About New Freedom Academy – Canterbury
New Freedom Academy operates from 367 Shaker Road in Canterbury. The site sits in Merrimack County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Belmont, Bristol and Franklin. New Hampshire draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Hospital inpatient care, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside medication-assisted treatment, telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Treatment Services at New Freedom Academy
Hospital inpatient care, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient care run to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone.
Residential runs both short and long term, so the question at intake is which length the assessment points toward. Buprenorphine and naltrexone are available and paired with counseling rather than prescribed alone. Trauma-specific services run alongside, which matters where the two are tangled together.

New Freedom Academy Address, Location and Contact Information
The address is 367 Shaker Road, Canterbury, NH 03224, in Merrimack County. The catchment reaches Belmont, Bristol and Franklin. Confirm what a program covers before traveling in, since the level of care listed is not always the level with capacity.
Telehealth appointments cover some contact where travel is difficult, which removes part of the journey for people further out. Ask what a first appointment involves and how long the current wait runs before making the trip. Waiting times vary with capacity, so call ahead rather than arriving unannounced.

New Freedom Academy Reviews and Ratings
What patients and their families say about New Freedom Academy sits alongside the licensing and accreditation detail on this page. Reading the two together gives a fuller picture of this Canterbury program than either gives alone.
Last year after an abrupt and unrecommended departure from Green Mountain, My daughter is currently at Canterbury and so far I’m breathing a breath of relief. We flew my daughter from out of state for treatment as the… state we live in doesn’t have the type of mental health care with coocurring substance abuse treatment (even though the facilities state they do). Canterbury so far has been the first facility to finally give my daughter the type of individualized care she needed. My daughter’s Case Worker Jen has been a Godsend. Jen became aware that my daughter was returning to New Hampshire for treatment and quickly took her under her guardian angel wings. Jen makes herself available to provide us as the parents reassurance with her knowledge at any time of the day, which is a blessing since we are not in the area to quickly come check on my daughter. I plan to come back and give an update on my review as treatment continues. So far, I highly recommend Canterbury for your family’s treatment!
Canterbury staff really are the best in the business. Lots of dedicated professionals here who really care about the clients. This is the place to go in NH for residential mental health treatment. Smaller facility on a… beautiful campus. They provide really good mental health treatment- I have seen the results first hand.
I can't even begin where to start..the staff here and the community is just...awesome. CM Jenn R is an angel and deserves ✨️ heart felt kudos for how special she is! People don't realize how hard the staff here work for… their clients over and above the job duties. It's their lives. To BHT's...Bob, Janine, Danielle, Jimmy, Ava, Bri..God bless u! Clinician Jenn you just...rock! Lol, so uplifting and beautiful spirit! Nurses Niki, Liz, Manny, and Eileen...love you girls to the moon! To EVERYONE there...I love u ❤️ guys! Thank you for caring to save my life 💜
Canterbury saved my life. The psych team, case managers and all of the staff were beyond amazing. I came feeling so hopeless and after I felt so restored. The other clients were also so wonderful, and we had a great… time. They program both changed and saved my life.
