About Powell Chemical Dependency Program – Des Moines

Powell Chemical Dependency Program operates from 700 East University Avenue in Des Moines. The site sits in Polk County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Altoona, Pleasant Hill and Prairie City. Distance matters here, and the nearest option is not always the one that fits.

Residential treatment, intensive outpatient and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside medication-assisted treatment. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Treatment Services at Powell Chemical Dependency Program

Residential treatment, intensive outpatient and outpatient care run to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Residential here is short-term, which makes what follows discharge the more important question. Buprenorphine and naltrexone are available and paired with counseling rather than prescribed alone. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen.

Powell Chemical Dependency Program Address, Location and Contact Information

The address is 700 East University Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50316, in Polk County. The catchment reaches Altoona, Pleasant Hill and Prairie City. Confirm what a program covers before traveling in, since the level of care listed is not always the level with capacity.

Ask what a first appointment involves and how long the current wait runs before making the trip. Opening hours shift with staffing, and an evening slot one month may not exist the next. Waiting times vary with capacity, so call ahead rather than arriving unannounced.

Powell saved my life. Was there during Christmas of 2024 and it was the best thing I could’ve ever done for myself. Amazing 24/7 nurse staff that literally saved my life in the middle of the night. An amazing counselor… team, men and women’s therapists that were actually some of the easiest therapists I’ve ever gotten to talk to. Couldn’t recommend a better place to help you recover. And honestly, the people giving one star reviews and such are people that do not want to recover. This place is not a hotel or a spa that’s gonna rub your feet through the process. You are going to be sober 100% if you do what they tell you and that’s that. When I was there I would see people constantly go up to ER (needed) and come back a week later looking so much healthier and active. Never ever ever would I imagine Powell to turn people away unless they were completely full or even recommend someone to go somewhere else. I said it already but I’ll say it again, these people did not want to get sober, period.

The staff at Powell are the kindest, most caring and attentive people. Matt takes an interest in every patient. The councilors are available anytime to talk. The facility is clean and quiet. AA and NA meetings are… attended daily with small group and community groups for healing and therapeutic purposes. Each patient is an individual and many small focus groups are held to give more pointed treatment. Inpatient treatment is compassionate and still individualized. Outpatient and Continuing Care keep patients focused and recovery driven. I am grateful for my experience and recovery is within your grasp.

I think they used to be pretty reputable, but both myself and my son tried calling them this past May 2026 to set up an appointment for an assessment, left messages and never heard back from anyone. My son ended up… going to Thrive in Iowa City. If you are too busy to even return a call and you are in the business of helping people, maybe you need to hire more people or get out of the business. I heard they have cut their In-Patient program to just 15 days. That is way short of the recommendation.

I’ve unfortunately been to 9 inpatient treatments in Iowa and Hazelden in Minnesota. Powell is easily the best one in Iowa and their programming and staff are right on par with Hazelden. Which is one of the best (maybe… the best) treatment in the USA. I highly recommend Powell if you or a loved one is serious about getting sober. They know what it takes to get sober and more importantly what to do to stay sober! 5 ⭐️

I had a horrible experience at Powell. 20 minutes into my appointment I was told they couldn't help me because of a mediation I take and would not discontinue, which is prescribed by my doctor. They walked me out and… still charged me $200 without any help. I called the Program Director after receiving my bill and he never returned my call. The billing department manager was so rude and insisted I pay for a service I did not receive. They did admit they broke their own protocol on asking for medications prior to my appointment. They were still unwilling to make it right. I do not suggest using their services! To speak for my one star the receptionist was nice.

I’d been at Powell for a month and a half, they wanted to send me to a different place in another state and when they place never reached out to me after sending in the paperwork for it. They kicked me out because they… didn’t believe that I never heard from them

I didn’t go there, my fiancé did. They made her turn her phone in so when I was clinically dead for 3 minutes after a car wreck The cops couldn’t get in touch with her. So they treat adults like children. Screw these… people.
