A sober living home, also called a recovery residence, is shared housing that is free of alcohol and drugs, and unlike rehab it is not a treatment program. In Utah, residents pay rent, follow house rules and usually keep jobs or go to appointments during the day.

Clinical care such as counseling or medication happens elsewhere, often at outpatient programs in Utah or an intensive outpatient program. Utah licenses recovery residence services under rule R501-18 through its Office of Licensing, and a license is a state record rather than a quality rating.

Homes differ in how much support they give, from peer-run houses with no paid staff to settings with house managers, paid staff or on-site clinicians. Residents usually pay rent themselves, so request every charge in writing, and what the rent includes, before signing anything.

Are sober living homes in Utah licensed or certified?

Utah licenses recovery residence services under administrative rule R501-18. What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Questions for any Utah sober home should cover house rules and curfews, how often drug testing happens and who pays, length of stay, refunds if you leave early, discharge notice, and what happens after a return to use.

Discharge policy is a safety question as well as a house rule. After a return to use, tolerance is often lower, which raises overdose risk, so ask whether the home offers a referral and help planning a next step rather than a same-day exit.

Medication for opioid use disorder

Naloxone and resident rights

Ask whether the house keeps naloxone, the medication that reverses an opioid overdose. Utah’s statewide standing order, signed September 23, 2025, lets any Utah-licensed pharmacist dispense naloxone without a prescription.