Recommendation for Canterbury Behavioral Health I am writing this recommendation on behalf of Canterbury Behavioral Health, a member of the Granite Recovery Centers group. Our family has experienced firsthand the… exceptional care, compassion, and clinical expertise that the Canterbury team provides. In 2024, my child experienced a psychotic break and was subsequently diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. The period following the diagnosis was incredibly challenging as we navigated an unfamiliar and frightening mental health journey. We learned about Canterbury Behavioral Health through a trusted friend who is a mental health counselor, and that recommendation changed the course of our child's recovery. When my child entered the program, they were in the difficult space between requiring the structure of an inpatient psychiatric unit and being able to safely remain at home. Canterbury provided exactly the level of care they needed. During their first stay, which lasted nearly four months, the clinical team helped stabilize their symptoms, develop effective coping strategies, and build the confidence necessary to successfully return to college. As is common with schizoaffective disorder, medication adjustments and the unpredictable nature of the illness later required a second admission. We made the decision to return to Canterbury without hesitation because of the positive experience we had previously. During this second stay, which lasted nearly six months, we once again witnessed the dedication and expertise of the care team. One of Canterbury's greatest strengths is its highly individualized approach to treatment. The clinicians work collaboratively with both the patient and the family to develop a treatment plan tailored to each person's unique needs, goals, and challenges. Their trauma-informed philosophy, combined with evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and individual counseling, provides patients with practical tools to manage their mental health while fostering resilience and long-term recovery. Equally important is the respect and compassion shown to families throughout the treatment process. Mental illness affects an entire family, and Canterbury recognizes the importance of involving loved ones as partners in recovery. Their communication, education, and support helped us better understand our child's diagnosis and equipped us to support them beyond the program. Our family is profoundly grateful for the care our child received at Canterbury Behavioral Health. The program gave our child hope, stability, and the opportunity to continue pursuing their education and future goals. I wholeheartedly recommend Canterbury Behavioral Health to any family seeking comprehensive, compassionate, evidence-based mental health treatment. Their commitment to individualized care and recovery has made an immeasurable difference in our child's life and in the lives of our entire family.
Canterbury behavior health is one of the best programs that I have ever been in. The people who work there really care and have been where we have been. Great atmosphere you can do many things while you’re there After… groups. Such as having fires, karaoke, candlemaking arts, and crafts in general, I don’t know where I would be today without Canterbury Health.
Five years ago, I came to Canterbury Behavioral Health at the lowest point in my life. I was broken, hopeless, and didn't know if recovery was possible. From the moment I arrived, the support and compassion I received… from my care team and all of their staff became a crucial part of my recovery and the foundation for the life I have today. I originally planned to stay for just 30 days of residential treatment, but I ended up completing the entire program and continuing into sober living. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. During my time there, I learned how to live life on life's terms without picking up a substance. I developed healthy coping skills, worked through my trauma, and, most importantly, found myself again by learning how to love and value who I am. Today, my life looks completely different. My family is back in my life, I've maintained the same job for over five years, and I have a life that I never thought was possible. I can honestly say this program saved me in every way. Recovery isn't easy, but this program works if you're willing to do the work. I came in sick and tired of being sick and tired, and I had the willingness and desire to get better. Canterbury gave me the tools, guidance, and support I needed, but I also learned that lasting recovery comes from showing up every day and choosing a different way to live. I truly can't say enough about how this program changed my life. It gave me hope, helped me heal, and gave me the opportunity to find myself again. I will always be grateful to everyone at Canterbury Behavioral Health for believing in me when I couldn't believe in myself.
Canterbury is an amazing place to go to for treatment. I went there for six months when I first got there I was in a super dark and bad place dealing with frustration, anxiety, a lot of anger mania but in that six… months that I was there, I gained six months of sobriety from drugs and alcohol. I also worked through a lot of trauma and getting re-diagnosed with different mental disorders that help me realize why I act the way I do. The staff is amazing. They really work with you to help you through your trauma struggles and addiction I couldn’t be more happier to have went there. Because now I’m in sober living and I’m almost one year sober
This treatment center was my last saving grace. I had fallen into a very dark place and was battling some depression and anxiety that also played into my physical health. I had been to other treatment facilities but… when I was in Concord Hospital after a failed suicide attempt I knew I needed help with my mental health and they were the only one around. I also knew that I had a lot of work ahead of me. CBH brought me out of the depths of hell. I had a care team that truly cared but also advised me that my coping skills and the work I was doing I needed to carry with me going forward out into the real world and that nothing changes if nothing changes and that would need to come from me and they were there to guide, advise, counsel but I would leave with what I put into my time there. CBH and the staff from admissions, BHT's, clinical staff, program facilitators, my med provider, nursing and operations staff truly saved my life. These people have put together an amazing program and I live everyday thankul and grateful I found them. My family and loved ones praise my turnaround and even when I am having a bad day I learned that this too shall pass and I get through it with the tools I acquired at CBH. My mental health is stronger today because of this facility and I am forever blessed to have my life back... actually a better life and that was almost two years ago now. I highly recommend Canterbury Behavioral Health for anyone struggling, you too can be a better version of yourself and the family at CBH have the amazing people to get you through the other side.
