About Healthy Minds/Chestnut Ridge – Morgantown
Healthy Minds/Chestnut Ridge operates from 930 Chestnut Ridge Road in Morgantown. The site sits in Monongalia County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Booth, Brookhaven and Cassville. West Virginia draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Hospital inpatient care, detox and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside medication-assisted treatment, telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Detox and Rehab Services at Healthy Minds/Chestnut Ridge
Withdrawal management covers alcohol, benzodiazepine, cocaine, methamphetamine and opioid dependence and is handled on site rather than referred elsewhere. Stepping down into continuing care happens with the same team, so there is no second intake to sit through. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Buprenorphine and naltrexone are available and paired with counseling rather than prescribed alone. Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen.

Healthy Minds/Chestnut Ridge Reviews and Ratings
Families searching for treatment in Morgantown often start with reviews. If you were a patient at Healthy Minds/Chestnut Ridge, or supported one, sharing how it went gives them something real to go on.
I feel sad seeing these other reviews speak negatively of this place. Especially since I've had such a good experience. I think this is 100% due to my psychiatrist. He seems to be the only doctor who actually reads and… responds to messages as soon as he's able. So much so that I've had to label some messages as not important or I'll say "this can wait until your not busy" and he will still respond quickly. I'm not saying all the doctors need to multi-task like mine does. What I'm saying is when I see my doctor he really shows how much he cares about his profession and his patients. He puts a ton of effort into ensuring his patients get the care they need. The other doctors are like doctors you see in the hospital. It takes forever to get any response from them and when you finally get to see them, your in and out so quick that you can hardly remember what, if anything, you discussed.
Its an alright place! Every day when I was sent here a few months ago, we would go by a "daily schedule" so times posted on the board with what activity waa going on, most of the time they never followed this board or… took us off the unit often, for things like art and gym. The group therapy was one thing I had no complaints about, I believe the therapists' name was Destiny? SO SWEET, LOVE HER, super kind and understanding!! although when they washed your clothes they still came back smelling bad or took their good old time getting it back to your room. Some nurses however would see me in a breakdown state and ask if I was alright, I said I wasn't but they just walked out of my room and didn't say anything and proceeded to stare at me when I was still upset outside of my rooms door. A couple nurses would also come in throughout the night if I was sleeping, or not in my room and take the small little turtle holding my mother's ashes out of the room, causing me to panic and search all over for it freaking out, when we ARE allowed to infact have that especially when it carries that much value, glad to have some different schedule nurses get it back to me after the others took it but this happened multiple times and got me VERY frustrated, annoyed, and upset. We spent just about every day being 50% in our rooms, 35% coloring at the main table, and 15% in group. Overall, its alright but still drove me a little nuts not having anything else to do at all. Oh yeah, not to mention everyone's showers leaked the moment you turned it on, all the way out of the bathroom and going to the main rooms door, a mess. Would give it a 3.5 if I could because theres so many factors that make this not exactly a 4/5 star unit.
