What is MyCare Ohio?

MyCare Ohio is the Ohio Department of Medicaid's managed care program for adults who have both Medicare and Medicaid. Since January 1, 2026, under Next Generation MyCare, four private plans (Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Buckeye Health Plan, CareSource and Molina HealthCare of Ohio) cover Medicare and Medicaid benefits together.

Members who hold both benefits in one plan get a single ID card and one care coordinator, covering behavioral health and substance use treatment as well as medical care.

Does MyCare Ohio cover rehab?

Yes. Every Next Generation MyCare plan covers behavioral health and substance use treatment alongside medical and long-term care benefits. Anthem and CareSource both list outpatient care, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential treatment, withdrawal management, medication-assisted treatment, opioid treatment program services, case management and peer recovery support.

Ohio Medicaid pays for substance use treatment by ASAM level of care, from Level 1 outpatient through Level 3 residential and withdrawal management.

Does MyCare Ohio cover detox?

Yes, withdrawal management is a covered benefit. Anthem MyCare and CareSource MyCare Ohio both list it among substance use services, and Ohio Medicaid pays for ASAM Level 2 withdrawal management in intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization settings and Level 3 withdrawal management in residential or inpatient settings.

Medically managed detox in a hospital falls under the plan's inpatient rules, and CareSource MyCare Ohio requires prior authorization for all inpatient stays in 2026.

Does MyCare Ohio cover residential rehab?

Yes. Residential substance use treatment at ASAM Level 3 is covered. Under Ohio Medicaid rules the first and second admissions in a calendar year need no prior authorization for up to 30 consecutive days; stays past 30 days need authorization, and a third admission needs it from day one.

CareSource MyCare Ohio applies that same rule in 2026. Medication-assisted treatment and psychiatry from outside practitioners can be paid separately during a residential stay.

Does MyCare Ohio need prior authorization for rehab?

Yes, for some levels of care. CareSource MyCare Ohio requires prior authorization for all inpatient stays, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and opioid treatment program services in 2026. Anthem MyCare says certain behavioral health treatments need authorization first, and emergency care never does.

Yes. Intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization are listed as covered substance use services by Anthem MyCare and CareSource MyCare Ohio, and Ohio Medicaid pays for both as ASAM Level 2 care. CareSource requires prior authorization for intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization in 2026.

It is the Ohio Department of Medicaid’s managed care program for adults who hold both Medicaid and Medicare, delivered through private health plans that cover both sets of benefits under one roof. For anyone trying to get into addiction treatment, that means the plan on the card, not the state agency, decides network status, authorization and continued stay.

The program changed shape on January 1, 2026. Under Next Generation MyCare, the Ohio Department of Medicaid moved to a Fully Integrated Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan model and selected four plans: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Buckeye Health Plan, CareSource and Molina HealthCare of Ohio. Coordination-only dual plans are no longer permitted in the state, and the rollout finished on August 1, 2026, so Ohio Medicaid now runs MyCare in all 88 counties rather than the original 29.

Does MyCare Ohio Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. When a member holds both Medicare and Medicaid through one Next Generation MyCare plan, that plan covers all benefits, behavioral health and long-term care included. Anthem MyCare lists alcohol and drug treatment covering intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential treatment and withdrawal management, along with medication-assisted treatment, opioid treatment program services, case management and peer recovery support.

CareSource MyCare Ohio lists the same spread of substance use services. Molina Complete Care for MyCare Ohio names behavioral health as a covered benefit and includes providers offering medication-assisted treatment and other substance use services in its network. Underneath all four plans sits the Ohio Medicaid substance use benefit, which pays for treatment matched to ASAM criteria rather than to a fixed menu.

Which MyCare are you in? Members with both benefits in one plan carry a single ID card and have one care coordinator. Medicaid-only MyCare members keep separate Medicare coverage, may carry up to three cards, and get their Part D drugs from the other plan. The answer changes who authorizes what, so check the card before the first phone call.

What Does MyCare Ohio Pay For at Each Level of Care?

Ohio Medicaid pays for substance use treatment across three bands: Level 1 outpatient, Level 2 intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization including Level 2 withdrawal management, and Level 3 residential and inpatient care including Level 3 withdrawal management. Medication-assisted treatment and psychiatry delivered by outside practitioners can be paid separately while a residential stay is running.

Medical Detox

Withdrawal management is covered at both the intensive outpatient and the residential band, and Anthem and CareSource name it directly on their MyCare benefit lists. Where withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines is already underway, an emergency department is the right destination and emergency care needs no prior approval. Planned admissions to medical detox are arranged by the admitting clinical team with the plan.

Residential and Inpatient

Residential substance use treatment at ASAM Level 3 is covered. Under the Ohio Medicaid rule, a first and second admission in a calendar year carry no prior authorization requirement for up to 30 consecutive days; a stay running beyond 30 days needs authorization, and a third or later admission needs it from day one. Residential rehab under CareSource MyCare follows that structure, while all inpatient stays require authorization.

PHP, IOP and Outpatient

Partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient are covered benefits and are the usual step down after a residential stay. Outpatient counseling, psychological testing, crisis intervention, psychiatric care and medication management, community psychiatric supportive treatment and adult assertive community treatment all appear on Anthem’s MyCare mental health list. No therapy visit limits appeared on the plans’ published pages, so ask your plan whether any apply to your benefit.

Does MyCare Ohio Need Prior Authorization for Rehab?

It depends on the level of care and on the plan. CareSource MyCare Ohio requires prior authorization in 2026 for all inpatient stays, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and opioid treatment program services, with residential substance use care authorized after 30 days on the first two admissions and from the start on a third. Emergency care needs none.

Anthem MyCare states that some behavioral health treatments need approval before care starts and directs members to their treating clinician for specifics. Molina routes authorization requests through the Availity Essentials portal, with services needing approval flagged in the benefits chart of its evidence of coverage. Anthem and Buckeye have not published a substance use authorization list, so a member on either plan should ask the admissions team to put the request in writing and keep the reference number.

Do I Need a Referral for Rehab With MyCare Ohio?

No, not from a primary care physician on the two plans that publish a rule. Because the member share is usually zero, the authorization step and the network contract matter far more than the sticker price. A stay at a program with no contract, taken after the transition window has closed, is where an unexpected bill comes from.

Does MyCare Ohio Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medication?

Yes. Anthem and CareSource both list medication-assisted treatment and opioid treatment program services as covered MyCare benefits, and CareSource requires prior authorization for opioid treatment program services in 2026. Molina’s network includes behavioral health providers offering medication-assisted treatment. Methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed through a licensed opioid treatment program rather than a retail pharmacy.

Where the Prescription Is Filled

Molina uses CVS Caremark as its pharmacy benefit manager for Next Generation MyCare, and its formulary lists methadone tablets and solution as opioid analgesics on tier 3 with authorization and quantity limits, which is a separate listing from the dose given at a methadone clinic. Formulary placement for buprenorphine-naloxone and injectable naltrexone was not published on the pages reviewed, so check the specific product on your plan’s drug list before discharge.

Dual-Benefit and Medicaid-Only Members

A member with both benefits in one MyCare plan receives prescription and over-the-counter drugs from that plan. A Medicaid-only MyCare member receives Part D drugs from a separate Medicare plan, and the MyCare plan pays only for non-Part D items such as over-the-counter products and prescription vitamins.
