Rehabs That Take STAR Kids

STAR Kids is a Texas Medicaid managed care program for children and young adults aged 20 and under who have disabilities. Members get coverage through a STAR Kids health plan chosen in their service area, and benefits can include drug and alcohol treatment for young people. What applies depends on the health plan, network and level of care, and some services need approval first.Texas centers listed here name STAR Kids on their own websites. Before admission, a parent or guardian should ask the facility and the plan about benefits, network status, prior approval and any cost, and whether a service coordinator can help.

STAR Kids is the Texas Medicaid managed care program for children and young adults 20 and younger who have a disability. It is run by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, which contracts with health plans to deliver the benefit, so the coverage a family actually uses comes from the plan printed on the Medicaid card rather than from a company called STAR Kids. Substance use disorder treatment and mental health care sit inside that benefit.

The distinction that decides this page is age combined with disability. STAR is the main Texas Medicaid managed care program for low-income children, pregnant women and families, STAR+PLUS serves adults who have disabilities or are 65 or older, and STAR Health is the foster care program. STAR Kids covers the group 20 and younger with disabilities, and enrollment is mandatory for the waiver and Supplemental Security Income groups it names. Because the member is a child or a young adult, the age floors written into the medication rules and the service coordination attached to the program change what treatment looks like.

This guide covers who qualifies for STAR Kids, which health plans hold it in which Texas service areas, what Texas Medicaid pays for in substance use disorder treatment and for how long, the counseling and residential limits, the prior authorization rules the plans publish, what a member pays, how STAR Kids differs from the other STAR programs, and how a family locates a program that is in the right plan’s network.
