What is Medico insurance?

Medico is a group of three Iowa-domiciled insurance companies, Medico Insurance Company, Medico Corp Life and Medico Life and Health, owned by Wellabe of Des Moines. They mainly sell Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies, plus hospital indemnity, short-term care, dental and critical illness products for older adults.

It is not a major medical, employer, marketplace, Medicaid or Medicare Advantage plan, so what it pays toward treatment depends on which policy you hold.

Is Medico the same as Wellabe?

Yes, Medico is a Wellabe company. Parent American Enterprise Group adopted the single Wellabe brand on June 26, 2023, but the Medico legal entities kept their names and still issue the policies. Wellabe Mutual Holding Company is the ultimate owner, with six insurance subsidiaries.

Member services for all Wellabe companies runs through 800-228-6080, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central. Your card may still carry the Medico name.

Yes, but indirectly. A Medico Medicare Supplement policy has no rehab benefit of its own; it pays your share of what Original Medicare covers, which includes inpatient hospital treatment for substance use, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient counseling. Yes, when Medicare covers the stay. Part A pays for inpatient treatment in a general or psychiatric hospital, and a Medico Medigap plan picks up some or all of the 2026 Part A deductible of $1,736 per benefit period plus the daily coinsurance after day 60.

Part A allows up to 190 days of psychiatric hospital care in a lifetime; there is no such limit in a general hospital.

Yes, if the program bills Medicare. Medically supervised withdrawal during an inpatient hospital stay falls under Part A, and outpatient services fall under Part B, and the Medico policy then pays the Medicare deductible and coinsurance. Free-standing residential rehab is not a listed Medicare benefit.

Ask the center whether it accepts Original Medicare before admission, because a program that does not bill Medicare leaves the whole bill with you.

Does Medico cover intensive outpatient treatment?

Yes. Medicare Part B covers intensive outpatient programs of at least nine hours a week for mental health conditions including substance use, delivered at hospitals, community mental health centers, FQHCs, rural health clinics and opioid treatment programs. A Medico Medigap plan then pays the Part B coinsurance.

You normally owe 20% after the Part B deductible, $283 in 2026, or per-day coinsurance in hospital outpatient and community mental health center settings.

Does Medico cover mental health therapy?

Yes. Part B pays for individual and group psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management and family counseling when its main purpose is helping your treatment, and a Medico Medigap policy covers the 20% coinsurance. Psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, nurse practitioners and licensed counselors can all bill Medicare.

On Plan N you may still owe up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for an emergency room visit that does not end in admission.

Does Medico cover Suboxone or methadone?

Not through the Medigap policy itself, because Medigap plans sold after 2005 include no prescription drug coverage. Medicare Part B covers methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone given in an opioid treatment program or a doctor's office, with no copayment for OTP services once the Part B deductible is met.

Part D may cover buprenorphine and naltrexone filled at a pharmacy, so a separate Part D plan is worth holding alongside a Medico policy.

Does Medico require prior authorization for rehab?

No. Wellabe states that prior authorization is not required for services under its Medicare Supplement policies. Medicare's own medical necessity rules still decide whether a stay or program is covered, and the Medico policy then pays the deductible and coinsurance Medicare leaves to you.

No published criteria such as ASAM, InterQual or MCG apply here, because a Medigap carrier follows Medicare's coverage decision rather than making its own.

Does Medico cover out-of-network rehab?

There is no network. Medicare Supplement members can use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, with no referrals needed, so being in network with Medico effectively means the program accepts Original Medicare. A center that does not bill Medicare is not covered at all.

How much does rehab cost with Medico?

In 2026 the Part A hospital deductible is $1,736 per benefit period, with $434 a day for days 61 to 90 and $868 a day for lifetime reserve days, while outpatient care runs 20% after the $283 Part B deductible. Your plan letter decides how much of that Medico pays.

Plan G covers the Medicare cost sharing except the Part B deductible, and high-deductible F and G require up to $2,950 of covered costs first.

What states does Medico sell Medicare Supplement in?

Medicare Supplement was available in 28 states as of February 2025, when California, Maryland and New Jersey were added. Earlier state lists include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

Pennsylvania also offers Plan B and Wisconsin uses its own basic plan with riders. A Florida launch was announced in 2024 but no official date followed.

Is Medico a Medicare Advantage or Medicaid plan?

No, neither. Medico sells Medigap, which works only with Original Medicare and cannot be combined with or pay the costs of a Medicare Advantage plan. No Medicare Advantage or Medicaid managed care plan from Medico or Wellabe was found in any state.

