What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home in New York is shared housing for people in recovery where alcohol and drugs are not allowed, and unlike rehab, the home provides no treatment itself. Residents usually attend counseling or medication appointments elsewhere, often through outpatient programs in New York or an intensive outpatient program.

New York’s residential treatment programs are different. They are certified by the Office of Addiction Services and Supports under Part 820 and deliver clinical care on site. Sober homes, by contrast, can seek a voluntary state certification, and only certified homes may use the title Certified Recovery Residence, so ask to see the current certificate.

Correctional halfway houses are a separate category again. A halfway house tied to parole or a sentence is usually a condition of release, while moving into a sober home is a housing choice that a resident makes and pays for. Ask for every charge in writing, including utilities, food and drug testing fees, before paying a deposit.

House rules vary, so ask about curfew, chores, guests, meeting requirements and what happens after a return to use. Some homes accept residents taking methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone and others do not, which matters for anyone receiving medication for opioid use disorder.

How much does sober living cost in New York, and who pays?

Ask what happens after a return to use. Some homes ask a resident to leave the same day. Tolerance drops after a period without use, so a return to use followed by a sudden move can carry a serious overdose risk. A safer policy includes help getting to detox in New York or another placement, rather than a person leaving alone at night.

Can you live in a sober home while taking medication for opioid use disorder?

Some sober homes in New York accept residents on medication for opioid use disorder and some do not, so ask directly before you apply.
