Sober Living Homes in Idaho

Sober living homes in Idaho are shared houses where people in recovery live without alcohol or drugs, pay rent and follow house rules. Idaho has no state certification or registry for these homes, so the questions you ask before moving in matter more here than in many states.

RehabSeekers.com builds its listings from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves. Recovery housing is listed in towns and rural areas, from Caldwell and Garden City in the Treasure Valley to Burley and Minidoka in the Magic Valley.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Idaho cities have sober living homes?

Caldwell, Minidoka, Burley and Garden City are where sober living homes in Idaho tend to cluster, so a housing search often begins in one of those communities.

Boise and Burley are the larger cities closest to these homes, which can matter for commuting to outpatient appointments, work or court dates while living in a sober home. Public transit and parking are worth checking for anyone without a car.

Can I use Idaho Medicaid for sober living?

Magellan of Idaho manages the Idaho Behavioral Health Plan, which covers substance use disorder services for Idaho Medicaid members, and nearly all of the sober living homes in Idaho record accepting Idaho Medicaid as payment.

Asking whether Idaho Medicaid pays toward rent or only toward treatment services connected to a home is a sensible first question. Members with Medicare as well may be enrolled with Molina Healthcare of Idaho or UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Idaho.

Which sober living homes in Idaho are near hot springs?

Mitchell Butte Hot Spring, Warm Spring and Roystone Hot Springs are the springs named most frequently near sober living homes in Idaho. Most of the sober living homes in Idaho sit within 25 miles of a hot spring, with a median of about 24.3 miles from each home to the nearest one.

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home is a residence, not a treatment program: residents share a house that bans alcohol and drugs, and the rent does not include clinical care. Residential rehab in Idaho, by contrast, is treatment, with clinical staff, assessments and a care plan.

Many sober home residents attend outpatient care or an intensive outpatient program during the day, so the house supplies a stable, substance-free base while clinical treatment happens somewhere else. A correctional halfway house is different again: the justice system runs it, or contracts it out, for people leaving custody.

Idaho has no state agency that certifies or registers these homes, so the checking falls to you. Ask the operator what standards apply, whether anyone inspects the house, and whether the written policies can be read before signing anything.

Residents usually pay rent themselves, weekly or monthly. Some recovery support funding in Idaho, reached through Magellan of Idaho at 1-855-202-0973, lists housing among the supports it can pay for, but nobody should assume Medicaid or a private plan will cover rent without asking first.

Are sober living homes in Idaho certified or regulated?

No state body in Idaho certifies or registers sober living homes. The National Alliance for Recovery Residences, which sets national standards through state affiliates, lists no Idaho affiliate.

The Division of Behavioral Health, part of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, does list a document called Safe and Sober Recovery Residencies among its standards. Idaho has no official list where you can look up a home’s status, so ask the operator:

  • which standards the house follows
  • who inspects it, if anyone
  • whether written policies are available to read before you sign

Levels of support you may hear about

Many operators describe their homes using four levels of support from national recovery residence standards. The level tells you how much staffing to expect.

LevelWhat it usually means
I, peer-runResidents run the house together; no paid staff on site
II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident oversees rules and testing
III, supervisedPaid staff and set daily structure; clinical care is arranged elsewhere
IV, service providerHousing linked to a treatment provider, with clinical staff involved

How much does sober living cost in Idaho, and who pays?

Residents usually pay rent themselves, weekly or monthly.

Idaho’s SUD Services Program, run by the Division of Behavioral Health and delivered through Magellan of Idaho, lists housing among the recovery supports it funds. The state’s opioid response grant also pays for recovery support through the same network. To ask whether you qualify, call Magellan of Idaho at 1-855-202-0973. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare gives that number to people on Medicaid and to people without insurance. You can also read about state-funded options in Idaho.

Idaho expanded Medicaid in January 2020, and Magellan of Idaho manages behavioral health services for members. Don’t assume that Medicaid or a private plan will pay rent; ask your plan directly. If you are in an Idaho drug court, ask the court coordinator about housing expectations and any help on offer. You can also look at court-ordered programs.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Ask for the house rules in writing, read them before you pay anything, and ask:

  • How often are drug tests done, and how?
  • What are the curfew and guest rules?
  • How long do residents usually stay?
  • Is rent refunded if you leave or are asked to leave?
  • How much notice comes with a discharge?

Also ask what happens after a return to use. Some houses ask residents to leave the same day, while others allow a plan to go back to treatment. Leaving with nowhere safe to go raises risk, so ask whether staff help arrange a bed, a treatment referral or a ride.

Can you live in a sober home while taking medication for opioid use disorder?

Some Idaho homes accept residents who take buprenorphine or methadone, and some don’t. Ask the operator directly.

If you get medication from a Suboxone clinic or one of the methadone clinics in Idaho, check how far the house is from the clinic.

Naloxone and safety in the home

Tolerance drops after time without opioids, so using again after a period in recovery carries a higher overdose risk. Ask whether the house keeps naloxone where residents can reach it, and whether residents know how to use it.

Idaho pharmacies have sold naloxone without a prescription since 2019, and it is free with Medicaid. Idaho Code 37-2739C also offers some protection from possession charges for people who seek medical help during a drug-related overdose.

How do you find a sober living home in Idaho on these listings?

Start with the Idaho listings. You can filter by gender, medication policy, populations served, location and languages. Separate pages cover men’s programs and women’s programs, and the national sober living page explains recovery housing more broadly.

Idaho’s sober living listings are split evenly between towns and rural areas. About three in four sit within 25 miles of a river, such as the Owyhee River, the Raft River or Currant Creek. The same share lie within 25 miles of a hot spring, at a median distance of 24.3 miles. Half are closest to Boise Air Terminal or Magic Valley Regional Airport in Twin Falls, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 28.7 miles.

If a landlord, neighbor or city objects to a recovery house, residents may have housing protections. A legal aid office or a fair housing group can explain your options.
