They treated me more like a drug seeker than a patient despite my history of severe anxiety and PTSD. The nurses are the only redeeming quality of this place. No seriously, you people need an investigation opened on… this place.

We gave multiple providers at this office a go, and it is clear the issue is not a single provider. They don't listen. Even simple sentences about what I do for a living get spun around. We've been "welcomed" to the… practice multiple times, despite being there for months. The providers do not pay attention to patients, do not appropriately return messages or calls about urgent issues, and do not pay attention to what medications the patient has already tried. I expect better from Penn State Health. We're transferring care elsewhere.

yea this place is just plainly bad and probably negligent the majority of the time. i know two patients who tried this place as it’s easy to get into (because its residents) and they ended up passing. the resident says… it happens all the time. okayyy sure, that’s totally normal? not in any legit practice i’ve been to

I’ve been a patient at Penn State Psych for the last 9 years. Since covid, I’ve had nothing but issues with my appointments, medication, and providers. Penn State is a teaching hospital/company and while I can respect… that I don’t like having my provider changed every couple of months. There has always been a problem with refilling medication and waiting to be seen in the lobby anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes past your appointment time. This last time, my appointment had been rescheduled 3 times. When my appointment was cancelled for the last time, I was met with condescension and attitude and not being able to take responsibility for her staffs actions AND mistakes. How can it be that the manager had “no idea” this was happening until I called her. Your the manager. I feel like my time with Penn State has been a waste of time, money, energy and resources. If you prefer a psychiatric office that prioritizes shoving pills in your face rather than getting to the root of the problem this is the place for you

Great facility. Glad we found it. My adult son has tourette's and autism. And the doctor is very much in tune with his needs and our hopes.

This is my first time with Penn State Hershey psychiatry, and I had a very poor experience here. Only had to switch here because I lost my IOP psychiatry due to insurance, but will be looking elsewhere. Was not a fan of… the provider I had, didn’t feel that she really understood me and my conditions, and every visit I saw a new attending, which became very frustrating. In my time here, not much progress was made, and just felt very frustrated each time I visited. Also had an awful time getting a referral from here to a new place, called and left many voice mails and never got a call back. When I finally reached someone after weeks, I was told the provider had a referral and just never sent it out, poor communication, and lots of wasted time here. Definitely should’ve listened to the reviews for a place under 3 starts.

The doctors went months without properly addressing concerns and now they decide to address it, which means just starting out on a 10 month wait list. Should have already been on that wait list months ago but instead of… addressing concerns I was told to spank my child. The office also sent paperwork for a deceased parent to fill out because no one bothered to look at the file.

The best of the best so far

You will struggle to get your calls returned, you will struggle to get your prescriptions refilled in a timely manner, and you will struggle to see the same therapist consistently because it is a teaching school. You… will feel like you are in a meat market, and the fact that no one will call me back to reschedule an appointment that YOU cancelled is ridiculous. I'm tired of calling two or three times before someone calls me back. Wish I had the opportunity or ability to change but I don't.

Everyone in the clinic who is supposed to protect my mental health and support me is very nice and attentive :) However, the staff who handle phone calls often lack respect, and they are quick to dismiss you and hang… up, which is incredibly disappointing for a mental health facility. There have been times when I’ve gotten off the phone feeling worse about myself, or even feeling like I’m being annoying for asking about things I know I need to check in on—things that they are there to help with. I have to remind myself that these individuals are not the ones with degrees in how to treat people. It’s not my fault if someone doesn’t like their job, but working in a mental health facility requires a certain level of care and compassion. If that’s too much to handle, maybe consider a different line of work. Whether you're the therapist, psychiatrist, or a member of the support staff, this is a place where your words, actions, body language, and attitude all matter. Treat people the way you’d want to be treated. I just had an experience that literally felt like getting the door slammed in my face over the phone. The interaction was passive-aggressive, and I was suddenly hung up on without being asked if I needed anything else, after a curt exchange. I was very polite—I even turned to my friend and asked, ‘Was I rude or something?

