What is an intensive outpatient program for substance use in New York?

An intensive outpatient program, or IOP, is a structured, nonresidential level of substance use treatment that meets several times a week for a set number of hours. In New York, addiction outpatient programs need an operating certificate from the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), issued under 14 NYCRR Part 810. Outpatient program rules are set out in Part 822. Sessions usually combine group therapy, individual counseling and, where needed, medication for opioid or alcohol use disorder.
