Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does MedCost cover rehab?

Yes, employer plans administered by MedCost commonly include substance use treatment, though the employer's Summary Plan Description sets the terms. MedCost is a third-party administrator for self-funded plans, and its behavioral health program reviews inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care for medical necessity.

Because the employer funds the claims, benefits differ between two workers who both carry a MedCost card. Call 1-800-795-1023 to check the level of care you need.

What is MedCost?

MedCost is a Winston-Salem, North Carolina benefits company founded in 1983. It runs a third-party administrator, MedCost Benefit Services, for self-funded employer health plans, plus a preferred provider network across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. It is not an insurer; employers pay the claims.

The network includes more than 100,000 providers and over 400 hospitals, and MedCost served more than 150,000 members at the time of its July 2025 ownership change.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Who owns MedCost?

Health Plans Inc. of Westborough, Massachusetts, announced its acquisition of MedCost on July 24, 2025. HPI is a Harvard Pilgrim Health Care company, and Harvard Pilgrim's parent is the nonprofit Point32Health. MedCost still operates under its own name, with no rebrand announced.

Earlier owners were Advocate Health from December 2022, Atrium Health from October 2020, and before that N.C. Baptist Hospital and Carolinas HealthCare System jointly.

MedCost is not an insurance company. It is a Winston-Salem, North Carolina business, founded in 1983, that runs a PPO provider network across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia and administers self-funded employer health plans through MedCost Benefit Services. The coverage behind a rehab admission comes from the employer’s plan; MedCost supplies the network, reviews medical necessity and processes the claim.

That changes the first question to ask. The Summary Plan Description written by the employer decides whether residential treatment is paid for and at what share, and it governs over MedCost’s own medical policies. A MedCost logo on an ID card does not always mean MedCost administers the plan either, because the network is rented by dozens of payer partners, among them Allied Benefit Systems, Healthgram, MedBen, WEB-TPA and, in Virginia only, Aetna, Humana and PHCS.

Ownership changed recently too. Health Plans Inc. of Westborough, Massachusetts announced its acquisition of MedCost on July 24, 2025, ending the Advocate Health era, and the MedCost name has continued on its own site since. This guide covers which levels of care a MedCost-administered plan handles, where precertification applies, what treatment costs, how medication is paid for and how to find a program inside the right network.