I miss Carly S. She helped me save my life. I was there for years. I didn’t like medicine residents. After long push to find the right one they always graduated thereafter. I was then placed with another resident and… same things go on and on. You’re trying to create stability but with changes comes major Anxeity. Carly was DBT and that is what changed me more than medicine. She’s a huge loss to this location

They Helped me when I needed it most in life. Wouldn't be where I am without their help. Eternally Greatful.

They work well with my kids and I even got a personal call to adjust my kids meds before they closed. The people at the front desk are nice and patient.

Did we have to wait for our appt - yes. Was it quality - YES! People who complain about long waits or not filing an RX from a previous provider are really the ones dragging down the reviews. I am here to tell you that a… long wait for an appt is EVERYWHERE. When you do NOT have a wait, it is usually less than average care, filing an RX without an appt would be alarming! Wait for your appt. PSH Psychiatry has been great for us so far!

Update: new office staff, no issues with my appointments now. New doctor is great too.

The worse place ever. They won’t get us a referral after evaluation. The child and adolescent clinic is the worst. They never pick your calls neither do they call back after you leave them a voicemail. I’m very unhappy… with this facility

I loved my Doctor here. I have been with him for two years. In the past year I have had such issues. First, I was having RX filled when needed checking in via patient portal with him monthly to every other month. I call… in one day to have my RX refilled and was told that I had to go back through intake...6 month wait.. Because I had not seen him in a year. I was not aware that our check ins were not good enough to qualify or that I needed to be seen. (Maybe I should have known, but I am the patient....its their job to serve me and care for me as it is my job at work to serve my members)...I was told I would be out of medication until then....SIX months without a medication to help with the lows. My doctor stepped in and corrected the issue, with reluctance from the office staff. He knew there was error, and not on my part. Recently I was prescribed a medication as I began to experience issues / changes with my emotional state. He prescribed a medication that I believe MESSED me up big time...not his fault, medication reacts differently for each patient. I told him and he dropped dose. A week in I am a MESS. I am not myself at all. I was pulled off my original medication to start this one. I reach out to get an appt and reach out to him via portal...to be told they could not get me in earlier than Mid Feb and the doctor told me to "hang in there until then" after expression that my demenor has completely changed with this medication. What am I to do ? Go off this for two weeks ? Stay on it? Go back on old one? ALL could have serious repercussions. I am stuck in limbo until then. When a patient ends up in a critical state due to the system here it will be blood on this medical facilities hands.

As someone who has been a patient of psychiatry and behavioral health for years before managing conditions like anxiety and depression, I could not be more disappointed with the providers who I was forced to see as a… condition for me continue on in a grad program. A psychiatrist who touted her vast experience working in psychiatry for decades endangered my life, providing hazardously contraindicated medications leading to substantially worsened mental health and illness-related experiences that no other mental health provider ever before even remotely got close to doing. Even more, she discussed personal affairs and relationships in our appointments as if she were the patient when I clearly was struggling with school and needed mental health support, not hours of my life wasted on a almost weekly basis, costing me hundreds of dollars. She discussed ex relationships with someone seemingly relating to my lived experience which made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Although I shared everything going on openly and fully, she did not actively listen nor attempt to understand me, refusing to provide me with proper medical care which directly, unambiguously worsened my health, pushing me out of a small grad program where I was discriminated against. After neglecting medical care and withholding life-preserving and sustaining medical care from me, and upon my return from a facility that I never should have had to go, her main concern seemed to be verifying that she was not the cause of me needing additional support which was very frustrating to say the least. I have since escaped her negligent and harmful medical care, after leaving the program and not being able to restart at main campus due to being further discriminated against, finally receiving proper mental healthcare once again. I would definitely not recommend any student go to this office for mental healthcare. And perhaps this office is not a good place for anyone to go based on the other negative reviews. There are definitely much better mental health resources out there. In fact, it almost seemed like at least two providers -- including one counselor and this psychiatrist I am referring to -- were inherently committed to not only neglecting proper medical care but also further harming me with their actions and directly contraindicated medications I was being forced to take, aligned with discrimination I was forced to experience in order to proceed forward in that program. The blatantly negligent and poor medical care from this office is shocking given how many decades they have been around. It almost seems like there are multiple individuals in power at this facility/clinic who are committed to perpetuating their biases and prejudices against certain patients (or all patients, which I am not sure about) discriminating against them and us for unknown reasons. Please go elsewhere if you are seeking needed mental healthcare.

