Went out of his way to make sure I had access to him if I needed after my surgery. Who does that these days? Dr. Seagle is great.

First visit. Everyone was personable, well-informed, and efficient. I don’t have inserts yet, but I got foot X-rays and scans for inserts in record time. It was a god experience.

LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE. I received tailors bunion surgery from doctor Dr. Toole on my right foot at the age of 16. 10 years later, I’m still dealing with the consequences of nerve pain, imbalance, uneven gate, and… compensation. To this day, when I take a careless step, or strike my foot on the ground in the wrong way when running, I get a punishing shock of nerve pain between my 4th and 5th metatarsal. For those interested, this is my story: I have wide feet and high arches, so a lot of conventional shoes are restrictive for me. When I was a teenager, I wore shoes that were too narrow in the toe box, resulting in me developing tailor's bunions on both feet. A tailor’s bunion happens when your toes are crammed together by a narrow shoe, resulting in the metatarsal (long bones of the foot) spreading apart, and the joint between the 5th metatarsal and pinky toe protruding and turning into a “bump”, which rubs against the shoe causing pain. Bunions are an unnatural consequence of tight footwear. While I know today that early-stage bunions can be remediated by wearing proper shoes, at the time, I was a naive 16-year old, and all I knew was that it had become too painful to put on my ski boots. Dr. Toole told me that surgery could solve it — and I want to be fair to Dr. Toole here — he asked me the right questions. He asked if I had tried other means of solving the problem, such as switching up my shoes. Truthfully, I hadn’t, but I was impatient, and wanted to solve the pain, so over the course of that 10-minute consultation, Dr. Toole, myself, and my mom decided that surgery would be the best solution. Little did I know that it would do far more harm than good. More than 6-months after my surgery, it was still extremely painful to put weight on the ball of my foot. This is where I started to develop a painful “shock” between my 4th and 5th metatarsal (if you’ve had nerve pain, you know the sensation). This lead me to develop a fear-pain response, which means I started “walking funny” to avoid this pain, changing my gait. I also started compensating for the underutilization of my right foot and calf by using my hip flexor, quadriceps, and lower back muscles to walk, resulting in chronic tightness in those muscles. I’ve always been active. I’ve served in the Army, run 2 marathons, and have been lifting weights for 8 years. I have been “white knuckling” my way through nerve pain and muscle tightness for a long time. Uneven muscle tightness leads me to struggle with asymmetry in lower-body strength training exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and lunges. The surgery also made my right foot more unstable, resulting in unwanted pronation and supination. Fear-pain response results in me being hesitant to drive the ball of my foot into the ground, resulting in less posterior chain activation, and difficulty with triple extension when running and jumping. To sum it up, this surgery resulted in significant maladaptive changes in the way my whole body moves. This is not an attack on Dr. Toole as an individual. This is a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of our western medical system. When you are a hammer, everything looks like a nail. When you are a surgeon, everything seems solvable via surgery. In my case, a naive 16-year old coming in to Dr. Toole’s office, I didn't understand that surgery can have longterm negative side effects. Here’s the bottom line: If you are under the age of 18 and you have bunions from wearing tight shoes, DO NOT get surgery. Surgery is inherently hit-or-miss, and should always be a last-resort. Had I worn minimalist-style wide toe box shoes, I would’ve saved myself over a decade of pain and discomfort. While the consequences of this surgery are frustrating, they are not debilitating, and I plan to run the St. George Marathon this October. This experience has made me very passionate about holistic health, and I love helping others when I can. If anyone is debating on whether or not they should get bunion surgery and wants my recommendations, reach out, I’ll be happy to help!
