I went to Legacy as a client in May of 2012. I was out in the Utah wilderness with Mike, who's still a member of the team and many other wonderful guides. I had a profound experience, despite going at age 19, not being… ready for sobriety, and not seeing that I had a real problem. I was as pessimistic and wounded as a 19 year old could be. About 30-45 days in my perspective began shifting, I felt loved and seen by the team and I was accomplishing hard things for the first time in a while. For the next 10 years, I stayed in touch with Mike and other members of the team, they checked on me and followed up every now and then. I followed up with them. The time was meaningful and I grew close to them. In 2022 I started working in the addiction and behavioral health field for a long term program in Boulder Colorado. I now get to work with Mike and members of the Legacy team. Often it's Legacy guys who are graduating who are maybe coming to our sober living, but I occasionally get to chat with potential clients and their families who are considering Legacy as their starting point. I talk about my experience there - I give a 5 star review over the phone and in person - not just via Google. My mother was terrified to hold a boundary and send me to Legacy, and I was furious with her at the time for doing it. It didn't take that long until I thanked her from the bottom of my heart for having the strength to do so. Thank God she did not listen to what 19 year old Phil wanted to do! Thank you legacy for what you did for me and what you have done and continue to do for so many others.
Best decision I ever made. Being out in nature and having to overcome fears that you wouldnt experience in a normal rehab setting taught me a ton and gave me a different perspective on life & recovery. I went to 2… different places for treatment before Legacy and the people that work at Legacy care so much more. It was the hardest thing I’ve had to do, it definitely wasn’t easy. I wanted to leave everyday for a month but sticking through it benefited me so much and I grew to love all the badass stuff you get to do there. I have the most sobriety now since trying to get sober, most likely wouldn’t be the case if I didn’t go there
Choosing to enroll in a program like this is a significant financial and emotional commitment, and I hope my experience can help guide others facing the same decision. I waited to write this review until several months… after our son John completed his time at Legacy, since the real measure of a treatment center is how a child fares after discharge. There aren’t enough stars to rate Legacy, nor enough words to express how profoundly their treatment benefited John. Before Legacy, John was struggling—depressed, anxious, and lacking direction after high school graduation. He was caught up in computer and phone addiction, using marijuana, and eventually experiencing suicidal thoughts. Despite years in traditional therapy with caring counselors, nothing seemed to help. With the help of a consulting firm, we discovered Legacy. At 18, John had to make the decision himself. Initially, he resisted and was upset by the idea, convinced he could recover at home. Chris in admissions and Derek supported us, helping us communicate with John. During a particularly difficult period, we persuaded him to try Legacy. The wilderness portion was tough for him as he doesn't enjoy being outdoors, but the staff’s kindness convinced him to stay for the full three months. We visited John during the family weekend workshop two thirds of the way through his treatment, and saw remarkable progress—he was more patient, optimistic, and confident, discovering joy in small things and learning he could overcome fears. The staff was compassionate and informative, and the group activities, (run by Mike, Troy and Justin), went much deeper than traditional therapy. Brody’s caring attitude, along with his dog Nemo, made a lasting impact, and Amber, John’s counselor, worked tirelessly to equip us all with the tools for John’s lasting success. John returned home just before Thanksgiving. While we still take things one day at a time, we are amazed at his transformation. He’s regained his spark—earning praise at his new job, attending school with perfect attendance, working out daily, and independently managing his appointments. We’re beyond grateful to see his joyful self again. I hope our story offers encouragement to anyone considering Legacy for their loved one.
Legacy Outdoor Adventure markets itself as a place that helps people heal, but if you’re coming for mental health services, this is absolutely not the place. The program may be decent for addiction-only treatment, but… anything beyond that feels far outside their actual competence. Utah must have extremely weak regulations for who can call themselves a “therapist,” because the “therapy” here was some of the worst I’ve ever experienced. The therapists were unprofessional, dismissive, and completely unequipped to handle real mental-health struggles. Instead of feeling supported, I felt misunderstood, minimized, and in worse shape than when I arrived. I left early because the “care” was not just unhelpful — it was harmful. If I were in any position to report their conduct, I genuinely would. No one seeking real mental health treatment should have to go through what I experienced here. If you need genuine therapy, trauma support, or mental health stabilization, look somewhere else. This program is simply not built for it, no matter how they advertise themselves.
I had the opportunity to attend Juniper Canyon when I was struggling with addiction and mental health challenges, and it was truly a lifechanging experience. This program is unlike any traditional treatment center. It… pushed me in ways I had never experienced before, and because of that, I was able to face feelings and emotions that I had always managed to hide in other programs. Juniper Canyon created a safe and supportive environment where I could begin working through things that had been buried for a long time. Even though I wasn’t able to complete the entire program, the staff made sure I was cared for. They didn’t just let me go or leave me hanging they went above and beyond to transition me safely and lovingly into another program because of some personal things I was going through. They took the time and effort, even over several days, to make sure I got where I needed to be. I also continue to stay connected by showing up to alumni events, which have given me opportunities I never imagined like canyoneering, rock climbing, skiing, and building lifelong connections with amazing people after treatment. It was truly the beginning of a lifelong transition and recovery for me, and I am deeply grateful for what I learned and experienced at Juniper Canyon. It was one of the first places that truly challenged me while also showing me compassion and care. It was the stepping stone that I needed at that time
Juniper Canyon changed my life. I was a client 3 years ago; a girl who felt broken, with no purpose or direction in life, and no will to live. I found myself in the deserts and felt the magic of this program in every… fiber of my being. I love being alive and calling myself a child of this land. I owe it all to my guides, therapists, and all clinical staff. The impact was so great that I am now a guide walking with others in their process!