I've been a patient here for years. I have a note from a previous therapist that I both have and need an Emotional Support Animal. I miss this therapist. This month, I moved and the new place gave me a 3 line form for… my therapist to fill out. Every provider here refuses to fill it out. I feel as though they're calling me a liar because despite how I've spoken with my therapist about how my cat helps me, they can't verify that's true. They can take my word about if my meds work, but not if my cat does. The blatant, cold disregard I was treated with when I told them that my cat is a necessity for me to continue living was shocking. They even told me to use one of those online services to get her certified. Don't ever do that since they're all scams. ESAs do not get certified, there is no program to get them certified and there's no national database they go into. My therapist, despite me informing her I'd like to do trauma therapy (which is more intense and should have appointments fairly close together) has never started it with me and when I first requested it, actually started pushing my appointments further out. The staff here genuinely doesn't not seem to care if their lack of compassion pushes you over the edge. They don't listen and they don't care. Please seek help elsewhere, really. I'm done. This whole fiasco has sent me into a crisis. Don't go here if you want actual support.

I had a loved one who is admitted here on a psychiatric admission I can’t say anything bad about this place at all every staff member I talk to you on the phone irregardless of why I was calling was very respectful… attentive and caring. It made me feel very comfortable and I’ll save you feel like my love one was in safe hands.

My psychiatrist at this facility along with my therapist at another Penn State office have saved my life. Literally. Happy to be a patient with such dedicated and caring professionals.

i have never had a psychiatrist before so this establishment was home to my first experience. with that being said, i have been quite dissatisfied so far. to start, i had my first appointment with an intern doctor who… didn’t let me finish my sentences. the following appointment, i was just randomly switched to a completely different intern doctor who seemed to have not read any of my file because he made me reiterate my entire traumatizing history as to what brought me in to see them in the first place. over the next few visits, he continued to tell me how i was feeling rather than listening to how i was feeling. he became very stuck on ONE thing i said and continued to try to attribute everything else i said to this diagnosis that my therapist of 3.5 years and myself did not think i had. then after finally getting testing done for adhd, he waited over a week to send in the prescription (though the others were ready in the pharmacy before i even left the appointment) AND sent it to the WRONG pharmacy. when being transferred to make another appointment i was sent to a messaging system. fast forward to today (11.01.21) i ran out of my meds last thursday & called the pharmacy to get a refill. they told me that they had to fax for another refill because i didn’t have any more. today is now monday, i’ve gone 3 (almost 4) days without my medication and my psychiatrist still hasn’t answered the fax. the customer service & overall care here just seems to be lazy. i understand that we are in a mental health overload right now in our world, but it is really difficult for people to start getting the help they need with their mental health & its facilities like this that make them want to give up.

Totally on board with this place until I got my new doctor "assigned" to me. I tried to give the guy a chance but he has terrible communication skills and seems to scare very easily. He is quick with the DSM-5 and the… prescription pad too. He is also very quick to "mandatorily report" when it is not at all necessary and I think if he asked any appropriate questions ever he would know that but that goes back to the poor communication skills. When I brought my concerns forward with patient relations he simply apologized for me misunderstanding him and gave no better explanation. He truly will hurt more patients then he will help if he keeps that nonsense up. Noone needs an overeactive psychiatrist that they can't trust with their problems. Go examine a prostate or something.