I'd like to know what Krista meant by" will consider discontinuing stimulants but will defer to preserve raport". That doesn't sound like patient care to me , if I find out my suspicions are correct & this was a covert… forensic Psychiatry eval ( duel role violation) due to my likely lawsuit against wvum for discharging me while still sedated , resulting in a car accident) there's gonna be a lot more regulatory agencies involved in investigating her . They cancelled my appt w my regular Dr & rescheduled me w/ Krista Ulisse,DO who just happens 2 also b board certified in Forensic Psychiatry. Why schedule me w her all of a sudden ? I have my theories but cant publicly discuss them yet. I really wish they had not cx'd my appt w my regular Dr ,Dr Thompson who is a great Dr ,she is resident & her attending Dr Chandran is a great Dr & a very nice man. At my first & only visit w ulisse on 7/3/24 she abruptly discontinued my Adderall which I've been on for about 17 yrs at 40 mg daily &replaced it w Ritalin 15 mg, it was not remotely comparable . She refused to reinstate my Adderall &had the nerve 2 bill $205 for a phone call 2 tell me blatantly false information. After being on the ritalin abt 2 wks I told her ( via the $205 billed phone call that she did NOT get my consent to bill for . It is also not in my appt history ( because it was not a legit" phone appt ") the Ritalin isnt effective for me & I'm having side effects. She told me Ritalin takes time 2 build up in your system & to give it another week . That's blatantly false Information. Obviously stimulants dont titrate the way Zoloft for ex .does . When I called the clinic 2 ask 2 switch 2 a new Dr ,I don't feel Ulisse is competent /trustworthy the clinic after a few days of no returned call that they had promised, stonewalled me &literally told me we were instructed by legal not to speak to you & referred me to legal dept & patient "advocate" who also stonewalled me . This is pt abandonment/neglect . They're all( the ones who are complicit , not Thompson & Chandran) getting reported inc.the Social worker who was supposed 2 call me but he didn't ,the wvuh lawyer etc. Reported to State Board of Osteopathic Medicine & Lawyers Disciplinary Board & WV Attorney General , etc etc. Reported Ulisse 4 among other things , using inappropriately high &complex billing codes .Am now going out of network bc I refuse 2 see a wvuh Dr 4 continuous treatment after this abysmal experience. Because of them I have a huge out of network bill ,but that non wvuh Dr right away gave me a script 4 Adderall , which supports my point that ulisse had no legal or medical justification 4 abruptly discontinuing my Adderall
they didn't help me at all, the people were nice they just didn't help me .
The phone receptionist we called is super disrespectful and needs to keep her opinions on patients dissatisfaction to herself and do her job so we don't have to get the run around on important medication.
As of June 9th. 2025 I'm 10 years clean and sober. Dr Barry and Dr Reynolds are the two greatest Drs I've had the pleasure meeting. If you're looking for help you can't find a better place. In my opinion. Best of luck… to you and your recovery. One day at a time.
I'll see the eating disorder specialist in hell made my trauma worse but I'll give two stars cause the nurses were nice atleast
Very unorganized. My psychiatrist left almost 3 years ago and I was told I was "doing better didn't need as much help" before she left, was supposed to be appointed someone new and never was. Being a person of BPD this… led me to feelings that she was right, I didn't need medicine or them at all. Ruined my last 2 years of life. Still have no idea who my new appointee was supposed to be, have scheduled me with like 3 different people since who don't listen. All they seem to want to do is prescribe different versions of basic anxiety/depression medications. Really don't think they're interested in actually helping if it means anything other than prozac, which ive taken many times since I was 12. But who listens to the girl who's been in mental health services for about 12 years of her life lmao. Go to Harmony!!!
I have been a patient with them since I was 8, I am now 28 years old. Their motto is: If we do the bare minimum, we cannot be held liable. They use ineffective medication for anxiety, they are terrified of prescribing… controlled substances, especially to people with a history of ~substance use~. They are completely ignorant of medication assisted treatment for methamphetamine use and WILL set you up for failure. They use a ~holistic~ approach even when inappropriate. They often have a hard time following what you are saying because they are extremely skeptical of patient's personal subjective experiences and very busy, and as a result only skim or assume your message. I have been hospitalized here 4 out of my 7 total hospitalizations. Another quirk, if you are vegetarian, it will be a full day before this is communicated to the cafeteria or reflected in your chart, it does not matter if you have been there before. They will laugh at you if you ask for specific medication that has worked for you in the past if it is a controlled substance. Most of the practitioners are either complacent or inexperienced. However, I have been to most major mental hospitals in WV and I was abused the least here. so for that, 2 stars.
For outpatient, I think it's great! I'm able to have MyChart visits with my provider --- never an issue. Dr. Cadenas is AMAZING. I haven't had such a great psychiatrist in years. If you're looking for a new doc, he's… your guy. You never feel judged, and he always talks things through instead of making the choice for you.
