Rehabs That Take Washington Labor & Industries

Washington Labor & Industries, often called L&I, is the state agency that runs the workers’ compensation system for injured workers. On an accepted claim, L&I can cover care related to a workplace injury, which may include drug and alcohol treatment in some cases. Coverage depends on the claim, the approved treatment plan, the provider network and the level of care.

Centers in Washington on this page name L&I on their own websites, sometimes as Labor and Industries. Ask the facility and your claim manager about coverage, provider status, authorization and any cost before admission.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is Washington Labor & Industries?

The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, known as L&I, is a state agency in Tumwater that runs Washington's workers' compensation system, workplace safety and labor standards. It is not a health insurance plan; it pays only for care tied to an accepted work injury or occupational disease.

Washington is an exclusive State Fund state: roughly 75 percent of workers fall under the State Fund, about 25 percent under self-insured employers.

State Insurance Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/state-insurance/
Does L&I cover rehab?

Yes, in limited cases tied to an accepted claim. L&I or a self-insured employer may authorize addiction treatment at a licensed chemical dependency treatment center for up to six months per worker, when opioid tapering has failed, opioid use disorder is blocking recovery, and the provider submits a time-limited plan.

Treatment must be expected to significantly improve work capacity or vocational retraining; care for conditions unrelated to the work injury is not L&I's responsibility.

Residential Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/residential/
Does L&I cover detox?

Yes. Under Washington's medical aid rules, L&I or the self-insurer may pay for opioid weaning or detoxification and the treatment needed to support it, including formal inpatient detox at a licensed chemical dependency center as a second-step taper. Ultra-rapid detoxification using antagonist drugs is not covered.

Step one is usually a gradual community taper of roughly 10 percent of the original dose per week before detox is considered.

Washington Labor & Industries, usually shortened to L&I, is the state agency that runs Washington’s workers’ compensation insurance, and it is not a health plan. It pays for medical care tied to an accepted work injury or occupational disease, which means addiction treatment is payable only in a narrow, claim-related set of circumstances rather than as a standing benefit.

Washington is an exclusive State Fund state: an employer either insures through the fund L&I administers or qualifies to self-insure. Roughly 75% of Washington workers sit under the State Fund, and the remaining quarter work for about 400 large self-insured employers that pay benefits directly, often through a licensed third-party administrator, under L&I’s medical rules and oversight. The treatment rules are the same on both routes; what changes is who authorizes and who answers the phone.

This guide covers when L&I pays for detox and addiction treatment, the six-month ceiling and the conditions attached to it, how authorization works on State Fund and self-insured claims, what an injured worker pays, which medications are payable, and how to find a program inside L&I’s provider network in Washington.
