Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is American Behavioral?

American Behavioral is a Birmingham, Alabama managed behavioral health and employee assistance administrator, now part of Irvine-based Uprise Health. It handles utilization management, claims and provider network services for employers that fund their own mental health and substance use benefits, rather than selling insurance itself.

Documented Alabama clients include Auburn University, the University of Alabama employee assistance program and the City of Montgomery. Member questions go to 1-800-677-4544.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Is American Behavioral the same as Uprise Health?

Yes. American Behavioral is a constituent company of Uprise Health, the Irvine, California firm renamed from IBH, Integrated Behavioral Health, in October 2021. Member plan documents now call the administrator Uprise Health American Behavioral, or Uprise Health (formerly American Behavioral).

Uprise Health has been backed by Chicago private equity firm Periscope Equity since 2018, alongside sister companies Claremont EAP, EAP Preferred and HMC HealthWorks.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Is American Behavioral an insurance company?

No. It administers self-insured employer benefits, meaning the employer funds the claims while American Behavioral manages authorizations, the network and claim payment. No Medicaid, Medicare Advantage or marketplace products were found under the name; clients are employers, unions and public-sector groups.

Because each employer designs its own benefit, coverage varies sharply from one group to the next, so the employer's handbook sets the rules, not a standard policy.

American Behavioral is not an insurance company. It is a managed behavioral health administrator based in Birmingham, Alabama, now part of Uprise Health of Irvine, California, and it runs the behavioral side of an employer’s self-funded benefit: the provider network, the utilization management and the claims. The employer pays for the treatment; American Behavioral decides what the plan will authorize.

That makes the employer’s handbook the real answer to almost every coverage question. Auburn University’s medical plan pays for inpatient detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care. The City of Montgomery plan effective June 1, 2022 through May 31, 2023 lists detoxification, acute inpatient and day treatment but excludes treatment in a residential facility outright. Two Alabama employers, two different answers from the same administrator. There is also a second door: American Behavioral administers employee assistance programs, and an EAP pays for assessment and referral rather than for clinical treatment.

The guide below covers which levels of care the documented plans pay for, where pre-admission certification applies and who to call, what a stay costs under each plan’s cost share, how medication is handled when the drug benefit sits elsewhere, and how to find a program that the network actually contracts with.