CBH changed my life for the better in so many ways. I learned so much about myself and how to better manage my mental health. They helped me find the right meds , get sober and helped me navigate life after treatment.… The staff at CBH are some of the most amazing people. If I ever needed treatment again this is the only place I would go.
I was admitted recently, and the whole process was terrible. First of all, they are listed as 24/7, but they actually don’t do admittance all day. They will obviously confiscate all electronics and any unauthorized… items. Items will be authorized once you speak with a CM (case manager) the next day of admittance. If you require anything medically that they have confiscated, you will still have to wait until the next day, regardless of how necessary it is for your health, mental or physical. Medicine you came in with will be managed by nurses who don’t read the prescription labels until you tell them what they are. They also don’t seem to know the side effects of your meds unless it's the ones of the medications the psychs prescribe you. It can be detrimental, or even LETHAL like in my case (I had a diabetic medication). They will just give out medication you brought to the facility whenever they do everyone else’s, no matter the time or necessity already stated on the prescription. Any other time that is not their already scheduled time, you can't request them. The BHTs (Behavioral Health Technicians) are glorified Camp Counselors that are there to manage you as a client of the facility, not as a patient looking to rehabilitate themselves. They will only check in on all of you when they remember, even if you came in with suicidal tendencies. They will, however, check on you every hour of the night, banging on the door loud enough in each room to wake you up and then open the door and poke their head in, not really checking if you are still breathing. I overheard that one of them snapped on a patient, which it's extremely unprofessional to do in a mental health facility. Their food quality is actually atrocious, only good food is the cereal, milk and granola from Market Basket. I also have seen that they allow cigarettes for the rehabilitating patients that are dealing with drug abuse, which defeats the purpose to quit an addictive, harmful substance. Patients are being enabled to use a legal and more commonly accepted addiction than an illegal one. Going back to the rooms, they will be infested with bugs and mold on every corner. It is clean enough to be a place of sleep, not a safe place to decompress in privacy. The group therapy they have on site is a class where some of the therapists (which actually are the only nice people that I had there) have a small lecture on a workbook they provide, not really engaging as much and kind of there to kill time for the day. Speaking of the days, they can be long, boring, and atrociously mind numbing. I had the luxury of finding a small book to read to kill time till I had to get out of my room. The one appointment I had with a psychologist ended briefly with them dismissing my main reasons for coming here. Instead, they decided to focus on my small mention of anxiety, and the fact I had no official diagnosis. They sent me to try out medications that didn't really get explained to me. I felt like bread in a duck pond to the psychs, which was the last straw for me. Finally, to the time of my discharge. After a 36-hour period, I decided to discharge myself. It took hours of them fighting me on it to extend my self-admittance by as much as two weeks. They even had the audacity of calling my boyfriend to ask if he is willing to set a boundary to keep me there, to perpetuate them making me stay with them. He said if I wanted to come home, I can, and they didn’t tell me that. They kept just pestering me that I had to follow through, guilt tripping me the whole way. After I got out, I went to look at the reviews of this place, and they had similar experiences to mine. Some being as recent as one year ago and as old as ten years ago, which speaks volumes of how long this place has failed at their purpose. People came out way worse than they went in and have made their families worry with their lack of communication. This place fails as a rehabilitation center of any sort, be it in substance abuse or mental health. Do not send your loved ones here or yourself for that matter.
I was at this facility last fall and it was the worst place imaginable. They didn't tell me that I would be there for a month not a week like I was told. The rooms had hundreds of lady bugs crawling around the bed… rooms. I was there for 5 days and 4 out of those 5 days they let me sleep. I didn't see a therapist at all like I was told when I had arrived. I saw a medication provider once who was going to put me on Lithium, which I wasn't informed that it would cause reproductive issues in the future. I was allowed a 10 min phone call to my family only 3 times a week. The food was horrible, everyone smoked inside including the staff, the bathrooms were disgusting. I told them I wanted to leave and they wouldn't let me until I was on the phone with my mom and told her all of this. I was more depressed that I was when I got there. My mom would call to talk to them and ask how I was doing and they lied to her and said that I was going to group and doing well. If you want to get your loved one help, do NOT send them here!