Legacy changed my life and helped me get to my purpose and passion in life. I reckoned if I had not found legacy I would probably be dead.
Legacy changed my life. It’s ran by amazing people who really care for the clients and have made it there mission to provide an amazing experience for people struggling with addiction and mental health. I have Been to… many treatment centers and legacy set me straight in an amazing way now I have a few years of sobriety and living an amazing life!
The program at Legacy is absolutely amazing and life transforming. The staff truly care and they persevere and use creative solutions for challenging clients like my son. The wilderness component was so healing. I think… they did it in a very balanced way. Approximately three nights a week they were at the cabin on campus. Approximately four nights per week they were out hiking and camping. For my son being off his cell phone for several months, really helped him reconnect with nature and with himself. My 19-year-old son came to Legacy as his third treatment program. In the first one he lasted two weeks and was asked to leave because of a verbal altercation. He went to another treatment program that was in a posh setting in Colorado. For my son it wasn’t a good fit because it didn’t have enough structure. (Of course- he loved it there- great food, comfy bed etc.)He was acting out and getting in trouble and he was asked to leave. When he first got to Legacy, he was not a fan of the outdoor part. But after being there several months, he told me it was really the right fit for him. The family weekend was so meaningful. When it was over, I cried tears of joy and hope for my son‘s future. I would very highly recommend Legacy, especially if your child is challenging.
This place changed my life!!! I came to Juniper canyon in February of 2022 absolutely broken and defeated. This place got me sober (and kept me sober) changed my entire perspective on life and what it means to be me,… and shaped me into the woman I am today. My most sacred and special moments were spent in Utah with these absolutely incredible people and I am forever grateful. I have a beautiful, fun and full life today that would not have been possible without Legacy.
This place is definitely one of the most amazing treatment centers The people there all of them the staff the students or peers and therapist are the best so thankful to have had the opportunity to go there
The love that this team has for their community, their team, and most importantly.. their clients, is admirable.
Legacy is definitely one of my happy places. Some of my favorite people are here. As a person in long term recovery I feel blessed to spend time with them and be a witness to the safe haven they have created for my… people. No one can love an addict back to life like they can. I would put my own kids here in a heartbeat. You will be safe, cared for and shown a new and happy life. What do you have to lose, except a second chance.
Legacy doesn't have the profound ethical/regulatory problems many wilderness therapy places do. When I went in 2017, it was run by good people. But, before enrolling, you might ask yourself to what degree "adventuring"… is an evidence-based treatment for addiction (the answer being that the research is sparse and not particularly promising) and to what degree backpacking the wilderness meaningfully relates to navigating life as a sober person. The majority of time spent at Legacy won't be working with a clinician; it'll be doing outdoor adventuring. If you like being outside... great! I had fun at Legacy. What Legacy didn't do was ask of me to meaningfully think about how I might live without substance use. A group of 6-10 dudes and 2 trail guides doesn't translate particularly well to the kind of milieu that most people encounter in the world. Add to the fact that Legacy's program for men is invested in a lot of (at best) dated ideas for masculinity and a lot of ideas borrowed (without context) from indigenous cultures and you end up with a program that really holds the potential to breed harmful ideas. The programming around the 12 steps is a good step, but the 12 steps still have far lower success rates than things like MAT or the Sinclair Method. When I was at Legacy, it was also notoriously hard to leave Legacy (it generally involved having to hike through the desert, being followed by staff members who would warn people in Loa that you "might be a felon," and being denied your phone and your wallet by staff members). While those rules were in place for good reasons, and while addiction treatment is complicated, there was always a subtle form of coercion belied by these methods. While I frequently felt alienated due to Legacy's gender dynamics. I did enjoy my time there. The real gems of the program were the trail guides; my conversations with them have, 5 years later, shaped my life for the better, even as my Legacy-assigned therapist was pretty useless (sorry, Troy. think more about how you interact with LGBTQ people). But... backpacking for three months would have been a lot cheaper if I didn't go through Legacy.
Lagacy is top notch! Their team is knowledgeable and very devoted. I'm lucky enough to know some of them personally and have witnessed the care and commitment. If you are considering this program for your loved one,… they will be in good hands.
I’m continually impressed with Legacy! They genuinely care about their clients and are dedicated and skilled at helping them overcome their challenges. As I’ve toured, worked with, and associated with Legacy and… graduates of their program, over the years, I appreciate the powerful work they’re doing and the authentic way they do it. It’s clear their approach is rooted in research and proven strategies and because they’re owner operated I think there’s an extra level of personal touch and quality of care they provide that stands out. They’re a real gem changing lives!
