About Osawatomie State Hospital – Osawatomie
Osawatomie State Hospital operates from 500 State Hospital Drive in Osawatomie. The site sits in Miami County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Garnett, Ottawa and Paola. Kansas draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Hospital inpatient care is delivered here. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves. Care offered spans more than one level, which means someone can move between them without changing provider.

Hospital inpatient care runs to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Ask what happens at the end of the program as well as the beginning, since that is where plans usually thin out. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Osawatomie State Hospital Reviews and Ratings
Many treatment programs look similar on a list of services. Reviews of Osawatomie State Hospital show how those services were experienced by patients in Osawatomie.
Accounts from family members are worth reading too, since they often describe communication and visiting in more detail.
They hired someone i have/had a restraining order on. What in the world is someone with a restraining order working in a place I was placed under care for, for 2 years.
this was one of if not the most traumatic experiences of my life. i was admitted during an extreme psychotic episode after being arrested. i genuinely did not know where i was, what was real, or what wasn’t. i didn’t… even know that i was in police custody. i needed a safe, calm environment and treatment that would help stabilize me. instead, my experience here made my delusions and fear significantly worse. sleep felt impossible. staff were often loud late at night in the hallways, and there seemed to be very little consideration for patients trying to rest. when they would check on you during the night, sometimes they would genuinely just leave my door open letting all the light in the hallway in. even after asked multiple times for it to be closed. i was completely ignored. when you are already mentally unstable and exhausted, constant interruptions and lack of sleep can make everything feel even more unbearable. i also felt like many staff members spoke to me as if i had the capacity of a small child instead of a 23-year-old adult going through a severe psychiatric crisis. there were a few genuinely kind and compassionate staff members, and i still remember them fondly because they stood out so much — but unfortunately they felt like the exception rather than the rule. the medications i was put on caused severe side effects that i repeatedly tried to communicate. i experienced extreme exhaustion, felt like i couldn’t keep my eyes open, pain throughout my body, inability to sleep despite being exhausted, and difficulty moving normally. at times i felt like i couldn’t even lift my feet properly and became scared something was seriously wrong. i felt like i was being dismissed instead of taken seriously. i had to keep insisting that this was not normal for me and that i wasn’t exaggerating. what was especially upsetting is that i still felt deeply psychotic despite being heavily medicated. from my perspective as a patient, it felt like medications kept being added rather than anyone stepping back to reconsider whether what i was taking was helping or making things worse. the environment itself felt cold, chaotic, and dehumanizing. i left feeling more traumatized than helped. the food was also extremely poor quality. i understand psychiatric hospitals treat people in very difficult situations and i know staff work under pressure, but this experience made me feel scared, ignored, and less human during one of the worst moments of my life. i would not want a loved one of mine treated the way i felt treated here. i would give zero stars if i could.
my brother stayed at this hospital, another patient tried to sexually assault him in the bathroom staff didn't do anything my brother told me nothing but horror stories about this place
Great Job with assisting to help bring my son home! The staff were helpful and accommodating to make sure he was prepared. Very much appreciated!
I was sent here for standing my ground against the corrupt processes at Adevent Health in Octber 2025. WHat happened during my stay here to myself and what I witnessed to people suffering is not care or help. I will be… more detailed in my update. But I will say things need to change. The staff treats everyone like they are the same out of their perception from some of what they've experienced in the past. The only people you Ever have contact with are the tech's many of whom have more empathy, care and ability to read a room and the people they serve. The therapist and psychaiatrist speak with you maybe 3 time and less than 5 minutes, out of the 5 days out of the 8 days I was there, Friday the 24th - Friday the 31st. How can you adequately asses and address any patient in that span of time. They go off of hearsay instead of a scientific approach. They do not follow the scheduled fresh air breaks or anything for that matter. It is shameful what is allowed to happen all the while those in charge turn a blind eye and pretend they do not see.
Its haunted place alot of evil people sick demented people have lived and died there . My father my grandmother and I have all been there ithas a macabre beauty to it
My twenty year old is admitted to this mental facility. I'm during a daily wellness check on my grandchild. I'm not receiving any calls back from Dr. Walker nor the nurses. Thank you for all the comments. I know what… and who I'm dealing with.
I eat any food so I like it.
I got involuntarily committed in 2012 because my mom said I had made comments to her that could be construed as suicidal ideation and I was deep in stimulant-induced drug psychosis. I probably had some sort of sepsis… when I was admitted due to IV drug use. I was horribly ill for much of the stay; going through withdrawal from opioids and I had a pretty high fever and severe body aches from the sepsis. It took a lot whining and begging for them to take me to the ER. I got some IV antibiotics and a script of oral keflex and they sent me on my way. It took a lot of playing their games (shout out to the old lady patient that coached me on what to say in the meetings with the doctors) and saying what they wanted to hear to get them to start talking about discharging me. I started to feel a little better, and after 11 days, they finally let me out. Within about a week I had to be life flighted due to the sepsis coming back and permanently damaging my heart. I have a pretty normal life now but I do live with a slight disability from the heart damage. I take responsibility for the choices that I made and I realize I brought a lot of this on myself, but I can't help but think that my outcome may have been a little different if the medical staff had done a better job at intervening when I was admitted to Osawatomie State Hospital with obvious sepsis. I will not live to an old age like my grandparents and parents. I just want to mention that this place is a literal hellish nightmare world. Even if I was in better condition during my stay, you're dealing with patients fighting and pooping in dresser drawers and yelling at staff and each other. The food is bad and they have no problem letting you go hungry. If you're in pain or can't sleep, you have to argue with them for hours to get a Tylenol or a sedative. I think I slept for maybe 45 minutes or an hour the entire time I was there, so the 11 days felt more like 15 days. Nightmare hell world lol One last note: there was an older guy there in his late 50s that had the whole place figured out and would shuffle around the unit all day. He didn't say much. I talked to another patient that told me that he had been there for over two years. I couldn't believe that they could keep someone that long. I think I might've had an easier time than most since I'm not truly mentally ill. I just needed to sober up. If I was a schizophrenic or had some sort of personality disorder, I could see how it would be easy to get trapped in this place (reminder: literal hell nightmare world) for a very long time 😬
My mother was here years ago she was visiting from Florida and they gave her a new medication from Florida so it messed with her so they sent her here and nothing was wrong with her doped her up she wasn't her self… wouldn't send my dog here
They lost all of my sons clothes and belongings. He came back with nothing. I made phone calls and the result was zero help. Shame on them
My mom got abused here when she was struggling as a teenager, this place is horrible and the doctors are horrible I hope it gets shut down
Take this warning and stay far away from this place as you can. The way the staff members treat the patients at this hospital it deplorable and down right inhumane. The staff members verbally abuse the patients on a… regular basis and if you make a complaint the administration will not believe what you say and will treat you as if you really are crazy. I have also seen the staff give out punishments to patients which are inhumane. One example of this is they took away my bed frame so I had to sleep on the floor as a punishment. Also speaking of inhumane the lights in the patient rooms do not even turn off all the way they are always half on even at night.