If you have both Medicare and Medicaid, state Medicaid adds coverage, and you pay nothing for opioid use disorder services that Medicaid covers.

Does Medico hospital indemnity pay for rehab?

No, it does not. Medico is the name on three Iowa insurance companies owned by Wellabe, and their main business is Medicare Supplement, the coverage usually called Medigap, sold to older adults. A Medigap policy buys no treatment of its own. It pays the deductibles, copayments and coinsurance that Original Medicare leaves on the bill, so what a Medico card is worth toward addiction treatment is decided first by Medicare and only afterwards by the plan letter.

That distinction settles almost every question an admissions team will ask. Medicare Supplement is 48.5% of Wellabe’s net earned premium, but the same brand also appears on hospital indemnity and short-term care policies, which are fixed cash products stated not to be health insurance and not to meet minimum essential coverage. The hospital indemnity form excludes alcoholism, drug addiction and their complications outright. Two cards with the same word on them behave in opposite ways.

Wellabe’s companies are licensed in 49 states and the District of Columbia, with Medigap sold in 28 states after the February 2025 expansion into California, Maryland and New Jersey. Does Medico Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Indirectly, yes, if the policy is a Medicare Supplement one. Medigap has no rehab benefit of its own; it pays your share of substance use services that Original Medicare covers, which include inpatient hospital stays, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient treatment and outpatient therapy. Medicare pays first, and the Medico policy pays what the plan letter says it pays.

The hospital indemnity policy is the opposite case. It pays a fixed daily cash amount, $100 to $600 in $25 steps, for a chosen block of billed hospital days, and it pays that sum regardless of the actual bill or the provider. Because alcoholism and drug addiction are excluded unless the dependence arose from narcotics a physician prescribed, it should not be counted on as a way to fund a stay.

Which Medico policy is on the card? Which Levels of Care Does a Medico Medigap Policy Follow?

It follows Medicare’s ladder rather than a commercial one. Part A pays for inpatient stays in general and psychiatric hospitals, and Part B pays for outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization and behavioral health integration. Free-standing residential rehab is not listed as a Medicare benefit, which is the single widest gap in this coverage.

Medical Detox

Withdrawal management delivered as an inpatient hospital admission falls under Part A, and the Medico policy picks up the Part A deductible and coinsurance according to the plan letter. Medical detox run by a program that does not bill Medicare is a different matter, because Medigap can only follow where Medicare has already paid. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures, and an emergency department is the right destination when withdrawal is already underway.

Residential and Inpatient

Hospital-based addiction and psychiatric care is covered under Part A, and Medicare inpatient rehab is where a Medigap policy earns its premium, since the 2026 Part A deductible applies per benefit period rather than per year. One limit is worth knowing before admission: Part A pays for up to 190 days of care in a psychiatric hospital across a lifetime, with no equivalent cap on a psychiatric unit inside a general hospital.

PHP, IOP and Outpatient

Partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment sit under Part B. Medicare covers IOP of at least nine hours a week for mental health conditions including substance use disorder, delivered at hospitals, community mental health centers, federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics and opioid treatment programs, with the member owing 20% after the Part B deductible or per-day coinsurance in hospital outpatient and community mental health center settings. Individual and group psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management and family counseling intended to help the patient’s own treatment are covered with no stated visit limit.

Does Medico Need Prior Authorization for Rehab?

No. Wellabe states that prior authorization is not required for services under its Medicare Supplement policies, and no referral is needed either. Medicare’s own coverage and medical necessity rules still decide whether a service is paid, so the clinical question is settled by the treating hospital or clinic and Medicare, not by a utilization review department at Medico.

Nothing in the Wellabe material names criteria such as ASAM, InterQual or MCG, because a Medigap carrier does not make its own coverage decisions. There is also no behavioral health vendor, care management line, crisis line or nurse line published for Medico, so questions about Medicare mental health treatment go to the admitting program, while billing and plan questions go to Wellabe Customer Experience on 800-228-6080, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central.

What the Hospital Indemnity Policy Excludes

The Medico hospital indemnity forms exclude alcoholism, drug addiction and their complications, injuries sustained while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance that was not prescribed, and drugs including self-administered drugs. The base plan does pay its daily amount for inpatient mental health days, while the lump sum hospital confinement rider gives nothing for a confinement for mental or nervous disorders.

How Much Does Rehab Cost With Medico?

It depends entirely on the plan letter and on what Medicare charges first. In 2026 Original Medicare asks $1,736 as the Part A deductible per benefit period, $434 a day for days 61 to 90, and $868 a day for lifetime reserve days 91 to 150, plus 20% of the allowed amount for provider services. A Medico Medigap policy pays some or all of those figures.

