I can honestly say that Shea has changed my life and has set me up for success more than once. I’ve been through the program a few different times, and every time I left, I felt like I was walking out a different person… than when I came in. That says a lot about the impact this place can have when you’re truly willing to put the work in. The program has structure, but you have to make a choice to follow it. You have to show up, attend groups, participate, be honest with yourself, and actually take advantage of the resources and support being offered. Like anything in life, you truly get out of this program what you put into it. It isn’t about someone else doing the work for you. It’s about having a place where you can learn, grow, and have people around you who genuinely want to see you succeed. Also huge shout out to Davyn, who has been incredibly supportive every time I’ve been there. She consistently shows up for clients, listens, encourages people, and genuinely seems to come into work every day because she cares about helping people. Having someone who makes you feel seen, heard, and supported during some of your hardest moments can make a huge difference. I also want to give a huge shout out to Binah for helping me get set up for success and continuing to check in with me even after leaving the program. Her support with aftercare has meant a lot to me, and it’s reassuring to know that the support doesn’t necessarily end when you walk out the door. She has continued to help me stay connected to the resources and support I need to keep moving forward. I’m incredibly grateful for Shea and for everyone who has been part of my journey there. Every time I’ve gone, I’ve taken something meaningful with me, and I’ve been given tools and support that have helped me continue moving forward. It’s not a magic fix, and you have to be willing to put in the effort, but if you are, this program can truly be life changing. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have gone through it and for the people who have helped me along the way. Thank you guys for always supporting me :) - Charity
One of the best options for truly Mental Health Primary Residential care. There are a lot of other options that are capable of treating dual diagnosis, but First lLght Recovery is well known and established as TRUE MH… facility that is tried, true and proven effective to help those suffering with mental health disorder. Also they have an advantage in the fact that they are in network with most or all commercial insurance plans 🙏🏽🙌🏽
You will be denied for a behavioral issue of depression ( if you state you attempted to hang your self 2-14 years ago), be cautious of false advertising. If I were the business I would not consider myself a behavioral… or mental facility at all, it’s false advertising when you deny people for something in the past
Do not come here if you have a registered service animal, they will deny you treatment and violate your ADA rights to having a service animal accompany you in treatment. I have proof of the denial in which case will be… reported to the California civil rights department as discrimination. " After the review was posted I was contacted by a different employee ( not Binah the admissions director who denied me in the first place. ) I was told that management stated something different to them and they apologized for it. ( Once again not the admissions director ) I have decided to leave my review as it is an honest review of my experience with admissions staff, and hope in the future they take the time to actually ask the two questions they are only legally able to ask for anyone else with ADA service animals. New update, they do not actually assist with mental health ( if you attempted suicide by means of hanging 2- 14 years in the past ) that is per the clinical team.
I just wanted to take a moment to share how amazing First Light Recovery is. I’ve had the opportunity to work with their wonderful team and have referred many clients to their care over the years. They consistently go… above and beyond to make sure each person feels supported, cared for, and genuinely valued throughout their treatment experience. Every client I’ve referred has come back with wonderful things to say about the staff, the program, and the level of care they received. In behavioral health, it can be difficult to find a program you truly trust with someone who is struggling and needs the right support, and First Light is absolutely one of those places for me. Their team is compassionate, responsive, professional, and truly cares about the people they serve. I feel confident referring clients to them knowing they will be in good hands. First Light is fantastic, and I will absolutely continue trusting their team to care for those in need. Highly recommend!
My time here was wonderful! The team was thoughtful in respect to my placement and was so thorough and seedy when it came time to get me admitted. The house staff had a nice diversity and many personalities that made it… easy to find connection when I was homesick. My therapist was insightful and offered great feedback and helped me tremendously in the time I was there. She gave me reasonable expectations for what we could achieve together in my time at the house. The psychiatrist on staff was a kind hearted gentle man who made me feel heard and took my thoughts into consideration as we made adjustments to my medication regiment. Some of the groups lacked creativity or seemed redundant but I think that was because some of the staff were reasonably new hires and hadn’t found their groove yet. We had fun outings and had a reasonable amount of freedom while still having structure to get the work done to heal and let me return to my family.
