Rehabs That Take Western Health Advantage

Western Health Advantage is a health plan serving the Sacramento region of Northern California, offering employer, individual and Medicare coverage. Coverage for drug and alcohol treatment varies by plan, network and level of care.California programs on this page name Western Health Advantage on their own websites. Like many HMOs, the plan usually expects members to use providers inside its network and may route behavioral health care through a separate company. Before admission, call member services to check your benefits and ask whether a referral or prior authorization is needed. Then ask the facility whether it is in network.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Western Health Advantage cover rehab?

Yes. The 2026 plan documents cover substance use treatment at every level: inpatient rehabilitation and withdrawal management, residential recovery, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient counseling. Benefits are administered by Optum Behavioral Health, and what you pay follows the copayment summary attached to your own HMO plan.

Inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient admissions all need prior authorization from Optum first, while routine office visits do not.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Does Western Health Advantage cover detox?

Yes. Detoxification is covered in both inpatient and outpatient formats, and inpatient withdrawal management is reviewed against the most recent ASAM Criteria. An inpatient detox stay needs prior authorization from Optum Behavioral Health, which answers around the clock at 800.765.6820.

On the Silver 73 HMO, inpatient acute care and detoxification cost 20 percent after the deductible; the Advantage 40 employer plan charges 30 percent coinsurance.

Detox Centershttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/detox-centers/
Does Western Health Advantage cover inpatient or residential rehab?

Yes, with prior authorization. Inpatient substance use rehabilitation and residential recovery services are covered benefits, reviewed by Optum under ASAM Criteria. Cost sharing differs by plan: 20 percent after deductible on the Silver 73 HMO, 30 percent coinsurance on Advantage 40, and $500 per admission on the 2026 FEHB High Option plan.

Standard authorization decisions come within five business days, or within 72 hours when the condition is potentially life-threatening, so ask the program to submit the request early.

Western Health Advantage is a nonprofit, provider-sponsored HMO based in Sacramento that covers members in Northern California, and its mental health and substance use benefits are not run by the plan itself. They are carved out to U.S. Behavioral Health Plan, California, the Optum entity doing business as OptumHealth Behavioral Solutions of California. For anyone arranging addiction treatment, that means one card, two networks and two phone lines.

The plan was founded in 1996 by a coalition of doctors and health care providers, and is co-owned today by Dignity Health Sacramento and NorthBay Health; UC Davis Health withdrew from the partnership in 2017. Coverage reaches Sacramento, Yolo, Solano, Napa, Sonoma and Marin counties, parts of El Dorado, Placer and Colusa, and Humboldt for group and CalPERS coverage. Because every product is an HMO, care is arranged inside the network except in defined situations.

This guide covers which levels of addiction treatment the 2026 Evidence of Coverage documents pay for, where Optum requires prior authorization, what named plans charge for a detox or residential admission, how addiction medication is split between the pharmacy and behavioral health benefits, and how to find a program in California that contracts with the network.