I'm giving a four-star because it's been since 2014 since I've been there first and last time taught me a lot and short amount of time I would recommend it to about anybody!
Let me get this straight. In the 1960s, gravestones from the old cemetery were moved, yet the bodies left behind. A building was then built on top of these graves. Exactly who were the "crazy" people coming up with this… brilliant idea? Definitely not the patients!
Lately I was introduced to the hospital. Not as a patient but visitor. I observed and was confirmed by the patient the staff were very kind and tried to accommodate the needs of them. Like all.places they are short on… staff But, showed no signs of idleness or aggravation. We pray for more administration to be hired. It's a big big job . I thank them for their kindness . I feel confident.in the plan they suggested as far as outpatient recommendations . Many thanks
True story: My Grandma was admitted as a patient in 1930. She was 30 years old. She suffered from pollegra (insanity from malnutrition). This was during the dust bowl. Back then they would forcibly sterilize crazy… women. They pulled up her gown and saw she had a scar and thought it had already been done so they left her alone. In truth, she had her appendix out (!). One day, as the inmates were outside picking berries or gardening, she simply walked away. She went on to migrate West and pick fruit in California and Washington. She lived a troubled life with 5 kids. My mom was the youngest. Thanks to the ineptitude of this place, I was born. Cheers Osawatomie! Edit: grammar
THEY ABUSE MEN I WROTE A WHOLE BOOK ON IT. Thank god I prayed and now I’m free.
I had a wonderful experience here they changed my life and stood me on solid ground and taught me I had a mental illness and ways to cope and deal with it and be a productive member of society I mean this place deserves… as much funding as it needs this place sets the foundation for a better tomorrow my experience here was a memorable one enough said this place changed my life and it changed my perspective and taught me how to be a Law abiding citizen and that there are rules for a reason they are there to protect us from doing stupid things and to keep our communities safe
In 1956 My mother was an involuntary patient at the Osawatomie State Hospital. She received shock treatment and was never the same afterwards. She died at age 50. The stress of this barbaric place contributed to her… short lifespan. I have no problem believing it is haunted.
They treat human beings like cattle. They care more about doping people up on medications then therapy or treating people like human beings. The workers create toxic atmospheres for patients and supervising staff cover… for them. They gaslight patients when workers are being problematic. The doctors are more interested in flaunting their title than actually taking patients serious about how their medications negatively impact a patient's physical being. Doctors here pretend that reading books and passing school is where learning ends and forget that they need to be open to the nuances of patients situations. The doctors need to be open minded to the reality that medications are not a solution for every single patient. Most of the workers do nothing to help when you have a concern or questions. The patient advocate Called "Steven" doesn't even respond to issues or do his job. They pretend that since they changed the rules to prevent workers from being allowed to call security on/sedate patients with syringes for petty/frivolous reasons. That the change automatically makes the environment a safer one. It doesn't when the toxic and petty mentality of the workers hasn't changed. The toxic attitudes of the workers are just as abusive as the physical abuse that used to happen in this facility. Emotional abuse is still abuse and they contribute to the situation with these behaviors. They act as if patients are not allowed to get upset about the emotional abuse, but the workers are allowed to get away with being emotionally abusive. It's in human nature to respond negatively to abuse of any kind. People aren't robots that are designed to shut down just to give poor behavior a pass. Patients have feelings, thoughts, and experiences. This place is still toxic as ever. If I could give zero stars, I would. Shame on people for behaving this way.
This place fried my childhood, I spent some time in rush back in the 70s, lots of time in the quit rooms, and its time for your medication, yeah cus that thorzine you made me take was way better then the pot I liked to… smoke. I even learned how to smoke cigs, even had a wall lighter in my room,
I was there once. The only comparison would be dangerous and much like hell on Earth. It is like a horrible nightmare and if you didn't need therapy before you sure will need it when you leave that place. Truth and… facts people. Zero stars the worst experience in my 43 yr life no doubt.
They stole my jewelry, my coach purse, my clothes and shoes! I have not the slightest idea why they did not return my stuff!? They diagnosed me in less than five minutes! Then I expressed to the social worker that I… would like to go to a Domestic Violence Shelter instead they took me to Wichita KS to the homeless shelter! Let's not forget I am not from ks! I called the hospital and expressed my concerns! They have yet to call me back! It is listed on my intake sheet ALL of my items! I am going to file a LAWSUIT!
