About VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System – Topeka

VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System operates from 2200 South West Gage Boulevard in Topeka. The site sits in Shawnee County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Eskridge and Oskaloosa. Kansas draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.

Hospital inpatient care, residential treatment and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Treatment Services at VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System

Hospital inpatient care, residential treatment and outpatient care run to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone.

Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers. Ask what happens at the end of the program as well as the beginning, since that is where plans usually thin out. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System Address, Location and Contact Information

The address is 2200 South West Gage Boulevard, Topeka, KS 66622, in Shawnee County. The catchment reaches Eskridge and Oskaloosa. Confirm what a program covers before traveling in, since the level of care listed is not always the level with capacity.

Telehealth appointments cover some contact where travel is difficult, which removes part of the journey for people further out. Ask what a first appointment involves and how long the current wait runs before making the trip. Waiting times vary with capacity, so call ahead rather than arriving unannounced.

I used to visit this Topeka VA center frequently and some times had to go to Leavenworth and KC. I relocated to the Tulsa, OK area. I was never displeased with the VAMC in Topeka, usually content and satisfied. I did… not know how good I had it! I miss the Topeka VA very much. The Oklahoma system state wide is bad and Tulsa in particular. It is leagues behind in all categories. Topeka is a very good facility with good friendly staff and nicer and more thoughtful amenities to boot. I have experienced the contrast.

As a disabled veteran, I have never been treated with such disregard as I have at the Topeka VA’s so-called “veteran ride program.” Recently, a non-medical staff member informed me that I “do not qualify” for… transportation services — even though I cannot safely drive myself to medical appointments. This decision was not based on any medical evaluation, yet it directly affects my ability to access the care I have earned and deserve. Veterans should not have to beg for basic transportation to vital appointments, especially when programs are publicly advertised as being here to support us. The indifference and gatekeeping I experienced are unacceptable. Programs like this exist because veterans face barriers to care — not to create new ones. The VA should be ashamed of treating disabled veterans as if we are an inconvenience instead of a priority.

I live in Emporia it takes me one hour to drive to the VA in Topeka. The VA says it cares about its veterans but Community Care won’t let me see my Urologist in Emporia because I don’t live far enough away and my cancer… care is just monitoring by the physician. So VA won’t pay for my Urologist visits in Emporia because they want me to drive one hour to Topeka. I am 75 and a widower.

SHOUT OUT ONCE AGAIN FOR THE LEAVENWORTH VA. I have been experiencing severe lower left back pain since Wednesday. When it hits, a sunami! Can't move fast, sit easy, walk , without severe pain. Pain meds, TENS Unit,… heating pad. Helps some. Decided to go the the VA Emergency Room for the first time ever. In and out in 60 minutes. From reception to pharmacy, they were outstanding. Definite 10 on a 1 low to 10 high scale! My ER Nurse was Debbie. Very personable and experienced. The Doctor was Dr. Glen Georger. Diagnosed quickly and prescribed a shot of my favorite- MORPHINE BABY! And a steroid shot. Gave me a RX for prednisone too. The pharmacist and tech were awesome. I am thankful we have a VA hospital as Dwight D. Eisenhower Eastern Kansas VA that is clean, orderly and great service. THANK YOU VHA.

This place has some serious pros and cons...but its "good" thing are better than its "Bad" things, so we'll go with 4 stars.

I've been involved with the VA since 2012. There have been ups and downs over the years but overall amazing care. The Behavioral Health Staff is incredible and the LEC is ran by top notch providers and I don't know… where I'd be without the help and guidance of the Home Telehealth program and the support my wife gets from the Caregiver Program is amazing and I then benefit from that care she is able to provide. I have had two doctors that I owe my life to as well multiple nurses and social workers. The entire crew is so much better than I deserve. People are quick to dog the VA. I say this. Everything has good things and bad things. There are things you can and can't control at the VA and in life. The sooner you can acknowledge that and accept this the sooner life will become less stressful! I am so thankful for the Topeka VA. I am happier than a pig in poop about the care I receive and where I am now. Life is good!👍Again thanks guys!

Though I was provided with loads of resources, I do not feel that all of my concerns were taken seriously. The behavioral health building was of more help the the actual ER. In the end, I decided to try another VA in a… different state.

I am a disabled veteran. I receive wonderful and respectful care from all of the staff at this location. The architecture might be a bit outdated like most VA facilities but they're working hard at renewing it and… trying to do it with least impact to us patients. Much work ahead in that dpt. But I gave it 5 because of people resources alone!
