Common questions about PHP

Answered from what is listed here.

Which South Dakota cities have PHP programs?

Tea, Rapid City and Madison, in that order, are where partial hospitalization listings in South Dakota cluster, so ask each program how its daily schedule runs.

Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Madison are the larger cities nearby for anyone weighing travel to a day program. Because partial hospitalization usually means attending much of the day on weekdays, the drive each morning and evening is worth planning before admission.

Is partial hospitalization covered by South Dakota Medicaid?

South Dakota Medicaid may cover partial hospitalization, and about half of the partial hospitalization programs in South Dakota record accepting it. Ask the admissions team whether it is billed directly, and raise prior authorization during that first call.

South Dakota Medicaid pays providers on a fee-for-service basis under a primary care case management model, including for the expansion adult group. No managed care plans sit between members and providers, so coverage follows the state program itself.

Are there PHP programs near a national forest in South Dakota?

Forest or wilderness land lies within 25 miles of nearly all of the partial hospitalization programs in South Dakota, a median of about 18.6 miles from the nearest one. The most-named features are Gitchie Manitou State Preserve, Black Elk Wilderness and Black Hills National Forest near these programs.

What is a partial hospitalization program for substance use in South Dakota?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) for a substance use disorder in South Dakota is a structured day program that The ASAM Criteria, the placement guide from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, classes as Level 2.5, usually with 20 or more hours of services a week. The newest edition of the guide calls Level 2.5 high-intensity outpatient treatment, so intake staff may use either name.

Many hospital PHPs that appear in search results treat mental health conditions only. Their schedules and program lengths do not automatically apply to addiction care. Ask any South Dakota program whether its day track treats substance use disorders, mental health or both.

In South Dakota, programs that treat substance use disorders are accredited by the Office of Licensing and Accreditation within the Department of Social Services, under the standards in Administrative Rules of South Dakota Article 67:61. If you need care for both conditions at once, start with dual diagnosis listings in South Dakota.

Day treatment often runs about four or more hours on each weekday, and most people go home at night, so daily travel is a practical question. The length of a program is not fixed; staff set a starting plan after an assessment and revisit it as needs change.

How is PHP different from IOP and residential treatment?

PHP has more weekly hours than intensive outpatient care but does not include overnight stays, which residential treatment does. The table uses ASAM level numbers, which South Dakota providers often use when describing placement.

Level of careWeekly hoursWhere you sleep
IOP (Level 2.1)9 or more for adultsHome
PHP (Level 2.5)20 or moreHome or sober housing
Residential (Level 3)24-hour settingOn site

An assessment usually points to PHP when weekly sessions are not enough but a person has a safe place to sleep. Compare IOP programs in South Dakota, residential rehab in South Dakota and standard outpatient care to see the range.

How many hours a day is PHP, and how long does it last?

Substance use PHP often runs about four or more hours a day across five weekdays, adding up to 20 or more hours a week. Program length is not fixed. A clinical assessment sets the starting plan, and staff revisit it as a person’s needs change. Some people move down to IOP after a few weeks, while others stay longer. If alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids could cause dangerous withdrawal, an assessment may show that medically managed withdrawal should come first. See detox options in South Dakota.

Getting to and from day treatment

Daily travel is often the biggest practical question in South Dakota. Two in three listed PHPs are in town settings, and one in three is rural. Sioux Falls Regional Airport is the nearest airport for two in three, with a median distance of 9 miles, which gives a rough idea of how close they are to the larger cities. Two in three are within 25 miles of a river, either the East Fork Vermillion or the Little Vermillion. Every listed program is within 25 miles of forest land, from Gitchie Manitou State Preserve to the Black Hills National Forest. Most people return home each night. The Division of Behavioral Health also funds recovery housing through participating supported housing providers, so it is worth asking about sober living in South Dakota. Some programs pair day sessions with telehealth follow-up.

Will South Dakota Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance cover PHP?

Coverage depends on your plan and on how the program is enrolled and bills, so ask before admission. South Dakota Medicaid is run by the Department of Social Services. It pays providers directly on a fee-for-service basis with primary care case management and uses no managed care plans. Expansion to more adults began July 1, 2023. Ask the program, and South Dakota Medicaid if needed, whether substance use day treatment is a covered service at that site. Read more on Medicaid-accepting programs.

Medicare Part B covers partial hospitalization in certain hospital outpatient departments and community mental health centers when a doctor certifies the need. Whether a substance use day track qualifies depends on how that program is set up. See Medicare rehab in South Dakota. Under federal parity law, most private plans that cover substance use care cannot limit it more strictly than comparable medical care. Ask your insurer about prior authorization and day limits.

Who should consider PHP instead of outpatient care?

PHP may fit someone whose assessment shows they need daily structure but who does not need 24-hour care. Examples include people who have had a return to use while in weekly counseling and people stepping down from a residential stay. Listings note insurers, languages and populations served, and whether mental health care is offered. Use those details to narrow your calls.

Looking up accreditation and getting help now

The Office of Licensing and Accreditation keeps a public behavioral health page where you can look up a South Dakota provider’s accreditation. Call or text 988 at any hour. In South Dakota, 988 also connects to the state’s substance use resource line, which offers Care Coordination on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central. You can also text “opioid” to 898211. For every level of care, start from the South Dakota treatment hub.