Great staff, very helpful while my wife was in treatment. I appreciated the weekly updates and the staff was kind and helpful on visitation days. One suggestion is to better watch the nature trail with staff, and watch… for male and female patients sneaking out there, nothing good going on out there with two patients in crisis left alone.
Terrible place. Forced to pray and they told me I would die if I left. Well here I am 10 years later to say this place ruined my life and no one should go here.
I will be forever be grateful for the staff taking great care of the father of my child. He has struggled with a lot of mental health and trauma. He's thriving and they saved his life.
Great place for family and loved ones struggling with mental health. Amazing staff!!
I owe every good part of my life to this place it has been a godsend and certainly the experience I’ve needed all my life I am forever grateful for the clinical staff and RSS
10/10 place to rebuild your life!! I recommend if you’re struggling with mental health or substance use! They give you the tools and opportunity to build your life back up
When I first arrived, I wasn’t sure if this was the right place for me. I was told don’t leave before the miracle. I can absolutely say That this was a life turning event and I’m so grateful that I took advantage of it.

They lied about getting a prior authorization, lied about my deductible applying, and are now refusing to refund $1500 my insurance said we overpaid them. They also lied about having an A+ rating from the BBB. Check the… BBB website. They’re not accredited by them at all and were sanctioned for lying about it almost 2 years ago. I also just realized they’re part of a huge national chain of “treatment” centers owned by a private equity firm, Baymark Health Services. Don’t let the NH-specific branding fool you. The thing they care most about is making money for their investors.
The staff were caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable. I felt like a person who was treated with respect, love, and care. Sessions were eye opening, coping skills learned invaluable, and the dedication of the medial… team to ensure I was properly medicated taking into account my feedback. Bob, Jesse, Ryan, Kim, Emily, Danielle, Jen, Chelsea, along with so many others are to be commended for their work and genuine interest in seeing clients succeed! Met some of my best friends at Canterbury! Also, learned to embody two mantras. Be Kind to Yourself &. Be Kind to Others. It so much better on this side of the grass! Love you all, Chris Tibbetts ✌🏻❤️
After the suicide of a close friend, my young adult son was really struggling. We look into several campus style treatment facility options and Canterbury was the most responsive to our inquiries. They were able to get… him in quickly and delivered everything they promised. He is doing well now and credits his time in Canterbury with a lot of his success. We would highly recommend this treatment facility to anyone struggling with their mental health.
I’ve been to three GRC facilities, but this one is where I truly found my spirituality. There was something so serene about being here, surrounded by people who genuinely wanted to grow both spiritually and mentally. It… was a beautiful experience that helped me finally accept that there is a solution && it really does work!
The staff here go above and beyond! And it’s very comfortable and inviting. Such a great place
In 2023 I admitted to Canterbury behavioral health struggling with addiction and being alone struggling severe mental health issues. I went threw this program and that's some of the most amazing staff members they gave… me a set of tools and skills it allowed me to begin the journey of coming out of the darkness of addiction and mental health. They introduced me to the program of alcoholics anonymous in the big book of AA. Because of Canterbury behavioral health today I live a life that I never knew existed. Today I am a proud member of the AA community as well as a productive member of society. Not only did Canterbury save my life I as well answer the calling for my higher power to go back and work at Canterbury behavioral health myself. I am so grateful today that I get to work beside amazing team members as well as some of the staff that help me save my life.
This place saved my life. Period. The staff is second to none and truly care about each and every client. It’s not very often when there is nothing negative to say about staff. But there really isn’t. This place will… always hold a place in my heart and I know I wouldn’t be here writing this if it wasn’t for CBH. They believed in me and saw in me what I couldn’t see in myself. Shout out to my care team Colleen and Chelsea. I love you both like family.
leaving with worse scars than i came in with due to sexual harassment bullying and homophobia + staffs inability to do anything about it.
