About New Connections – Des Moines
New Connections operates from 1801 Hickman Road in Des Moines. The site sits in Polk County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Johnston, Prairie City and Saylorville. Iowa draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Treatment Services at New Connections
Partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient care run to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Trauma-specific services run alongside, which matters where the two are tangled together. Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen.

Just great
Worst experience I have ever had with medical professionals. They lied to me continuously and kept me there against my will five years ago and I still think about it every day
I couldn’t give it zero starts so I had to select one. I was admitted to the hospital with pancreatitis. After four days of a clear diet I was finally able to eat real food. After about a half hour they checked on me… and I was doing okay. Without any conversation of discharging me I started throwing up, I couldn’t walk. The nurse told me I couldn’t speak with the doctor that I needed to leave or they were calling security or the cops. I was very sick. The nurse was rude the entire time I was there. Any time I asked for something she was irritated. I believe she was telling the doctor I was fine although I was not and that’s how I was able to get released. I asked for a cup of ice and she might as well threw it at me. I wish I got her name, but I was sick. I ended up right back into the hospital. I wouldn’t recommend Broadlawns. Not to mention I had been there many times before with this same pain and after the fourth trip is when they did the proper testing to determine I had pancreatitis which is insanely painful. Mercy west takes good care of people. If you genuinely want help that is where you want to go. I also specifically said I did not want pain medication and next thing I know I was having fentynol pumped into my IV. I don’t believe all nursing staff operates this way because there were so many that were kind and helpful. My paperwork would have the nurses name. Unless she makes a habit of this, she knows who she is. The doctors should make sure their patients are good before they are released. I don’t believe that doctor if he had seen me would have released me. I threw up the entire way in the car after being there for four or five days. Over 24 hours in the ER. If I had more energy this would have been handled much differently. The nurse was ready for me to be gone. She was too good to be fetching crackers and ice chips for someone as sick as I was. This woman should not be a nurse. I have never written a review. This one had to be done. I hope the people she worked with put in some comments because they seemed pretty upset to be working with her. They apologized for her actions many times.
Walking in with a problem. Staff was fantastic from intake to discharge. Explained everything step by step.
The people at the counter are so rude, it's scary to watch my 3 kids go to eye appointments. If you don't like kids running around and playing, don't open for a children's clinic.
Amazing care and reassurance!
My original review was a bad experience at the E.R. but since then I have had some decent visits. This is about orthopedics. I wrecked my shoulder & they were able to fix it after DMOS & another hospital refused to fix… it. Left me with a shoulder broken in 15+ pieces in a sling for weeks. Broadlawns seemed like a god send. They got me in & fixed fast (2 plates & 11 screws). Recovery was proceeding until after my second fall. At that point when I came in for help I was told I was med seeking cuz x-rays were fine. I had to go to emergency room twice & only once given pain meds but apparently that was enough to convince them I was med seeking. I would rather not take meds at all. Have not seen a general doctor for 15 years because of that. Over medicating & not listening. The med seeking comments got thrown in my face everytime after that. Never did I ask for meds. All I asked for was for them to do their job & help me. The med seeking comments continued & was basically blown off with a medical jargon of deal with it & expect the pain you are still in recovery bs. X-rays looked good they were satisfied but I was not & neither was the E.R. doctors or my physical therapist who refused to keep seeing me because of lack of help. My last visit around December of 2025 I got told they were leaving & something about new doctors coming in. That was the last straw for me. I blew up & walked out. Have not been back & will be looking for a new orthopedic doctor. And btw my condition has been backsliding for months. Broadlawns has lost my trust & I will never return there as a patient. I hope anyone going there is getting decent care & not the crap I got. Just wanted to give a heads up. New doctors may be good but I have no idea. Take care folks. Hope your care was better than mine.
I took my dad to Broadlawns' Emergency, and Doctor Bethel (spell.?) and all other staff and nurses were very quick to help him and work on the issues. He had a stroke, and they were all helpful and so kind that I… believe that help him gain the strength to go home that night. Thank you to all of them.
This hospital needs a lot of improvements starting with retraining their staffs!! Bad attitude, disrespectful, rude and very unprofessional. I brought my mom here for the first time and never again
Went in for a sexual assault exam; ended up being held against my will for over 24 hours. They took my phone, my clothes and refused to give me more food despite me being starving beyond measure. I was treated like an… animal and forced to sleep on a mat in the hallway. When i tried to get any kind of information or help, i was spoken to like i had committed a crime. I felt like a circus animal in a cage. Aside from the already terrible sleeping situation; The staff repeatedly slammed the door and loudly conversated throughout the night; making it impossible to sleep. Absolutely terrible and horrific treatment. People wonder why so many abuse cases go un reported; THIS IS WHY
Imagine having surgery and the nurses immediately try and kick you out!!! even after verbally telling them you dont feel good and they reply how theres not that many nurses and how long will it be till your able to… leave!!!!!! highly don’t recommend coming here go else where!!!!
Incredible service in the ER! They helped me on one of my lowest and somewhat embarrassing moments ever, the service was so fast and polite and proficient and felt way better after my vist. Thank you so much
Would not prescribe the antibiotics necessary for a diagnosis they gave.
⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Review of Paul M’s Review Paul entered the ER with hip pain and was shocked—absolutely stunned—that the clinician wrote down **hip pain** as the presenting diagnosis. Apparently, when asked what hurt, Paul… expected the staff to ignore his answer, wheel in every imaging machine in the building, and begin a full-body archaeological survey. No X-ray. No MRI. No CT scan. Not even a ceremonial ultrasound for morale. Just questions, answers, and what Paul dismissively calls a “medical examination,” as though history-taking is merely the warm-up act before the hospital activates the giant glowing scanner. To be fair, not every painful hip requires three different imaging studies. Emergency clinicians usually decide whether testing is necessary based on symptoms, examination findings, injury history, and warning signs. But Paul appears to prefer the comprehensive package: radiation, magnets, contrast dye, and perhaps a commemorative photo of the hip. Then the review changes genres completely. A bloodied patient was wheeled past under police supervision, possibly restrained, and the building allegedly “smelled like death.” Suddenly, Paul’s disappointing hip evaluation becomes the opening scene of a supernatural crime thriller. The phrase **“an eerie feeling of misconduct engulfs this clinic”** is especially magnificent. Not a specific act of misconduct. Not a documented error. Just an ominous atmosphere drifting through the hallways like medical fog. **Final rating: 4/5—limited clinical evidence, unlimited dramatic tension, and a masterful transformation of an ER visit into an episode of *Law & Order: Haunted Orthopedics Unit*.**
My dad passed away 74 days ago at Broadlawns, and after trying to call over and over, and getting zero responses for the majority of the calls. You answered one time to tell my younger brother and I that you had zero… paperwork that he was even there in the ICU. This place is very unprofessional. They don’t return calls like they say they would.
I cant remeber my nurses names but i recieved wonderful care from the nurses dr's and tec's. I can't complain about anything. The er staff was great and once i was admitted and in a room all the staff was fantastic. I… recieved great care. They went above and beyond for me.
Staff is rude and unfriendly. If you are a person of color go somewhere else they will ignore your pain and avoid doing their job
Been here for 2 of my pregnancies. At most appointments I wait over 30 minutes past my appt time to even see a nurse. Today I went in to go to my ps h appointment. I cannot get a script without an apppintment. And my… appointment was at 11:30, by noon they still weren’t finished with their last client. I work over 60 hours a week and because I am not a doctor my time isn’t important, now if I WERE TO BE just 15 minutes late, I don’t have an appointment. But you can take all the time
Friendly and professional. Never a long wait. They are caring and I feel safe when I am there. The doctor's and nurses are great 👍
Horrible experience here. I was constantly ignored when asking questions about pregnancy. Im glad I walked out.
was admitted a while ago and I'm pretty sure my review was removed. come here if you want to be mistreated! the nurses were rude, only one was nice, and they were mean to a man with no hands there. he wanted help… eating, and they refused. he asked for the time, and the lady behind the desk said "time for you to get a watch" which is actually insane considering he doesn't have wrists. worst psychiatric facility, i feel absolutely horrible for the other patients there and i hope they can get better treatment. no staff took any responsibility for discharge work either, had to do it all myself when they said they would take care of it. DO NOT LET ANYONE HERE AGAIN!
I've tried to give Broadlawns a chance... DOZENS of times. The main campus is only a few minutes from my house and is the most convenient to get to in the metro. However, they consistently have bad policies and terrible… service and attitude toward patients. My care has left a lot to be desired every single time, at every single clinic. I have a primary care provider who I have been unable to see for years because I always get passed off to a PA who writes off my concerns and doesn't look at the bigger picture. I wish I could say otherwise but I absolutely hate this hospital.
Overall I've had good service from my practitioner. I mainly go to the pain management clinic. Megan is great! Very professional and easy to talk to. A few years ago, I had physical therapy there with I think it was… Chris, not real sure but he was easy to work with. The only thing that I really don't like is how far it is. Now, I have mobility issues and know I wouldn't be able to walk all that way, so I choose to go elsewhere. Another issue I had was with one of the doctors at the Cityville clinic. He kept on insisting that I was faking my breathing problems, because he didn't understand what I was trying to say. They put me in a room, and I waited for 2 hours, all while having a difficult time breathing and on top of that, I started to have a panic attack. I had to call my boyfriend that was waiting outside in the car to bring me a rescue inhaler and my anxiety medication. After I calmed down a bit, I told the nurse I was leaving. I even think the doctor claimed I was only there at the clinic to get meds. He claimed I was showing signs of med seeking behavior. Uh-huh, I call BS, NEVER! I HAVE NEVER sought out medication from an Urgent Care Clinic or an ER because of a habit. All I know is, I think that was the last time I went to that clinic. Also, the Dental Clinic - Who has the time to sit at the dentist for a "wish you the best of luck-cattle call" to see if you make it on the magical list to be seen that morning/day? Absolutely ridiculous! Come on- can't you do better than that? But as I started out with for the most part, I've had good experiences.
I wouldn’t send my dog to this hospital. The care I got on the unit was poor at best. I was told they were too busy to answer my call light. They didn’t feed me for almost 24 hrs.. when it was time to leave they wheeled… me to pharmacy and told me to walk around the building to leave. White was 16,000 when I left and they sent me home with no antibiotics. They blew out 2 iv’s in my arms. I could go on and I was only there 3 days! Protect yourself ppl. County hospitals do treat you differently. I found out the hard way. Don’t let this happen to your loved one! I went in through ER with kidney stones had CaT scan and it still took 3 days to get a stint. Beware ppl!
everyone was great and quick