The last month has been a HORRIBLE experience in large part due to WVU Chestnut Ridge, but honestly because of all of WVU’s mental health services. During my loved ones’ stay, I was lied to by a doctor about their… mental state so that they could make room, which resulted in SEVERE consequences for us, they were in a much worse situation due to the hospital’s negligence. The ER nurses are horrible individuals, they ignored and allowed my loved one to have constant panic attacks and were angry with me when I asked for help after 12 hours of this. The only things I ever saw them do was sit and talk to each other in a back room. I was genuinely shocked by his treatment during our time there. Absolutely 0 compassion from nurses, however I will say the social workers we encountered were fantastic and seemed to do their best despite the difficult situation. Aside from that, staff appeared overall nasty towards most patients during my visit and according to my loved one at Chestnut Ridge. I DO NOT recommend going here if you are dealing with mental health issues, there are places that will treat you so much better.
Quality place
I have been there from 4/16-/6-2 they could of did something a bit different I might have to go back in again soon
completely incompetent and neglectful staff with no real knowledge on mental health. they treat patients like criminals and will even hold them illegally if they wish to be discharged AMA. They hire fresh out of college… no experience nurses to treat some of the most sensitive and care-intensive people. completely disgusted with their lack of communication to patients families about treatment. NEVER get admitted here. you’re better off going untreated than being treated by these clowns.
Terrible. Of no help whatsoever.
This place is gross. You're treated like a criminal. Being a 49 year old adult, I was treated like a 4 year old. You are escorted by campus security through the ER like some criminal, not allowed to carry your own bags,… all my things gone through as if I'd sneak in drugs, although I was there to try to get help for anxiety. They say it's for our own good. It's ridiculous that the patients are treated like felons 24/7.
I was a WVU student. I went here for inpatient care for a few days because I was caught with a bottle of pills I planned to kill myself with. This hospital missed that I was bipolar- straight up missed it. I was manic… in there, for multiple days. They upped my lexapro and let me go. Lexapro does not work for bipolar patients. They also had students come in and observe like we were lab rats or something. I’m scared that people are being trained by this place. They let me go, after not realizing I was bipolar, and I tried to kill myself 2 days later. I did it in my WVU dorm room in Lincoln hall. I have some pretty bad organ damage. I wish they had realized something was severely wrong. I was very sick. Go anywhere but here if you can. Don’t go to this place. You’re made into a spectacle for students and they don’t even pay enough attention to someone who is actively psychotic to realize that they are bipolar. it’s sad.
Always have been treated well, and their ACT program is amazing.
The lady came in the room assuming something. Instead of spending 15 minutes to educate herself about a patient an his disease. Like I told her this is the same treatment we get from all of them. An she was doing it… again until I started talking, then she sit for 2 hrs an every 10 minutes she would look at her watch. You can see it in her face that she wasn't happy. If she knew about the disease or even cared, she would have noticed the side effects from the medicine.
This place is so good it helped me out with a lot of problems and the staff there is very good they are nice and very much respectful
I take my mom to this so called mental health clinic well last month my mom doctor called and yelled at my mom like she was a dog because there was a family emergency my mom been having seizures and was put into the… hospital once for them taking a medication away that has always stopped them well first she had 5 to 6 seizures just this week she so week and yes we all r worried but this doctor is going to be reported she should at least called her last detox medicine she wss tsking 1 pill a day her last 1/2 a pill a day should be her last month of detox medicine but this doctor pretty much said we can control and not call any medications in but we r reporting this so called doctor because they cause the seizures in the first and now act like it a big deal just to give her the last month of medication i mean she made the seizures worse because she got mad and took her from 2 a day to 1 an the doctor herself she we will go to 1 n half after 2 but she got mad an just did what mad the doctor happy doctor A.u r doing a bad job i hope u r not staying in mental health
