Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is APS (American Psych Systems)?

American Psych Systems, Inc. was the Maryland operating company behind APS Healthcare, a managed behavioral health and employee assistance firm founded in 1992. It is not a health insurer: it manages mental health and substance use benefits, authorizations and provider networks on behalf of health plans and employers.

Today the APS name is active mainly in Puerto Rico, where APS Health manages behavioral health benefits and runs 16 APS ProClinics across the island.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Is American Psych Systems the same as APS Healthcare?

Yes. These are two names for one business: American Psych Systems was the Maryland operating subsidiary of APS Healthcare, Inc., a Delaware corporation, and its contracts were filed with APS Healthcare's 2001 securities registration. Members often saw either name on plan paperwork.

In Puerto Rico the business now trades as APS Health, with three divisions: APS HealthCare/WeCare, the APS ProClinics outpatient network, and the APS OptiMind employee assistance program.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Does APS Healthcare still exist?

No, not on the US mainland. Universal American sold the mainland APS Healthcare business to KEPRO in 2015, and KEPRO became Acentra Health in June 2023. The Puerto Rico operation went to a Metro Pavia Health System affiliate and continues today as APS Health.

The old apshealthcare.com site states the company was acquired. If a program names APS, ask which plan or vendor now handles the behavioral health benefit.

APS (American Psych Systems) is not a health insurer. It is the managed behavioral health and employee assistance company incorporated in Maryland as American Psych Systems, Inc. and known in later years as APS Healthcare, hired by health plans and employers to run intake, authorization, referrals and the behavioral health network. The benefit belongs to the health plan; APS is the company that decides what the plan authorizes and which clinician or program delivers it.

That split decides how an admission actually happens. Under its 1998 agreement with Priority Health in Michigan, APS handled intake, pre-authorization, referrals, utilization review, case management, discharge planning, network credentialing and a 24-hour toll-free triage line, paid by a monthly capitation for each member. The company then changed hands repeatedly: H.I.G. Capital took a stake in 2004, GTCR bought it in 2007, and Universal American acquired it in 2012. In 2015 the Puerto Rico subsidiaries went to an affiliate of Metro Pavia Health System and the mainland business went to KEPRO, which merged with CNSI and was renamed Acentra Health in June 2023.

Under the APS name, the operation still running today is APS Health in Puerto Rico, which manages mental health and substance use benefits for Plan Vital health plans and operates its own clinics. This guide covers what APS authorizes at each level of care, where pre-authorization applies and what criteria are used, what a member actually pays, how medication is handled, and how to find a program that works with APS.