this review is way overdue… i came to first light earlier this year, and it saved my life. the house feels so cozy and safe, does not feel like a prison at all. the staff are so amazing and so kind. a big special thank… you to shea, i’m so thankful to have had you as my therapist even though it was for a short period of time. so caring, smart, honest but gentle, and reassuring. i think about you and everything that you taught us every day. first light holds a special place in my heart. i couldn’t thank you all enough. :) and to anyone who feels like there isn’t a light at the end of the tunnel, there truly are people out there who care and want to help. for the longest time i didn’t believe that. i know it might not be the answer you want to hear, but please just give yourself time and give yourself grace. there is no shame in getting help, no matter what that help looks like. i couldn’t recommend first light recovery enough. lots and lots of love, moriah :) ps give cinder the neighborhood orange cat pets and kisses for me
My experience at First Light Recovery was extremely difficult, and unfortunately did not meet the expectations I had based on the recommendations I received prior to admission. While others may have had positive… experiences, I would strongly encourage individuals with significant trauma histories or complex PTSD to carefully evaluate whether this program is the right fit for their needs. My primary concern is the lack of trauma-informed care and clinical support. If a facility is employing staff with limited behavioral health experience, comprehensive training in trauma-informed care, crisis de-escalation, restorative practices, and evidence-based approaches such as DBT and CBT should be a priority. One incident that significantly impacted my sense of safety occurred on my final day. Another client became aggressive enough that all residents were removed from the house for nearly four hours, resulting in canceled programming and disruption to treatment. When we returned, the client remained in the home. I was informed there would be therapeutic support that evening to help process the incident, but none was provided. Due to my trauma history, I expressed concerns about sharing space with the client involved and requested alternative sleeping arrangements. The options offered were extremely limited despite reasonable solutions being proposed. I was also surprised by the lack of available medical and clinical oversight. There was no physician or licensed mental health professional on-site or on-call for emergencies. Residents were largely dependent on mental health technicians, many of whom appeared to have limited formal training or credentials. While medications are technically “self-administered,” I personally identified multiple medication errors during my stay. Had those errors not been caught, the consequences could have been serious. The physical condition of the facility was another concern. While residents participate in daily household chores, the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the property fell below what I expected from a treatment center. I observed stained carpeting, worn and damaged bedding, rusty fixtures, sticky floors, mold buildup in at least one shower, and bathrooms containing leftover products from previous residents. Therapeutic support was also more limited than I anticipated. While there were several groups each day, only a small portion were facilitated by licensed clinicians. Most groups were run by technicians, and individual therapy was limited to approximately two hours per week. Psychiatric services consisted of very brief telehealth appointments. Most concerning was that I repeatedly expressed concerns about my safety, emotional state, and urges both before and after discharge. I felt these concerns were not adequately addressed. Decisions regarding my discharge appeared to be made without sufficient consideration of the risks I was communicating at the time, and events unfolded afterward much as I had feared they would. I also struggled with the overall environment and interactions with leadership. At times I felt dismissed, unheard, and treated differently than other residents. As a survivor of sexual assault, I did not feel consistently safe in a setting where I was often the only female present during overnight hours. It took repeated requests before my concerns were meaningfully acknowledged. I do want to recognize Sienna, my therapist, who was compassionate, professional, and respectful throughout my stay. She consistently listened to my concerns and was one of the few people who made me feel supported during a very difficult experience. I do not write this review lightly. Residential treatment can be life-changing when done well, and people seeking help deserve environments that prioritize safety, clinical oversight, trauma-informed care, and respectful treatment. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this program to individuals with significant trauma histories or those requiring a higher level of clinical support.
Best mental health program I’ve ever worked with!
First Light Recovery has an excellent team. We are proud to partner with such an amazing organization that truly cares for everyone who comes through their doors. Their program is outstanding, the staff goes above and… beyond, and they are genuinely dedicated to helping anyone struggling with their mental health. It is the perfect safe space to begin your journey. Thank you for all you do in our communities!
This was my first time going into a residential treatment center. I didn’t know what to expect or how I was going to be treated. It was EXACTLY what I needed. The integration of group therapy with arts/crafts,… processing, experiential outings and twice a week one on one therapy was done with such kindness grace and compassion!! We had a total of 5 residents and usually 2-3 healthcare techs available 24/7. In addition we saw the psychiatrist every Wednesday who really listed and adjusted any medication on an individual basis. No one size fits all. At the end I was so sad to leave due to the connections I had made. I’d give it a 10/10 two thumbs up!!
I think Therapist and doctors need to do more group work but overall a lovely place to get treatment.
I stayed at First Light Recovery twice. Both times were life saving! The therapist, Doctor and techs were kind and empathetic. Both houses were clean and amenities were beyond expectations. The life long skills and… friends I made while at First Light will stay with me forever. I thank Jen, Shea, Charlie and the rest of the tech for every kindness shown to me. I’m well and use my skills daily in my life! Thanks again!
