UniCare Commercial is the employer group side of UniCare: small business medical plans sold alongside vision, life and disability coverage and an employee assistance program. The footer of unicare.com now states that the coverage is provided by Wellpoint Life and Health Insurance Company, and the site itself says the Medicaid line is now provided by Wellpoint and that individual Medicare plans are no longer offered. No individual or marketplace product was found under the UniCare name at all.

That renaming is the distinction this page turns on. Anyone holding an older UniCare card needs to know which company answers the phone today, and for the two lines that carried most of the brand’s members the answer is Wellpoint: the Massachusetts public-employee plans took that name on July 1, 2024 and the West Virginia Medicaid plan around January 1, 2025. The parent behind both names is Elevance Health, which was called Anthem, Inc. until June 2022.

This guide covers which of the brand’s lines are now Wellpoint and what stayed the same through the change, who underwrites the employer group plans and who owns the name, which states and plan lines the brand reaches, what the published handbooks list for substance use treatment and who reviews a request, what a member pays, and how to find a program that takes the card.