4.7 isn't high enough for Legacy. We live in the Northeast and VERY thoroughly researched wilderness treatment facilities before choosing one. Several, unaffiliated and trusted health professionals all pointed us in the… same direction - Legacy. So, with our expectations already sky high, Legacy has somehow managed to exceed them. Their operation is amazingly well run, but the real reason for their effectiveness is their people. Some of the best, most emotionally involved and committed therapy professionals you will find anywhere. I could go on and on, but simply put, this place is amazing. My only regret is that it's financially out of reach for so many who could be saved here, primarily because insurance companies have yet to adequately recognize the mental health crisis that is ravaging our younger generations. Hopefully this will change some day.
Legacy Outdoor Adventures is a phenomenal program for young men dealing with addiction, depression/anxiety, or other problems. I found the staff to be loving, caring, empathetic, and invested in the welfare of their… clients. My son has thrived in this program. He is now the son I knew before the drugs/alcohol and before the crippling depression/anxiety. I recommend this program to you without hesitancy. It has all the components in place to help your son overcome issues around substance abuse and poor mental health.
I would highly recommend Legacy Outdoor Adventures. I have experienced and witnessed the effectiveness of this program. Southern Utah landscape is spectacular. Nature at its beauty takes healing to a new level.
Simply put, Legacy saved our son's life! He went from a boy to a man through a constructive, loving, and accountable programing. EVERY SINGLE THING the Legacy team does with the men is intentional, and foundational in… the rebuilding of their lives. Words cannot describe my gratitude to the staff, up to and including Gil, the head of the program who met with me and my son when we were considering wilderness. For those looking, Legacy is the real deal, and was the best investment I could have ever made into my son's life! Remember that all wilderness therapy programs are NOT the same; Legacy stands in a tier all by itself!
A truly life-changing program. This is where I found my “home”. The therapy at juniper canyon is the gold standard. It was the most challenging yet beneficial programs I’ve ever done. The staff are the best people I've… ever met. I'm forever grateful. You and your loved ones will be too.
My son just completed this program and I cannot say enough good things about it. Top notch in all areas. My son went from being totally destructive, to having the most positive attitude imaginable. So much so, that when… he left after 3 months, he was extremely sad to leave his team and those working for the company. If you have the means to join this program, don't think twice, it's the best thing that you can ever do. To combine Wilderness with Therapy is amazing. Thank you so much Legacy...
Very thankful for my time at Juniper Canyon. The therapist, guides, and other staff care so much about every individual that goes through the program. They bring nature, spirituality, community, therapy, and family… together in a very beautiful and powerful way. I went only for mental health and I think more people need to know about adult wilderness therapy and that it isn't only for addiction. 90 days is a long time but looking back I needed the whole thing. Wilderness therapy doesn't have the best rep always especially adolescent but this program really shows the magic wilderness therapy can have. It definitely helps that a majority of clients (at least when I was there) choose to be there for themselves and wanted to recover. I would highly recommend this program. I know I read all the reviews and information before I went and I encourage if your in the same position to take the leap of faith and go for it. Your future self will thank you. If finances are a problem ask about the LOA fund and/or insurance. My insurance paid for almost all of it and thats the only way I was able to go.
Juniper Caynon literally saved my life! Wasn't expecting to be in the complete wilderness but I would never change it! On top of the amazing program the staff there is also amazing! I adored my therapist and drug… counselor! I highly recommend this program to anyone. They also help fund me not only to go there but to go to after care as well! Thank you so much for everything!
Absolutely amazing experience. Without the help from the staff and guides I don’t know how I would move forward in my life. Recommend if your thinking about it take that leap of faith.
Amazing program amazing people the best treatment and highly ethical
Some of the best days of my life took place in good ole Wayne County... I learned more there, than I did in high school! I miss it
I wouldn't trade my time at Legacy for anything. Recovery is really challenging for everyone involved, and Legacy is a place where people navigate those challenges skillfully and with compassion. I recently revisited… Legacy as a volunteer (I now have long term sobriety). The program has grown from where it was when I was client in 2012. There's a women's program now, a larger campus, better outdoor equipment for clients and some new ways of doing recovery. The core staff are really caring and skilled. The guides are amazing. I've seen and heard of how things go at other treatment programs, Legacy is different. The people at Legacy meet clients where they're at and help them to do their own work, balancing between gentleness and firmness. Beyond that, the land in Utah is incredible and the adventures at Legacy are really fun. My time at Legacy was life changing.
I have never been more proud to say that I have been somewhere, than Legacy. Legacy completely changed my life and my family's life. I am forever grateful for what this place did for me. Not just the medical staff but… also the field guides. Some of the most impact full people I have ever met in my life work at this place. I will always have a place in my heart for legacy and it makes my heart warm to see them opening their doors to more people. Giving new opportunities to lives and second chances to those who never thought they would make it. Thanks!
