How does a court order someone into treatment in Utah?

A Utah court can order treatment through sentencing, probation terms, a pretrial agreement or a problem-solving court, and each route has its own rules. Utah State Courts run adult drug courts in most districts, DUI courts for repeat offenders, juvenile drug courts, family dependency drug courts, mental health courts, and veterans drug courts in the Third and Fourth Districts. Every court type follows the ten Key Components and has its own certification checklist. The first Utah drug court opened in 1996. Terms and eligibility differ by court, so a defense attorney is the person to explain a specific offer.

DUI cases often carry a separate education requirement. PRIME For Life is the only DUI education curriculum the state allows. The course runs 16 hours over at least two days and is taught by agencies that hold a substance use treatment license. Ask whether the court ordered classes, treatment or both, and see DUI and DWI programs in Utah.

Civil commitment is a separate route from a criminal order. The Office of Substance Use and Mental Health describes Utah civil commitment in terms of severe mental illness and does not list substance use as a basis.