Plan G covers the Medicare cost sharing apart from the Part B deductible, which is $283 in 2026. The high-deductible versions of F and G require up to $2,950 of Medicare-covered costs in 2026 before the policy pays anything. Plan N covers Part B coinsurance but leaves up to $20 for some office visits, the category a weekly therapy session falls into, and up to $50 for an emergency room visit that does not end in admission. Plan A pays hospital and Part B coinsurance but not the Part A deductible.

Those are the sums a program bills without any coverage, and they are the sums a Medigap member faces in full at a residential program that does not bill Medicare, which is why self pay rehab terms are worth asking about early. Two Wellabe features cut the figures in the other direction: hospitals in the USA Senior Care Network may waive all or part of the Part A deductible and trigger a $100 reduction on an upcoming premium, with participating hospitals listed on 800-872-3860, and a household discount applies where the member lives with someone aged 50 or over.

Does Medico Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medication?

Not through the policy itself. Medigap sold after 2005 carries no outpatient prescription drug coverage, so a separate Part D plan is needed. Medicare covers methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone for opioid use disorder: under Part A when given during an inpatient stay, under Part B in a physician’s office or an opioid treatment program, and under Part D for buprenorphine and naltrexone filled at a pharmacy.

Opioid treatment program services carry no copayment, though the Part B deductible applies, and that deductible is one of the amounts a Plan F policy pays. Medicare MAT delivered inside a program is billed as a program service rather than a pharmacy fill, so Suboxone and buprenorphine can arrive on the medical side or the drug side depending only on where it is dispensed.

Where the Prescription Is Filled

Ask the clinic which benefit will be billed before discharge. A tablet or film handed over at the clinic sits under Part B with the Medico policy behind it; the same molecule collected at a retail pharmacy sits under a Part D plan that Medico has nothing to do with, with its own formulary, tier and deductible. A change of formulation at the counter is an awkward place to learn that.

Which Rehab Centers Are In-Network With Medico?

There is no network. A Medicare Supplement member may use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, with no referrals and no in-network tier, so being in-network with Medico amounts to the program accepting Original Medicare and holding its state license to deliver the level of care. The question to put to an admissions team is simply whether it bills Medicare for this service.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Takes Medico?

Start with programs that bill Original Medicare, because the Medico policy pays only after Medicare has paid. Hospital-based addiction units, community mental health centers and opioid treatment programs are the settings Medicare names, and a hospital inside the USA Senior Care Network may waive part of the Part A deductible on top. Local availability matters as much as the policy. Medigap is sold in 28 states as of February 2025, and the directory lists programs state by state, including rehabs in Michigan, where several listings name Medico. A member who also qualifies for Medicaid has a second route, since dual eligibles pay nothing for opioid use disorder services their state Medicaid program covers.

Three questions before admission. Does this program bill Original Medicare for the level of care being proposed? Which plan letter is on my Medico policy, and does it pay the Part A deductible and the Part B deductible? If the answer to the first question is no, what would the whole stay cost me, and is there a hospital-based alternative that Medicare pays toward?

Is Medico the Same as Wellabe?

Yes. Wellabe is the parent brand, adopted on June 26, 2023 when American Enterprise Group rebranded, and the Medico legal entities kept their names and still issue the policies. Wellabe, Inc. sits under Wellabe Mutual Holding Company and has six insurance subsidiaries: the three Medico companies plus American Republic Insurance Company, American Republic Corp Insurance Company and Great Western Insurance Company. AM Best affirmed A (Excellent) financial strength ratings, stable outlook, for all six in May 2026.

Is Medico a Medicare Advantage or Medicaid Plan?

No. Medigap works only with Original Medicare and cannot be combined with a Medicare Advantage plan or pay its costs, and no Medicaid managed care plan was found under either the Medico or Wellabe name. Enrollment requires Medicare Parts A and B, and the six-month Medigap open enrollment window is the period with no health questions; a handful of states, among them Louisiana, Mississippi and Nebraska, allow under-65 Medicare beneficiaries to buy these policies.

Is Medico the Same as Medica or Medco?

No. Medica is a separate Minnesota-based health plan, and Medco Health Solutions was a pharmacy benefit manager bought by Express Scripts in April 2012. Neither is connected to Medico or Wellabe. If an intake form or a treatment program’s payment list says Medico and the card in hand says something close but not identical, read the issuing company name on the card, because it decides which rulebook applies.
