharge. THATS IT! 2. The 2nd Doctor looked disinterested, barely talked, just handed me discharge papers. If it weren't for the Nursing staff I wouldn't know what was happening to me during my 3 day stay. I'm so disgusted because never in my 66 years of life, even in militarily hospitals, have I ever left more shaken and scared than when I entered. It's the ONLY hospital on the East Side and we need more Doctors who actually seem interested in their job. Btw, not one was a Local doctor, all mainland. We have no choice for how much we have to even pay on Medicare. I'm not encouraged about my upcoming treatment at all.
as someone from the mainland, for the area, it's not bad care. but in comparison to the better medical care you can receive on the mainland, it's not the best. the staff were all very nice, accommodating, and helpful. i… also went in an ambulance to Kona Community Hospital, and if i had to choose between the two, I would choose Hilo.
I was visiting family and started having alarming symptoms. Swelling in feet legs and left ear. Broken blood vessels and dizziness and chest pressure. Went to urgent care in Keaau and was sent to ER by them because of… my cardiac history and a BP of 187/97. Got to the ER they checked me in and took vitals and I waited two plus hours in the lobby before they brought me back. The nurses where super nice but the ER doctor was horrible! He came in asked if I was there because of my BP (which is now 200/120) because if so we do not treat BP in the ER and discharged me. With a BP that high I could have had a stroke or heart attack. I leave the island a week later to get back to Ohio and doctors here do testing to find 80% blockage in my artery and put in a stent. I am sure glad HBMC helped me...
"Unko Ray" I'm writing this letter for my brother. I'm sure you've heard this before " Don't go to Hilo ER" well let me tell you that the hospital had really changed for the better. My brother went into ER and was… quickly assessed, treated, and admitted under the care of Dr. Rhuland. There were many layers of doctors, nurse aid, nurses and specialty departments that gave GREAT bedside manners, but most importantly they expedited each order as it was explained to us clearly. This NEW feature app MyChart allowed me to track my brothers test results before the doctor came in. We (my brother and I) appreciate every wonderful staff. They ALL were very professional, caring, concerned, and most importantly FAST. Yes you go into ER, do your labs etc, and then wait. Please understand that Labs, xray, and results does take awhile, but what I really appreciate was the feedback, communication, and follow up status. The ER was "Pumping" busy, but the staff would pop their head in and ask if we were ok. He was admitted on too the second floor across ICU unit and it was different. More bright, warm, and just new. The second floor crew took care of my brother with compassion, patience, and really heard his concerns when he addressed it. We had a beautiful clergy woman come in to pray for us, the case worker that was on top of it on our treatment and stopped in to make sure our discharge was clear and complete. We noticed this busy joyful custodian that was so darn positive with a "go getum" attitude" She kept our room clean and we appreciated her. My brothers diet was a renal diet, therefore we expected a low salt bland diet. We were very pleased with the flavor of the food, variety, and the delivery upon request were met. Every single doctor who was there for my brother had really made an impact. Pushing away the old stigma of Hilo Hospital is definitely of the "OLD DAYS" I see new buildings being build, fresh ways of structure, painting furniture is very promising that this hospital rating will be more than 5+ What a great improvement. Keep up the great job and Thank you for the excellent care that my brother "Unko Ray" had received. Mahalo Nui, Unko Ray and Sister
icame in as victim of a violent crime. Everyone were great including the police who stayed with me. The medical staff kept me informed about what and why they were doing. It was serious so i espeially appreicated the… support. They were busy but very professional, informative and supportive.
Worst ER experience of my life as a patient. I've spent years in Healthcare and I've never seen such negligence. I was given medication and not a single staff member asked how it affected me or if the hurt or helped my… symptoms. The ER Dr never reviewed my chart before seeing me, spent 1 min in the room with me the entire 5 hrs I was in the er, and was going to discharge me without even speaking with me, and when I got upset, tried so gaslight me into believing I was being unreasonable, "of course" he was going to discharge me, but that was only after the nurse informed him I was really upset, but to him as long as he fairly sure it wasn't life threatening I should be ok. I left the hospital with no diagnosis, no medication, no discussion, and no care or caring from this hospital. They heavily hire locum doctors, physician groups, and traveling nurses who have no vested interest on the people of this island.. *addendum: tried reaching administration and was transferred to their complaint line that.... rings out, no way to leave a message, tried several times and gave up and left a message with reception that I would like a call back, and nothing. HMC needs to re-read the PATIENTS RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES.
We were treated very kindly, competently, and quickly. Our English isn't fluent, but with the help of translators, it worked out really well. Everyone was very helpful. The medication is having the desired effect.
No one wants to go to the ER, but here I am and it's not great... but the staff are efficient, courteous, and thorough making my visit as short and comfortable as it could have possibly been. Mahalo!
I am had an asthma attack at Kileaua Volcano on 11/08/2025 Hawaii Fire Department out of the Volcano Fire Department showed up and I was code 3 45 minutes to rapid response with asthma exacerbations...RN Rachel was my… rapid response RN.She took me to SPU floor where I was cared for with definitely my top 3 hospitaluzations...BSN RN Skylar, Karina, Karin, Chari, Justin, Nikki, Hannah (the student) CNA's Marilyn Monroe, Mariaia, Dalia...I had 3 major asthma exacerbations from the 9th-11th of November 2025. Everyone has so much compassion, integrity, great sense of humor, hard working...I really appreciate all the laughs on my healing journey from the sepsis I got and the asthma exacerbations...I got discharged on the 12th to HOPEservices Respite Medical Facility...Everyone deserves a daisy award and Sunshine Awards... You come to work 12 hours to help save lives and make people time as comfortable as you legally can...My roommate in 226 B...Robin was awesome too.

I visited this hospital in march.I live in canada. i fell on some lava rock and kneaded my knee cleaned out. Paid my hospital bill and continued on several months later. I get calls and emails that I owe them. Another… $2000 American I had no stitches, and it was just debriment of the cuts/scrapes. $600US was steep but not bad... but $2500 to $2600us Level 3. That's just Robbing people. I feel for those who do not have insurance. STAFF was super nice.
Called the nursing station to ask about a patient and the nurse on the line said he’s no longer on the floor with us he’s probably discharged. Called my brother multiple times when he finally picked up he said he’s… still in the room. SMH HMC!!!!! Then called patient advocacy to file a complaint turns out the nurse got the names mixed up and was talking about another patient. Why didn’t she double check his name and the fact that MY NAME IS ON HIS CHART?! Hilo medical center train the nurses that answer the phone better !!
Aloha!! This is the family of a patient who suddenly fell out while snorkeling at Richardson Beach around 12:00 on October 7 and fell into the water for about 15 minutes, cpred by the beach rescue team, came to the… hospital on an ambulance, stayed at er for 12 hours, and regained consciousness after 12 hours of treatment at icu. The hospital's system was also the best, and so many people sincerely helped us, Doctor Alexia McIntyre, Er nurse Kat, and Maddie, Henry who helped interpret Korean, Cindy, who helped with various administrative procedures (hotel reservations, flight changes) during the hectic process, Sheila, who was in charge of hospital expenses, a male nurse from Singapore who helped our father recover pleasantly at icu, and a tall female nurse who helped and smiled us a lot. I felt humanity and hope for the kind people who went beyond kindness. We must have had difficulty communicating because we are foreigners who are not good at English, but thank you so much for helping us as if it were our job. Thanks to this, my family will cherish a second life with my father. The Hilo Benaof Medical Center is the best hospital, and the teachers working in it were even more brilliant and beautiful people. I would like to express my feelings and gratitude so much that it is difficult to express in words. Mahalo~