First Light Recovery came into my life during one of the most destabilizing periods I’ve ever experienced. I arrived in severe emotional distress, dealing with a major mental health crisis involving bipolar II,… medication instability, depression, anxiety, and early sobriety. I had been hospitalized about two weeks prior and was exhausted, scared, and unsure how to move forward. The intake process was long but intentional and thorough. Within a couple of hours of arrival, I met with a psychiatrist and made necessary medication adjustments, which I desperately needed. I arrived on a Saturday, so I met my therapist on Monday, and that first session immediately set a clear, productive direction for my time in the program. My therapist was the best I’ve ever worked with — professional, direct, and deeply compassionate. They helped me understand long-standing patterns, emotional regulation issues, and the root causes behind struggles I’d lived with for years. I only wish I could continue care with them. The living environment is exceptional. You live in a real house, not an institutional facility. During my stay, I never had more than three housemates, which created a calm, personal, and supportive atmosphere. That smaller setting made it easier to build real connections with other residents. The program is highly structured, with daily groups focused on mental health, physical health, and long-term stability. What sets First Light apart is the balance between structure and autonomy. Residents have access to electronics, smart TVs in bedrooms, and shared spaces to relax together. After the first seven days, you’re allowed solo walks and outings of up to four hours. That freedom made me more receptive to treatment, not less. Residents are encouraged to cook their own meals and receive a weekly $75 grocery stipend, which promotes independence and self-care. The house is clean, organized, and thoughtfully set up, with individual pantry and refrigerator space for each resident. Overall, First Light Recovery helped stabilize me during a time when I didn’t know how to keep going. I’m grateful for the staff, the structure, and the humanity they showed me. It became a home when I needed one most. If you’re looking for an inpatient mental health program that treats you with dignity and compassion, this is it.
First Light Recovery Helped me immensely. When I first came I was anxious, suicidal and deeply depressed but the staff was so kind and working with Shea helped me so much. Because during my sessions with her, she showed… me my potential and helped me understand if I wanted to get better I needed to strive to be better and while it may not be my fault I am in the situation I’m in it’s my responsibility to get out of it. Would 100% recommend.
First Light helped me put an end to a long cycle of being in and out of psychiatric hospitals. This residential program is very laidback and felt like a home. They also allow the patients get a lot of liberty in what… they can and can’t do while still having the program be safe. The house is very nice and the staff are all awesome. You can tell they really care. Thank you First Light, glad to know you have my back!
I have had the opportunity to work with Amy & the team at First Light on several occasions. They consistently go above & beyond with providing quality care to clients needing mental health treatment. Highly recommend… this program!
It was nice working with you.
Hi, my name is Evan and here is my review of First Light Recovery. Firstly, let me start off by saying, I’ve been to a few mental care houses; and honestly this place is professional and caring towards clients and they… maintain a good policy. Staff at First Light meet patient needs and excellent expectations for a good and safe environment. Clients are also good. If you decide that you need a break and just want to work on your mental health and persona, this place, if it’s in your area or not, they do travel somewhat far in order to bring you to a place of recovery; It is a good choice and you won’t regret coming. It is a welcoming experience and a good service to people and the community. They do accommodate for you in many ways so you won’t get bored or feel trapped. In many words, short, this place is pretty cool. Sincerely to the staff, and the clients I stayed with, at this fine facility, thank you. Evan, to First Light Recovery, thank you.
My son has recently started his treatment at this center in California for mental health and addiction. It hasn’t been long yet, so I can’t speak to the long-term results, but I can already say that my experience with… the staff—especially the woman who communicates with me—has been very positive. She takes everything to heart and shows a high level of responsibility and care. I truly hope that when my son completes his program, he will be better prepared to take care of himself, make mature choices, and live independently. From what I’ve seen so far, I feel optimistic that this center will help him grow in that direction.
Great place to recenter and get the support you need.
They do very honest work and have a great team. It’s hard to find people to trust with this level of care but they lived up to the expectations presented to us. Highly recommend!
The staff is wonderful, the primary therapist is amazing, and I came out healed hopefully you can do the same. Lol
Comfortable residence with genuine caring staff. Thank you!!
I loved this place. The staff truly changed my life for the better. The therapist saw my potential and pushed me to get there and I couldn’t be more thankful. The mental health tech staff are amazing and caring about… your mental health healing and journey. I am so grateful! The pictures shown are artwork of previous clients! - JP
Website states they offer fitness and nutrition classes. Nutrition classes are not given by a nutrionist. In fact they do not even have a nutrionist. The do nothing in regards to fitness. There is zero fitness equipment… in the homes. There are no nurses and everything is handled by the techs who have zero training in anything medical. This place is a scam and a rip off.
All staff are amazing Jay, charles, andrew, smiley, travis, josh, sienna all amazing staff and definitely deserve a raise. They do more than their job they have provided so much support and love and are all amazing… people.
